Posted November 23, 201212 yr OK, it’s been a while since I posted a 35-years-ago chart. Me, I was at College, first year Lincoln and enjoying student life and Art in particular, and I remember sitting through hours of Saturday morning kids TV waiting for the promised airing of the Abba video (to the annoyance of housemates). Top Of The Pops 1977 seems to have caught up, so here’s my chart exactly as rated for: November 22nd 1977: 1. (2) THE NAME OF THE GAME - Abba 2. (1) VIRGINIA PLAIN/PYJAMARAMA - Roxy Music 3. (4) TURN TO STONE - E.L.O. 4. (5) CALLING OCCUPANTS OF INTERPLANETARY CRAFT - Carpenters 5. (3) STAR WARS - Meco 6. (13) HOW DEEP IS YOUR LOVE - Bee Gees 7. (7) LOVE HURTS - Nazereth 8. (10) WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS - Queen 9. (14) DANCIN’ PARTY - Showaddywaddy 10. (16) ROCKIN’ ALL OVER THE WORLD - Status Quo 11. (8) YES SIR I CAN BOOGIE - Baccara 12. (6) 2-4-6-8 MOTORWAY - Tom Robinson Band 13. (11) FROM HERE TO ETERNITY - Giorgio 14. (12) BLACK BETTY - Ram Jam 15. (25) GOING PLACES - Jacksons 16. (9) SHE’S NOT THERE - Santana 17. (18) HOLIDAYS IN THE SUN - Sex Pistols 18. (29) DADDY COOL - Darts 19. (17) BLACK IS BLACK - la Belle Epoque 20. (15) NEEDLES AND PINS - Smokie 21. (46) IT’S A HEARTACHE - Bonnie Tyler 22. (26) BELFAST - Boney M 23. (19) HEROES - David Bowie 24. (--) YOU’VE LOST THAT LOVIN’ FEELING - Righteous Brothers 25. (20) YOU’RE IN MY HEART - Rod Stewart 26. (--) MULL OF KINTYRE - Wings 27. (35) GEORGINA BAILEY - Noosha Fox 28. (28) WONDROUS STORIES - Yes 29. (24) WAY DOWN - Elvis Presley 30. (23) MAGIC FLY - Space 31. (30) CAPTAIN KREMMEN - Kenny Everett 32. (32) I BELIEVE YOU - Dorothy Moore 33. (45) I WILL - Ruby Winters 34. (22) MY BABY LEFT ME/ THAT’S ALRIGHT MAMA - Slade 35. (21) LOVE BUG - Tina Charles 36. (27) ANGEL OF THE MORNING - Mary Mason 37. (34) I CAN’T GET YOU OUTA MY MIND - Yvonne Elliman 38. (33) YOU MAKE LOVIN’ FUN - Fleetwood Mac 39. (43) BABY BABY MY LOVE’S ALL FOR YOU - Deniece Williams 40. (31) NO MORE HEROES - Stranglers 41. (--) LOVE OF MY LIFE - Dooleys 42. (49) DON’T IT MAKE MY BROWN EYES BLUE - Crystal Gayle 43. (41) FROM NEW YORK TO LA - Patsy Gallant 44. (39) DOWN DEEP INSIDE - Donna Summer 45. (40) OXYGENE PART IV - Jean-Michel Jarre 46. (--) HIGHWAYMAN - Brotherhood Of Man 47. (--) WATCHING THE DETECTIVES - Elvis Costello 48. (37) RIGHT ON TIME - Brothers Johnson 49. (--) FLORAL DANCE - Brighouse & Rastrick Band 50. (--) YOU’RE FABULOUS BABE - Kenny Williams I’m struck by how many songs have become widely regarded as classics, as well as the acts. Abba were my top act of the time, with ELO runners-up, but I’d also had periods of being mad on Queen, Roxy, Wings, Donna, Bowie, and with a great body of work even by this time, the Bee Gees. Oldies from Roxy and Righteous Brothers charted in the UK, and recharted in my chart. Righteous Brothers would eventually go all the way - in 1990, on one of it’s many revivals. It is, of course, one of the greatest most perfect pop singles of all-time. Elvis Costello debuts, first in a long career. In at 26, one of the biggest-sellers in the UK of all-time, Wings Mull Of Kintyre, and a future number one.

November 24, 201212 yr Author Three # 1 singles for my UK charts retrospective and four personal # 1s here: Baccara - Yes Sir I Can Boogie ABBA - The Name Of The Game Dooleys - Love Of My Life Brotherhood Of Man - Highwayman [Netherlands - # 15, Belgium # 18, but didn't charted in UK top 50) Never heard this song from Carpenters. thanks Alex, the Carpenters song was a big hit, but unusual for them. The Noosha Fox song is also a bit French-sounding and quirky, I could imagine it in Eurovision (as a good entry!) so you may wish to youtube it it... if the lyrics were less controversial (for 1977, not these days so much). thanks:) john
November 24, 201212 yr These are the ones I bought at the time or had them on an album 3. (4) TURN TO STONE - E.L.O. 4. (5) CALLING OCCUPANTS OF INTERPLANETARY CRAFT - Carpenters (album only - the only Carpenters album I bought) 8. (10) WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS - Queen (album only) 12. (6) 2-4-6-8 MOTORWAY - Tom Robinson Band 16. (9) SHE’S NOT THERE - Santana 18. (29) DADDY COOL - Darts 23. (19) HEROES - David Bowie 26. (--) MULL OF KINTYRE - Wings 28. (28) WONDROUS STORIES - Yes 30. (23) MAGIC FLY - Space 40. (31) NO MORE HEROES - Stranglers 45. (40) OXYGENE PART IV - Jean-Michel Jarre (album only) For some reason Iwasn't a fan of Heores at the time but now think it's a great song. The Righteous Brothers' song is also a cassic.

Thanks Suedehead, yes I bought most of those too (well, it's better than using cash for Uni books when there's a library available:) I also (like most of the nation) under-appreciated Heroes (peaked at 14 in my charts), probably just because there were so many genuine lasting classics in the chart, and it seemed less exciting than No More Heroes at the time... cheers! john
November 25, 201212 yr Great chart as ever, John! I'm happy about Roxy Music reaching No.1 in your Chart. Virgina Plain really worths that honour! I admire keyboards part on this track. John, have you heard the original version of "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" by Klaatu? I'm a big fan of first two Klaatu's albums. Even though i still like Carpenters version too. There's something in Carpenters that touches me. They are my guilty pleasure. :D

They are my guilty pleasure. :D Thanks Andrey:) I love early Roxy Music and Bryan ferry, - if i was forced to sing in public, karaoke or on TV - I think I would do Virginia Plain, I know all the words and it doesnt require any vocal stretching! I think I heard the Klaatu version at the time the Carpenters had the hit, but only once, so I may need to dig it out on Youtube:) The carpenters are also a guilty pleasure of mine, Karen had such a classic voice, she made it sound effortless, but it was smooth as honey, and the easy listening arrangements by Richard were marvellous:) Cheers! john
