Clayton reveals suicidal thoughts

Saturday, April 13, 2013

U2 star Adam Clayton has opened up about his suicidal thoughts and bouts of depression in a bid to remove the stigma from mental illness.

The 52-year-old bassist, who is fronting the Walk in My Shoes campaign, said he felt unable to speak about his dark thoughts when he was at his lowest ebb, even though he was part of the biggest rock band on the planet.

The musician said he is now speaking publicity about his demons as part of a campaign to get young men to seek help for depression.

“People generally find it difficult to share those kinds of personal thoughts and I did in my own experience,” said Clayton. “I’m an ex-drinker and a very happy ex-drinker, but before I got to that point, I had been through the whole process of suicidal thoughts and the whole process of depression, and really just not realising these were all the results of drink and that, by talking to the right kind of counsellor, I could actually make some progress and I could see that as my problem.

“I don’t want to make it about alcoholism but I think, whatever the causes of the depression are, it’s the depression that is important and that’s the thing one can treated for.”

Clayton told the Ray D’Arcy Show yesterday that most people, especially young men, tend to shy away from admitting they have a mental illness.

“Mental illness is a very broad word and there is a lot of stigma to it and perhaps a better term is if their state of mind is not right, and if they are not feeling good, that there are a lot of services out there to help you cope,” he said.

“This is really about encouraging young people that may have some difficulties to seek help and to realise there is help out there and there is nothing wrong with seeking help, and that everybody at some point in their lives finds it difficult to cope.”

The bassist, who is currently holidaying in Brazil, also spoke about the band’s hope to have a new album out before the end of the year.

“It’s certainly the plan. I would love to say it was firm but I can’t really say that at this moment in time. It is certainly our intention to have a record out before the end of the year.”

U2's Adam Clayton quit drinking to battle depression

Rock star says he struggled with 'suicidal thoughts'

U2's Adam Clayton has revealed how he quit alcohol to combat the 'suicidal thoughts' he struggled with during his early years with the band.

The 53-year-old rock star, who spoke during the National Walk in My Shoes Day, a fundraising and awareness event for St Patrick's University Hospital in Dublin, urged young people to get help if they are feeling down.

"I am an ex-drinker and I am a very happy ex-drinker but before I got to that point I had been through the whole process of suicidal thoughts," said Clayton, reports the Irish Independent.

The money raised during National Walk in My Shoes Day will go towards providing mental health services to young adults at risk. For more information, go to www.walkinmyshoes.ie.

It was Sydney 1993

This show is infamous as the only U2 concert to be missed by a member of the band. Adam Clayton was so severely hung over that he could not take the stage, and the show could not be postponed as it was a necessary rehearsal for the videotaping of the next night's concert (which, as well as being recorded for official video release, was also to be broadcast live). Adam's bass technician, Stuart Morgan, filled in on the bass, and Bono informed the crowd that Adam was "sick".

U2’s Adam Clayton settles negligence claim against bank and accountants

U2 bass guitarist Adam Clayton has settled his legal action against a bank and firm of accountants over alleged negligence and breach of contract arising from the misappropriation by his former personal assistant of substantial funds from his bank accounts.

His former PA Carol Hawkins was jailed in July 2012 for seven years over stealing €2.8m of Mr Clayton's money. She was convicted on 181 counts of theft from the bassist's bank accounts over a four-year period.

When jailing Ms Hawkins, of Crannagh Road, Dublin 14, Judge Patrick McCartan said her crimes were "rooted in greed and nothing else".

In separate High Court proceedings initiated in 2010, Mr Clayton, Danesmoate Demesne, Kellystown Road, Rathfarnham, Dublin, had sued Bank of Ireland Private Banking Ltd and Gaby Smyth & Co, chartered accountants, Merrion Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

He claimed €4.38 million damages and €4.8 million damages respectively against the defendants for alleged negligence and breach of contract arising from misappropriation by Ms Hawkins.

The High Court was previously told his claim related to the duties owed by bankers to their professional clients and he alleged that he had employed a firm of accountants to monitor and reconcile his accounts.

Both defendants strongly denied liability.

Mr Justice Iarfhlaith O'Neill was told the action had settled and could be struck out. No details of the settlement were outlined.

It does make you wonder how an accountant could miss a discrepancy of 2.8 million euros. Think even I might have noticed that!

Planning bid by U2 star is rejected as 'invalid'

U2 bassist Adam Clayton will have to go back to the drawing board to secure permission to build a "cascade" on a river beside his south Dublin home.

A local authority has deemed a planning application to be invalid because he failed to state that his home was a protected structure, breached rules on the information required in a newspaper notice and did not submit the correct form of notice to alert the public of his plans.

In a planning application to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Mr Clayton sought permission for the removal of "three small weirs" and the "introduction of a cascade" on the Little Dargle river, which is adjacent to his home.

The application was made in his name, and listed the address as Danesmoate Estate, Kellystown in Dublin 16.

The application was declared invalid on 10 grounds.

Mr Clayton bought Danesmoate House in 1987 for a reported €380,000, after recording the album 'The Joshua Tree' in the property.

Built in the 18th Century, it has been subject to a number of external and internal improvements over the years.

Set on 44 acres, the house and bridge over the Little Dargle river are protected structures and are on Kellystown Road, close to Marlay Park.

Adam on the Late Late show last Friday night

ICE-cool actor Idris Elba (41) joined Adam Clayton (54) for a surprise collaboration in Dublin over the weekend -- and to hit the town with a vengeance.

The Herald can reveal how The Wire actor and U2's tee-total bassist met up in celebrity haunt Bucks Townhouse for an impromptu night out.

British star Idris, who stars in BBC detective show Luther, came over to Ireland to guest DJ in the Leeson Street club.

Under his moniker of DJ Big Driis, he got the revellers in a right spin as he belted out the hits for the Bank Holiday party crew.

And they were even more delighted when the actor was joined on a rare night out by his good pal Adam, along with his stunning wife Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho.

An onlooker said: "Idris got a brilliant reception from clubgoers -- they were all high-fiving him and looking to get their picture taken with him. No one could believe it when Adam just strolled into the club with his wife".

The pair first met last year at the premiere of the Nelson Mandela movie, which saw Idris playing the part of the legendary leader.

It was a busy weekend for both stars, with Idris appearing on the Saturday Night Show ahead of his DJ stint while the U2 star was on the Late Late Show on Friday night.

He opened up to Ryan Tubridy about his lengthy battle with depression -- and credits Eric Clapton with helping him deal with his issues.

"From a teenager onwards I always had a low level depression and I found that music relieved that and I think that's why I went into music," he said.

When he was working with the band, he was able to put it to the back of his mind but he also began to drink heavily.

"My drinking increased and increased and because I kept being successful it was covered up and taken care of and I'm in a band with three great guys who put up with me."

His fellow bandmates eventually sat him down and told him to get his act together.

"I was lucky enough to take the hint," he added. Someone put him in touch with Eric Clapton, who said he had to go to rehab.

"He told me a place to go that he recommended was a good place and I said, 'well if he's telling me to go do that, that's what I'm gonna do' and that was when I started listening to what other people said to me instead of doing the exact opposite," he said.
