November 15, 201212 yr Too bad that Psy will never reach number 1 while he had the biggest selling US single of the past 6 weeks... Just proves how unfair the BB Hot 100 is.... Also the Wanted only got to number 95 while they were in the iTunes top 20 for most of the week which prove that the BB hot 100 is getting more airplay based than sales based: just look at last week when Taylor Swift 'we are never...' had zero digital sales (due to the complete my album deduction) and was still at number 11 in the BB hot 100!!!!
November 15, 201212 yr I wonder when they'll get rid of this airplay+sales chart and make it a sales-only chart like the rest of the world.
November 15, 201212 yr They won't as they mention the chart is not a sales based one but a popularity based one. :( Poor PSY.
November 15, 201212 yr I wonder when they'll get rid of this airplay+sales chart and make it a sales-only chart like the rest of the world. I doubt they'd ever do that just because if people do want a sales chart, there's already the digital songs chart, even if it is just viewed as "secondary" to the Hot 100. #95 isn't amazing but I wasn't holding up much hope, I'm just happy The Wanted have another chart entry. :D Woo at the climbs for Ed, Ellie, Imagine Dragons, Ke$ha and Rihanna. Sales still seem pretty weak, first time in a couple of months that PSY has gone below 200k.
November 15, 201212 yr They won't as they mention the chart is not a sales based one but a popularity based one. :( Poor PSY. Radio policies should NOT define what's popular and what's not... Only consumers should have that right, and what better way to define popularity than actual sales.... that's why the digital chart is the most representative of the public's ttaste.... November 15, 201212 yr We've had this argument a million times. The Hot 100 is not going to become sales-only, get over it. If we're lucky they might reduce the weight of airplay on the chart but that probably won't happen unless sales start to decline.
November 15, 201212 yr Oh that's a slightly unexpected massive-ish climb for Ed, he has been back in the top 30 on iTunes I suppose but was still expecting him to only climb one or two max. Has he had big gains in airplay/streaming this week or something? Woo at Adele climbing back to the top 40 and top 10 on Digital Songs, plus Mumford & Sons, Ellie Goulding and Muse climbing again. Alex Clare still repping the Brits in the top 10 too :P Was semi-expecting 'I Found You' to miss the Hot 100 entirely as it did similarly if not slightly worse on iTunes than 'Sweet Nothing' which got to #96, so quite happy with #95 and a third 'hit' for them. Yay for 'I Cry' cracking the top 10 and 'Ho Hey' re-peaking again (top 10 next week please). 'Diamonds' to finally replace Maroon 5 this week or have M5 still got too much of an advantage in airplay/streaming? 'Clique' and 'Mercy' both holding up well still :D
November 15, 201212 yr Ed had a 5 place climb on airplay, 2 place climb on streaming. I imagine Rihanna will take it next week, she's now #1 on streaming with Maroon 5 slipping and the gap on airplay is getting smaller.
November 16, 201212 yr While I agree that Gangnam Style has been hugely popular, it's hasn't really sold bucketloads. Its best weekly sales are 301k and at that time its airplay numbers were very weak PLUS on that week One More Night was #2 in sales. It really didn't do as well as some other #2 hits that "have been robbed", Payphone for example. Even One Direction's Live While We're Young had a better weekly sales than GS.
November 16, 201212 yr IIRC one of its weeks at #2 was the closest battle for Hot 100 #1 for a fairly long time. So yeah, I'd say it was pretty much robbed. 5 weeks at #1 on Digital Songs without making #1 on the Hot 100 matches the record for that (with Miley Cyrus' 'Party In The U.S.A.') right? Ridiculous that things like this can even happen.

Don't forget that GS have done very well in streaming too but so have other big hits so it's not like the other songs in top 5 haven't been popular. You have to have all three: sales, streaming, airplay to top the Hot 100. GS won't probably even be in top 5 in year-end sales in the US. You can say that it didn't reach #1 because of lack of airplay but in a way you could say that it didn't do it because it didn't sell enough.
November 16, 201212 yr I don't really get the point? You're making it sound like it hasn't sold very well but it reached a million downloads over a month ago so it's surely past the two million mark now and still selling 100k+ a week, seems very good to me. I'm not a fan of it myself but I might say it was robbed given it's performance on digital songs (+ the fact 'One More Night' never topped digital songs iirc? The fact it might not be in the YE top 5 is nothing to be ashamed of as OMN probably won't be either). LWWY had one week where it sold more but it dropped fast after that so
November 16, 201212 yr My point was that it hasn't been that successful in sales to make up the lack of airplay. If it was the best selling single of the year, or even top 3, then it'd be "robbed". Now it's just bad timing because its best sales week were before the peak in airplay. You can say that all #2 songs are "robbed" because they didn't go #1. Edited November 17, 201212 yr by SKOB
November 16, 201212 yr Gangnam Style IS robbed of the #1 spot. It doesn't need to be one of the year's most successful songs and YTD Top 5 and considering it was released 8 months into the year (and didn't explode until the 9th), it's done pretty well tbh.
November 17, 201212 yr My point was that it hasn't been that successful in sales to make up the lack of airplay. If it was the best selling single of the year, or even top 3, then it'd be "robbed". Now it's just bad timing because its best sales week were before the peak in airplay. You can say that all #2 songs are "robbed" because they didn't go #1. it doesn't need to sell zillions more than the number 2 song to deserve a number 1, it sold at least 30% more than Maroon 5 in each of the past 8 weeks Which should've been enough to place it at number 1 for a few weeks... exaggerating the airplay quota is really harming the charts relevance....
November 17, 201212 yr the Wanted should've been in purple... they are fewer and fewer these days... There have been more British artists in the chart in the last 18 months or so than there have been for DECADES...
