November 18, 201212 yr it doesn't need to sell zillions more than the number 2 song to deserve a number 1, it sold at least 30% more than Maroon 5 in each of the past 8 weeks Which should've been enough to place it at number 1 for a few weeks... exaggerating the airplay quota is really harming the charts relevance.... It's probably just the difference in thinking because I have never considered Hot 100 as a sales chart and for me it's natural that a #1 hit there is either successful on every field (One More Night) or sells gigantic numbers (Candle in the Wind '97, for example). It's probably different to you British people because your #1 chart has always been based just on sales and you're not familiar with hit chart (In Finland the official chart is based only on sales as well, but I've followed the US charts for almost two decades now and really love the concept of Hot 100)
