Posted August 15, 200618 yr England Team: Paul Robinson Gary Neville Rio Ferdinand John Terry Ashley Cole Steven Gerrard Owen Hargreaves Frank Lampard Stewart Downing Jermain Defoe Peter Crouch Dean Ashton was origninally gonna start up front with Crouchy but he's been ruled out through injury which is a shame as he's a very good player and he had a brilliant chance to stake his claim for a first team place what with Owen injured and Rooney suspended for the first qualifiers. Gerrard is gonna play on the right, with Lampard and Hargreaves in the centre. Why McLaren hasn't dropped Lampard i'll never know. -_- Sure he's done a lot of good for England but he was c**p in the world cup and was c**p for Chelsea on sunday. He's jaded and would benefit greatly from some more rest IMO.
August 15, 200618 yr Yeah Gerrard should be in the centre with Lennon on the right -_- the two can't play together and it was proved that Gerrard was much better in the World Cup, glad to see he's trying out Downing on the left though.
August 15, 200618 yr Author Yeah Gerrard's best position is in the centre of midfield. He scored a lot of goals for Liverpool on the right hand side of midfield but he's a lot better in the centre. -_- I was hoping Lennon would start on the right as well; that way we have two out and out wingers. ^_^
August 15, 200618 yr yeah gerrard plays best in centre, dont know why he doesnt play there all the time! More goals would be scored! Hargreaves :puke2: Edited August 15, 200618 yr by Ryan_P
August 15, 200618 yr Author Yes i thought he shouldnt have been on the pitch at all!! A lot of England fans would have agreed with you at that statement (me included) before the Portugal match, but he was the only real bright spark that England got out of the world cup. He was immense for us againt Portugal and he still warrants a place in the XI IMO as you couldn't drop him after that Portugal match. ^_^ Now Lampard on the other hand, he should be dropped. <_<
August 15, 200618 yr Now Lampard on the other hand, he should be dropped. <_< On the evidence of his Community Shield performance - Captain John Terry should be dropped. The England XI smacks of Mclaren auditioning to replace Ferguson as the next Man Utd manager. If this is a new beginning, then why play Gary Neville at Right-Back, why not try Luke Young out (obviously the superb Steve Finnan was not selected for the squad as he plays for Liverpool)? .. and why persist in playing Frank Lampard AND Steven Gerrard in the same midfield - it does not work (drop fat Frank!) I'm a Liverpool supporter, but even I'm not that partisan, to realise that Steven Gerrard is not the best Right-wing midfielder in the country. Certainly Aaron Lennon is better on the wing then Stevie G & he is certainly not as good as Real Madrid's player of last season who topped the assists table in La Liga last season with 31 assists (in 33 appearances for his club).
August 15, 200618 yr Author No I don't thnk Terry should be dropped. He had a bad game on sunday, mainly becuase he lacks pace and Gallas and Ferdinand both provide a pacy centre back for Chelsea and England. I think Lampard thinks he is un-dropable. Chelsea have a world class team and I don't think he's ever been dropped. which builds up a mini ego. If he has a bad game then he's not bothered really as he knows he won't get dropped. He used and a lot of the players used the excuse of well it was a long season and we were tired. <_< The fact was Lampard especially was extremley poor and he deserves to be dropped. -_-
August 16, 200618 yr Sorry anyone who slags off Owen Hargreaves after the world cup is clearly mentally retarded.. I HATED him before the WC but thought he was our best player by a clear MILE. Oh and is Joe Cole injured?? If not Steve McClaren is a tosser.

Steve Finnan wasn't selected because he plays for Ireland ;) Oh and is Joe Cole injured?? If not Steve McClaren is a tosser. Yes he is ;)

Oh and is Joe Cole injured?? If not Steve McClaren is a tosser. Agreed. Hargreaves was voted England's best player at the world cup by quite some distance, and rightly so! Cole fooked his knee ligament in Chelsea's pre-season. Originally they said he could be out for a while but he should be fit for the qualifiers next month! And Nicky's right - Steve Finnan is Irish. I thought a Liverpool fan would know that!

August 16, 200618 yr This will be fun to watch without Beckham, I love to see this game fall to pieces.
August 16, 200618 yr Well I wish they played like that in the World Cup, if we did, we would have won it Steve McClaren took a gamble and it worked 100% for efficient, considering Greece are European champions, they looked nothing like it, they didn't even qualify for the World Cup
August 16, 200618 yr Author We look a lot better now than we did at the world cup. ^_^ Gerrard is playing like he does for Liverpool in that he is free to roam the pitch. Greece are very poor at the back though, but the players are taking the goals well. ^_^
