September 18, 201311 yr  I just discovered them for the first time earlier this summer...heard the song "Scary Kisses" from their 1996 album and loved it instantly. Finally listening to another song of theirs, YAY. Voice Of The Beehive were well-regarded at the time, but seem to have slipped from memory very sadly. They were great, a sort of 60's poprock harmony-styled retro band with an 80's punk-indie attitude. Monsters And Angels is my fave of theirs, try that one B-)

October 8, 201311 yr Author 14.01.1989 : Will To Power - Baby I Love Your Way (2 weeks # 1) http://www.tookworks.com/MiamiMusic1988/images/will2pwr.jpg 79r_XaUU7yE Will to Power is the name of an American dance-pop and Freestyle music group that originated in south Florida in the mid-1980s. Bob Rosenberg attended a Winter Music Seminar in Ft. Lauderdale where he met singer-songwriter Suzi Carr, who had co-written two songs on Miami Sound Machine's 1985 breakthrough album, Primitive Love. After Rosenberg mentioned that he was looking for a vocalist, he and Carr provided vocals for a song he had written, "Dreamin'" (which would later appear on Will to Power's debut album), with Rosenberg on lead vocals and Carr on backing vocals. Rosenberg wrote "Dreamin'" as a tribute to his sister, Robin, after she had died. In June 1988, Will to Power released a follow-up single, "Say It's Gonna Rain", which featured Carr on lead vocals. This song reached No. 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in July 1988. Their main hit "Baby I Love Your Way" combines elements of two previously recorded rock songs: "Baby, I Love Your Way", a #12 Billboard Hot 100 hit from 1976 by the British-born singer Peter Frampton; and American Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd's song "Free Bird", which hit #19 on the Hot 100 chart in 1975. Will to Power's medley of these two songs had more of a synthesized dance beat (as opposed to the rock ballad-like nature of the two original songs). It rose to #1 on the Hot 100 chart on December 3, 1988 (the last medley to do so on that chart) remaining there for one week. It also peaked at #2 on the Billboard adult contemporary chart. Additionally, in the "Freebird" section, the line "and the bird you cannot change" in the original version was changed to "and this bird will never change". It also became the group's highest-charting hit in the UK, reaching No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart.

It was the first solo single released by British singer Dusty Springfield under her long-time producer Johnny Franz. Recorded by Dusty Springfield while she was still a member of The Springfields, the song was released in November 1963, three weeks after The Springfields' final concert. It was a popular success, reaching #4 UK, #12 US, #6 Australia, and #21 Canada. In the US, Dusty Springfield was the second artist of the British Invasion, after the Beatles, to have a hit, entering the Billboard chart at #77 in the last week of January 1964 (Beatles having "She Loves You" at #69 and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" at #3). In 1988, Fox covered the song as "I Only Wanna Be With You" for her album "I Wanna Have Some Fun". It was released as the second single in United States and Europe from her third studio album I Wanna Have Some Fun (1988). The song was another hit for Fox, reaching number 16 in United Kingdom and number 9 in Ireland. The music video does not have a plot, but scenes include Fox hunting through trash cans, dancing, fireworks, and the singer in bed with her bespectacled lover. Formed in Birmingham in 1985, the all-female quartet originally consisted of Vix (Vickie Perks), Magz (Maggie Dunne), Jo Dunne and Tina O'Neill. The band's name was shortened to Fuzzbox for the U.S. release of their first album. Their first release, in March 1986, was a single of "XX Sex" and "Rules And Regulations", with the fuzzbox featuring prominently, which reached No. 41 in the UK charts. This proved a huge success for the girls; despite not reaching the Top 40, the Vindaloo Records release remained in the Indie chart for twenty-five weeks. The band signed to WEA and for their next album, Big Bang! (1989), they made an abrupt change and reinvented themselves as a slick dance-pop vocal group, with Vickie Perks being cast centre stage as a sex symbol. The songs "Pink Sunshine", "Fast Forward Futurama" and "International Rescue" were all co-written by Liam Sternberg. The first three singles from the album, "International Rescue" (UK No. 11), "Pink Sunshine" (UK No. 14) and "Self!" (UK No. 24) all reached the UK Top 30, although a fourth single released from the album, "Walking On Thin Ice", peaked at No. 76.

October 16, 201311 yr Author 25.03.1989 : Madonna - Like A Prayer (3 weeks # 1) http://www.fidicaro.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/madonna-like-a-prayer.jpg 79fzeNUqQbQ "Like a Prayer" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna for her 1989 studio album of the same name. Sire Records released it as the lead single from the album on March 3, 1989. Written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard, "Like a Prayer" denoted a more artistic and personal approach to songwriting for Madonna, who felt she needed to cater more to her adult audience. "Like a Prayer" is a pop rock song with elements of gospel music. A choir provides background vocals that heighten the song's spiritual nature, and a rock guitar keeps the music dark and mysterious. Madonna introduced liturgical words in the lyrics-inspired by her Catholic upbringing-but changed the context in which they were used. They have dual meanings of sexual innuendo and religion. "Like a Prayer" was acclaimed by critics, and was a commercial success. It was Madonna's seventh number-one single on the United States' Billboard Hot 100, and topped the singles charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Sweden, United Kingdom and other countries. In United Kingdom, "Like a Prayer" entered the UK Singles Chart at number two, before moving to the top the next week, remaining there for three weeks. Madonna became the artist with the most number-one singles of the 1980s in the UK, with a total of six chart-toppers. "Like a Prayer" became the tenth best-selling song of 1989 in the UK, with the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) certifying it gold, for shipment of 400,000 copies of the single. According to The Official Charts Company, the song has sold 550,000 copies there. "Like a Prayer" also reached number one in Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. After the Glee episode "The Power of Madonna" was broadcast, "Like a Prayer" again entered the chart at position 47, on May 15, 2010. Edited October 17, 201311 yr by AlexRange

The album was widely praised by critics, and featured collaborations with David Gilmour and Johnny Marr. MacColl's lyrics addressed life in Margaret Thatcher's Britain on "Free World" (# 43 in UK Singles Chart), ridiculed the vapidity of fame in "Fifteen Minutes", and addressed the vagaries of love in "Don't Come The Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim!" Although Kite contained many original compositions, MacColl's biggest chart success from the album was the cover of The Kinks' song "Days", which gave her a UK Top 20 hit in July 1989. A bonus track on the CD version was a cover of the Smiths song "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby".

It was written by Allan Caswell and performed by Lynne Hamilton. Caswell recalls that his 'publisher was having lunch with a guy from Grundy's one Friday and asked what they had coming up. They already had music for Prisoner, but the final decision was being made on the Monday and if we could get something to them by then they'd listen to it. ""I didn't get a chance to work on it until the Sunday afternoon. It was like buying a lottery ticket either I write something and it might get accepted or I don't write something and not give myself a chance". Caswell recorded the song on a portable cassette player 'and gave it to his publisher who delivered it without listening to it. "Within five days, I was in the studio with Lynne Hamilton. She got half way through the song and burst into tears. Anyone who believed in it like that was going to do a good version of it." The song was a hit in Australia in 1979 when the television show was launched, and reached number three in the UK singles charts in 1989 when the show attracted millions of viewers in its late night slot in ITV regions. Their debut album "Treeless Plain" released in November 1983, was a critically acclaimed and brilliant album—described as a "magnificent, muscular piece of work that pounds out simple powerful rock songs – one of the best indie rock albums of its day"—but no singles were released from it. In April 1983, Jill Birt became a member of the alternative rock and pop band, The Triffids, replacing the band's original keyboardist, Margaret Gillard. Birt's vocals were highlighted on the lead single from "The Black Swan" album "Goodbye Little Boy", issued in March 1989, which reached No. 81 on the Australian Singles Chart and # 90 in United Kingdom. The single's cover depicts a close-up of Birt in sunglasses. Allmusic's Wilson Neate discovered her "little-girl voice and an electronic sheen make 'Goodbye Little Boy' one of the band's purest pop statements". In 2008, The Triffids were inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame. Edited October 22, 201311 yr by AlexRange

Musically, it is an uptempo ballad of sorts. The lyrics are bittersweet in typical Davies fashion. The song addresses a former lover who has either left or died. This person is thanked for the days together, and forgiven for the departure. The lyrics reflect on the lasting effect the person has had, and promise "Though you're gone, you're with me every single day, believe me." Although album "Kite" contained many original compositions, MacColl's biggest chart success from the album was the cover of Kinks' song "Days", which gave her a UK Top 20 hit in July 1989. It was released as a single and reached #12 on the UK singles chart, the same position achieved by Kinks in 1968. Edited October 22, 201311 yr by AlexRange

The group appeared on Channel 4's The Chart Show and soon afterward signed with EMI, releasing their debut single "(What's Wrong With) Dreaming?" in mid 1989 (# 70 in United Kingdom). Their album Say Something Good followed a few months later, recorded in Los Angeles and produced by legendary producer Don Gehman. In the summer of 1990, the band scored their biggest hit with a cover of The Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'". This was a double 'a' side with "Carry the Blame" which had been written by Steve Cottier. "This is the World" followed in late 1991, but the group disbanded shortly after.
