Apologies up front for the overload of numbers, let me know if there's a preference to lose any of them. I've added the new second column showing last week's chart postions, 3rd one is now highest position, 4th weeks on chart, last figures are "sales" so far in my points system. Coldplay and Rihanna have just overtaken Billie Jean in the all-time "sales" after exactly one year on my chart, only 60's and 70's classics are above it now.

Stats: Keane finally get a Number One after many close calls over 8 years, and only just keep off the rocketing exciting Woodkid minor hit (deserves to be big). I've been downloading a lot this week... Meanwhile lots of 80's acts with new stuff, Kylie shoots up to the Top 10 for the umpteenth time in 24 years. Pet Shop Boys for the treble umpteenth time in 27 years:)

Oldie John Denver (who taught everyone that flying your own private jet is a bad idea) returns to the Top 20 for the first time in 38 years thanks to the power of adverts. I always liked it but I was sweet 16 and too cool (hah! as if!) for it to make my Top 10. Maybe now it will:)

Highest new entry Pnau (having had Elton John-related hits, plus some as Empire Of The Sun), just ahead of Bananarama's cover of Maroon 5, who rocket up to 16 with their new one, 3 goodies in a row from them, who'd-a thought it!

T.Rex return with a new unreleased track now a proper single. I say new, it's a more laid-back early version of the mighty Jeepster. Marc Bolan was a teen hero of mine (but who taught everyone not to buy small cars. I've visited the offending tree)

And the original chart battling bands, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles both enter the chart to keep on the battle after 50 years, The Stones with first new material in a few years, it's actually got a decent riff for the first time in a while. The Beatles enter thanks to the Magical Mystery Tour re-promotion entering the album chart - this is one of the few tracks not to have made my charts, it's sweet. I Owned the EP back in 1972 but I didnt let random oldies in my charts back then, so it's overdue!

cheers!

Hi John!

Nice to see Kylie making a big jump into Top10! Not that i'm a Kylie's fan, but Flower is a nice track, her best in ages...

I'm in the mood for seeing 007 this weekend (even though my wife is going to take me to Hotel Transylvania). I love Bond's film series. Irrelatively of music. But this time, i also want to sense how Adel's song will be sounding through the big dynamics and with surround sound. A lovely theme, which has got the Bond's 60s retro feeling.

Glad to see The Rolling Stones among the new entries. Hope Number 60 is not the highest place they'll reach.

Thanks Andrey, Flower is a lovely version, its a shame its not going to be a hit...

I'm looking forward to Skyfall but will wait till its less busy, Adele's theme is one of the best Bond's. I saw Hotel Transylvania last night, great for little kids, perhaps a little manic at times for big (old) kids like me, but its charming enough and fun to try and recognise a few of the famous voices before the end credits. I only recognised the pop star oddly enough!:)

Rolling Stones will def go up, heard it again and the riffs are fab, even if the lyrics not their best ever, it may even be their best single since 1983...

This is exactly what my wife likes. :D She loves Ice Age and Madagascar and when she saw Transylvania's trailer on TV she said we can't miss one :D I don't mind.

Nice stuff indeed. First of all I was surprised by the production. These old chaps sound pretty energetically and fresh. Not the thing i've expected from them after Bridges to Babylon and A Bigger Bang.

Best single since 1983...? Well, maybe. But doesn't Harlem Shuffle count? I also loved Mixed Emotions when it first came out in 1989.

Must agree with Andrey, "Flower" is the very nice song.

"Better The Devil You Know" is the one from some songs, which could be my # 1 twice (another version is Steps), also "The Land Of Make Believe" was # 1 with Bucks Fizz (in 1982) and AllSTARS* (in 2002)

Sad, that most singles in last 10 years from 2 huge female 80s superstars Madonna and Kylie Minogue are bad.

I like only "Your Disco Needs You" and "Flower" (for Kylie), "Love Profussion" and "American Pie" (for Madonna).

John, sad that Steps (maybe my favourite all-time # 1 group) is only # 59 here, you are not their fan.

Is it a peak for Taylor Swift in your chart ? Where was "Love Story" ?

I enjoyed Mixed Emotions, though I havent heard it for over 20 years (maybe I'll buy Grrr which has everything on it), Harlem Shuffle was OK but I tend to prefer original versions of songs and the Bob & Earl version is superb (nicked by House of Pain for Jump Around)

I'm sure your wife will enjoy Hotel T, it's sweet:)

cheers!

Hi Alex,

thankls for that:) Better The Devil You Know was the song that made me change my mind about Kylie, but it only peaked at 4 or 5 (and should have been a No. 1!). The Land Of make Believe was a Number One in My chart (Bucks Fizz had 5 of 'em!), the covers I didn't like as much as the originals. I still love Kylie & Madonna (though Ive yet to buy Madonna's last album after the disappointing singles), but I never really was a fan of Steps, they had some Top 10's with Last Thing On My Mind and a couple of others, but they usually have to work hard to convince me. The new Steps song went straight in my chart (which means I like it) after only one listen, something they havent done for a looong time, I hope it's a hit. I really enjoyed Claire on the TV show "Pop Star To Opera Star" where she showed she could sing well and was a lovely person! It may well go higher when I hear it again:)

Yes that's Taylor Swift's biggest hit by far, Love Story made my Top 40 but I dont think it got far into the 20 if at all. That still means I like it though (Top 75 = like, Top 60 = like quite a bit, Top 40 = like a lot, Top 20 = great stuff, Top 10 = fab stuff, Top 5= wonderful/classic stuff:)

cheers!

john

Hmmm, very interesting qualification, John! I think my love for the record ranks as follows: Top50=it has something that touches me, Top30=like quite a bit, Top20=like a lot, Top10=great stuff, No.2= fab stuff, No.1=classic!

Thanks Andrey, interesting stuff, too. I think your rating is probably about the norm for music enthusiasts, I've always been a bit freakishly obsessive about music from age 6 onwards (or as I like to see it, endlessly enthusiastic about music old and new:) Ive never understood why friends tended to stop being enthusiastic about new music when they hit 30/35, but they often do and I see the same process happening with some current 30-year-olds (buzzjack apart of course)...!

cheers!

john

I see what you mean, John. There are lot of my peers next to me which stopped listening to new music at the age of 30/35. I'm glad i still have interest for some new stuff. I'm not into all music that out today. I don't like most of Radio 1 Top40 fillers. I find them boring all the way. But still there are plenty of good music on 6Music and NME. Every week i'm puzzled over dilemma how to place 15-20 terrific records in my Top10, 10 glorious stuff into Top 5 and 3 killer tracks on the top spot. I think i wouldn't even faced such a problem had i compiled my Charts back in the 80's, when i was a teen.

Music is still able to surprise me. Not the albums anymore (no one is makin' new Ziggy Stardust and The Dark Side Of The Moon nowadays), but singles surely do.

I agree with most of what you say Andrey, thanks, and also Radio One needs a slap. They are so obsessively focused on making the playlist appeal to 12-year-olds (trying to force anyone over 30 to switch over to Radio 2, which admittedly has a much more varied and interesting playlist) that they are often willing to play any old nondescript "current-sounding" release rather than play something well-made and exciting/interesting that happens to be made by someone who's pushing 40 or 50. There was a time, not long ago, when Radio One was perfectly happy to play current pop dance sounds by women approaching middle age (that'll be Cher) as long as it was good. I know when I was 12 I might have preferred younger pop stars, but that didnt mean I automatically hated records by anyone over 30. I didn't. I judged the record only by how good it was or wasn't. I have yet to hear Radio One playlist exciting stuff like Woodkid, hardly old popstars, either..:)
