Well, for me it's all started with the BBC World Service Top 20 Chart of Week Ending February 7th, 1987.

It was a 30-minutes show, so they played only new entries, the highest climbers and the No.1 song.

From that point i have started to listen to this show every week and recorded it to my tape recorder. Sound quality was pretty poor as i lived outside UK (had they had internet then...) Right after the show is over i was listening to my recording and writing down the Top 20 to my notebook (not a computer one, of cause: it hasn't been invented yet).

I had to writing down the names by ear, so inaccuracy occured quite often. For instance, i made out "Blow Monkeys" as "Blue Monkeys". :D

What was your first chart that you have heard on the radio?

Don't know why, but only top 10 was the same with official UK chart, some positions between # 11 and # 30 were different.

I found this fact only in 2011, when got full UK charts from UKMix site.

I think that I vaguely remember hearing the Christmas 2003 chart on the way to my grandparents' house, but I can't remember.

What was your first chart that you have heard on the radio?

Hi Andrey,

I can't pinpoint the exact first chart rundown, but as I'm extremely ancient by buzzjack standards a rough date will do: Sept 1968, The Beatles had gone to number one with Hey Jude and I was getting excited by Mary Hopkin Those Were The Days (produced by Paul mcCartney) shooting up the charts being mentioned on news bulletins at the time. I'd seen Top Of The Pops and shows before but I didnt know about Alan freemans Top 30 Pick Of The Pops show until then - it was heaven!

:)

Not quite radio, but a really early memory of mine is watching an odd programme on television and these clips of songs playing with numbers on the screen, and 'Mr Blobby' of all people having a big '3' next to him.

The programme was, of course, Top of the Pops, and after a quick Google search it looks like it was the chart of w/e January 8th 1994:

No. 20: FALLER. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love

No. 19: FALLER. Pearl Jam - Daughter

No. 18: CLIMBER. Shabba Ranks - Family Affair

No. 17: CLIMBER. M People - Don't Look Any Further

No. 16: CLIMBER. EYC - Feelin' Alright

No. 15: CLIMBER. Haddaway - I Miss You

No. 14: CLIMBER. Mariah Carey - Hero

No. 13: FALLER. Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle - A Whole New World

No. 12: CLIMBER. Janet Jackson - Again

No. 11: NON-MOVER. Bryan Adams - Please Forgive Me

No. 10: NEW ENTRY. D:ream - Things Can Only Get Better

No. 9: FALLER. Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell

No. 8: FALLER. Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything For Love

No. 7: CLIMBER. K7 - Come Baby Come

No. 6: FALLER. Bee Gees - For Whom The Bell Tolls

No. 5: CLIMBER. Dina Carroll - The Perfect Year

No. 4: CLIMBER. East 17 - It's Alright

No. 3: FALLER. Mr Blobby - Mr Blobby

No. 2: NON-MOVER. Take That - Babe

No. 1: FIRST WEEK. Chaka Demus and Pliers - Twist And Shout

I got that on 12" last year. :D

I started listening to the chart in Autumn 1987 and continued until 1993 when it became intermittent because I was always travelling on Sunday evening when the charts were announced. I wouldn't even bother now because midweeks take the surprise away.

I remember loving Ride On Time when I heard it as it entered at 28. The following week I had no idea of it had climbed or disappeared until it was announced at number 11. We just don't get that buzz any more.

The very first chart I Listened to was the Year End chart for 1987 on Radio 1
3 The Righteous Brothers You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' {1990}

12 The Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody {1990}

26 Patsy Cline Crazy {1990}

43 Bill Medley And Jennifer Warnes (I've Had) The Time Of My Life {1990}

66 Silje Tell Me Where You're Going {1990 Re-Release}

75 The La's There She Goes {1990}

81 Noel Murphy Murphy And The Bricks {1990}

A lot or re-releases in that chart

The very first chart I Listened to was the Year End chart for 1987 on Radio 1

I remember the exact moment I changed the station on the radio and found that by accident - I didn't even know there was going to be one one. It was in the middle of them playing Johnny Logan - Hold Me Now. I was hooked on charts at that stage and really enjoyed it.

Funny enough I found it by accident too. I think I was looking for the Weather report or something at the time :lol: . I remember hearing TPau China In Your Hand and Always On My Mind by the Pet Shop Boys (which was the very first single I bought :D ). Then in the new year I started listening to the chart every week and writing down the top 40. :)

Was there a point where the charts were announced on a Tuesday?
Was there a point where the charts were announced on a Tuesday?

18th Feb 69 to Sept 87 (Wednesday if Mon was a Bank Holiday) Previously you saw the chart as new, on Top Of The Pops, which was a Wednesday evening from 1st Jan 64 to 1965 & a Thursday, there after. Before 1964, you had to wait until Sunday at 4pm on Pick Of The Pops & between March 58 & Dec 61, Saturday at 11pm on Pick Of The Pops, when the charts were aimed at your parents & not teenagers, hence some non playing of Elvis etc.

And the album chart on a Wednesday July 69 to Sept 87 (Thursday if Mon was Bank Holiday). No Album Chart announced, before then. And Albums were included in the overall chart from March 58 to April 66.

Of course i'm talking BBC there. Not a pulled together book, that ignores the BBC's charts.

The first chart I heard on the Radio, would of been Pete Murray on Radio Luxembourg & the Top 20 on Sunday's at 11pm. Somewhere around 1957, which would be the first I can remember! 1957 would be the Sheet Music Chart, as record charts did not feature on Radio until Oct/Nov 57.

On a similar note, I bought 'Another Night' by MC Sar & The Real McCoy which entered at no. 17 that Sunday. I got that level of excitement seeing the track climb up to no. 2 a fortnight later.

As for my first chart show experience, I've mentioned before it was the week 'Got To Be Certain' climbed at no. 2 and Wet Wet Wet were the UK no. 1 in May 1988. I vaguely remember the disappointment on my sister's face when it was announced. :lol:

Defo can't forget mine! It was when Shakespears Sister "Stay" knocked off Wet Wet Wet "Goodnight Girl" from number one around Feb 1992 and being a proper giddy kipper! It was great to be just about old enough to listen to the charts and still be surprised the following week, before it all went tits up from 1995 onwards.
