December 31, 201212 yr Author #30: Girls’ Generation – Paparazzi [19-14-10-8-7-9-13-21-28-36] SNSD bow out now, with the original K-Pop hit. Both in BJSC and in my chart, this song being such a success was quite novel, and it lead to a K-Pop revolution. Korean music is now probably the single most bankable genre in BJSC (having guaranteed points from the Korean stans + generidance lovers) and regularly smashes here. But unfortunately for SNSD, this song has since been surpassed by other Korean songs, two of which are still to come. #29: Calvin Harris – Sweet Nothing (feat. Florence Welch) [21-22-30-26-21-13-14-11-13-17-24-31-38] Calvin’s only song on this countdown, ‘Sweet Nothing’ only really appeals to me because of the featured act. I hadn’t really liked a Calvin single since ‘Feel So Close’ before this, with ‘Let’s Go’ being poor/a sell out and the other one not even being worth talking about. However, ‘Sweet Nothing’ combines fab production and wonderful vocals to provide an actual emotional dance experience. #28: Florence & The Machine – Spectrum [36-29-13-12-8-11-10-13-16-20-28-38] And suddenly within only two eliminations, Florence is gone. ‘Spectrum’ was by far Florence’s biggest hit from Ceremonials. It didn’t perform quite as strongly here but top 10 for a post-album single from an album as old as Ceremonials is rather fab. #27: iamamiwhoami – play [6-8-11-9-16-23-31-x(22)-11-15-25-35-40] Pavel’s highest ranking entry and the best song off kin, ‘play’ initially had a rather short chart run before listening to the album re-ignitied my love. 11/10 moment, don’t know why Radio 1 never got on board. #26: Lana Del Rey – Blue Jeans [11-5-3-8-14-16-18-27-29-27-32-38-40] The third Lana Del Rey single was my least favourite at the time, but a stunning video (as per usual with Ms Del Rey) and the incredible Azealia Banks remix helped this to become a smash on my chart. A #3 peak makes it one of the lowest peaking songs of hers here, but that’s a testament to how big her singles run has been rather than how poorly this performed. #25: Mariah Carey – Triumphant (Get ‘Em) [2-4-4-2-3-8-16-23-31] Mariah’s """comeback""" single bombed in every country of the world, failing to even chart in the US. However, I thought it something of a jam, especially that pop remix of it. The video was great too. #24: 2NE1 – I Love You [20-9-4-3-5-9-14-22-27-26-31-35-39] A stunning song and video combination, 2NE1’s ‘I Love You’ was my favourite Korean girlgroup song of the year. Oricon’s faves could never, I sincerely hope 2NE1 are the first K-Pop group to succeed internationally. Super duper excited for the English version of this song (if it ever appears). #23: Seo In Young – Anymore [4-1-1-2-5-10-16-20-27-32-39] The first (and to date, only) K-Pop #1, ‘Anymore’ was a Daehun BJSC entry and bafflingly one of the less successful ones of 2012. I could easily go on a rant about what the hell is wrong with the sort of people who prefer stuff like ‘Flower Power’ to this, but I won’t. BJSC pop fans are frustrating. By the by, this is the end of K-Pop here :( #22: MS MR – Hurricane [12-7-6-8-7-5-8-10-14-21-27-36] The final of my top 10 hits in BJSC, ‘Hurricane’ was my far my most indie entry. Despite this, it managed to be top 5 on my chart. I was hoping this would deliver the WINNER I so desperately longed for, but unfortunately it only managed 6th. Should have entered ‘Lies’ by Chvrches. #21: Sabina Babayeva – When The Music Dies [39-7-5-3-2-4-7-13-17-23-29-38] Only three Eurovision entries remain as this bows out. ‘When The Music Dies’, the Azeri entry of 2012, was initially quite dull to me. It seemed like another super safe Azerbaijan hit, before it somehow clicked with me for no particular reason. Of course, it is still a super safe Azerbaijan hit, but it’s by far the best one. And with that set gone, only twenty songs remain. These titans are: Anggun - Echo (You And I) Charli XCX - You're The One Cheryl Cole - Call My Name Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen Ellie Goulding - Figure 8 Frost - The Woods Girls Aloud - Something New Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Fashion Monster Lana Del Rey - Ride Lana Del Rey - National Anthem Lena - Stardust Little Boots - Headphones Loreen - Euphoria M. Pokora & TAL - Envole-moi Marina & The Diamonds - Primadonna Mylène Farmer - À L'ombre Nina Zilli - L'Amore È Femmina (Out of Love) Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen - Good Time Shy'm - Et Alors! Shy'm - On Se Fout De Nous Join me tomorrow when they will BATTLE TO THE DEATH to be my EOY #1 *.*
December 31, 201212 yr Oh you scared me when you said that this is the end of K-Pop but I forgot Fashion Monster is J-Pop and yet to come!
January 1, 201312 yr #50: Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness [10-8-8-12-17-25-31-33-40] #47: Marina & The Diamonds – Power & Control [21-16-18-17-21-28-28-29-28-33-31-35-40] #46: Professor Green – Remedy (feat. Ruth Anne) [20-15-12-9-11-15-22-36] #44: PSY – Gangnam Style [3-3-7-11-15-23-29-38] #41: will.i.am – Scream & Shout (feat. Britney Spears) [5-2-4-7-7-9] (still charting) #40: Rihanna – Where Have You Been [10-4-6-5-11-14-26-38] #39: Cheryl Cole – Under The Sun [5-4-6-10-13-18-21-35] #35: Nelly Furtado – Big Hoops (Bigger The Better) [8-6-4-7-8-17-20-31] #32: Marina & The Diamonds – How To Be A Heartbreaker [3-6-10-10-16-22-31-37-34-x(2)-19-27-39] #29: Calvin Harris – Sweet Nothing (feat. Florence Welch) [21-22-30-26-21-13-14-11-13-17-24-31-38] #28: Florence & The Machine – Spectrum [36-29-13-12-8-11-10-13-16-20-28-38] #26: Lana Del Rey – Blue Jeans [11-5-3-8-14-16-18-27-29-27-32-38-40] #25: Mariah Carey – Triumphant (Get ‘Em) [2-4-4-2-3-8-16-23-31] http://media.tumblr.com/04f7c8cbc30e2197e14a3bd6c698cdc7/tumblr_inline_mfceczkezk1ru41qv.gif
January 1, 201312 yr Author And now, we finish the countdown! http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_manv5w7aLG1qdyipzo1_500.gif #20: Kyary Pamyu Pamyu – Fashion Monster [1-1-3-3-7-11-12-15-21-26] (still charting) Kyary débuted on my chart with the fabulous ‘PONPONPON’, which peaked at #7. However, her real breakthrough was still to come. Second single ‘Fashion Monster’ slayed all before it, knocking Girls Aloud off the top spot and being of the few 2012 #1s to clear 100k in a week ([/nerd]). It came along a bit too late in the year to get its deserved Year End position, but coming in at #20 makes Kyary the highest ranking Asian of 2012! http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mdte9lP89a1qmuo9vo1_500.gif (Look at how much fun this woman is having!!!) #19: Ellie Goulding – Figure 8 [3-14-25-35-x-15-4-4-5-9-11-14] Coming in at a far higher EOY position than its chart run would indicate is the second single from Ellie Goulding’s album Halcyon. Not one of my favourite Ellie singles but still very good, I continue to hold out hope that it will somehow take off in the UK. Ellie is of course still to come with 'Anything Could Happen', and is one of only three artists to have two songs in the top 20 of this countdown.
January 1, 201312 yr Author http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1bor9gjgE1qi7spxo1_500.gif #18: Marina & The Diamonds – Primadonna [2-1-1-3-7-10-13-18-24-28-34-39] Coming in at an undeservedly low #18, ‘Primadonna’ looks here like it quickly dropped in my affections. However, my chart started just before the release of Electra Heart, so in reality this was robbed of a much longer chart run. Still quite the jam, I can’t express my sadness enough at the fact that it never quite made that iTunes top 10. I am quite proud that this became a massive hit in Ireland, t'was quite the good year for the Irish chart. http://i50.tinypic.com/105qqzb.jpg (there are no good gifs to be made from this video so here’s TAL looking pretty/M. Pokora looking hot) #17: M. Pokora & TAL – Envole-moi [2-5-3-6-10-9-8-13-17-22-29] (still charting) The lead single from the highly anticipated Génération Goldman album saw the (at the time) one-hit wonder TAL and the hugely successful M. Pokora come together. It was a major hit in France and launched the album to huge success. It’s also given TAL’s career a massive boost, her album is currently selling what can only be described as ‘shitloads’ and her horrendous follow-up single ‘Rien N’est Parfait’ has somehow taken off. January 1, 201312 yr Author http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_meejqmOnq11qcoqlno1_500.jpg (just watch the video it’s flawless) #16: Mylène Farmer – À L’ombre [3-4-8-9-16-5-3-5-5-7] (still charting) The lead single from Mylène Farmer’s latest album Monkey Me was yet another #1 for her in France. It has been similarly big in Umiiruka, and still refuses to die on this chart. It has an absolutely massive chorus and the video is properly incredible (not that Mylène’s videos are ever NOT good), it rivals ‘Oui Mais... Non’ as my favourite Mylène song right now. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4upjruOhm1rudhklo1_500.gif (foot action) #15: Loreen - Euphoria [12-11-10-11-5-1-4-9-16-19-22-31-35] At a time when many an insane BuzzJack poster had this song at #1 for 20+ weeks, ‘Euphoria’ only spent a single week atop the Umiirukan chart, and then just kind of died after that. It’s of course a wonderful song, but I do think I would have placed it a tad lower had I done this chart based on opinion.
January 1, 201312 yr Author "horrendous" and yet #20 at your chart. HOW CONTRADICTORY! I never claimed my chart was GOOD.
January 1, 201312 yr Author http://palcoprincipal.sapo.pt/fotos_noticias/images/2012/Outubro/little_boots_headphones_single_cover.jpeg (the video for this is horrendous so here’s part of the single cover instead) #14: Little Boots – Headphones [20-19-25-6-5-4-5-9-15-19-18-21-29-33-39-38-39] The second of Boots’ 2012 songs, this unfortunately failed to follow ‘Every Night I Say A Prayer’ to #1. It did however spend far longer in my chart and I MUCH prefer it in the longrun. That final chorus is immense. Album #2 is gonna be so good if it ever comes into existence, it's just a pity that only a tiny fraction of the people who heard Hands will ever hear it. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc58fx7QT11qfjhn1o1_500.gif #13: Girls Aloud – Something New [1-2-2-2-2-2-6-10-14-19-23] (still charting) I’m tempted to just say “Christ, isn’t Nuhdeen amazing?”, but I won’t. This came along at the same time as Kyary and was an instant #1 for me, finishing a tad too low for my liking on this countdown. But that’s what you get for releasing in Q4! ‘Something New’ isn’t the best GA single, and it isn’t the most successful ever, but it’s still an amazing listen. It has more flaws than a Girls Aloud song usually has, but the good parts more than make up for them.
January 1, 201312 yr Author http://s17.postimage.org/g1tzqwurj/Del_Ray_National_Anthem.gif #12: Lana Del Rey – National Anthem [25-3-1-1-2-4-6-11-13-18-22-23-32-37] The song that accompanied the video of the year bows out now, leaving Lana with but one song. It was hard to find a gif that properly captured the ‘National Anthem’ video, and this is the best I could find, but you should all totally watch it again. Anyway, this song is all about the middle 8, which is one of the biggest moments on Lana’s album, but the verses are also quite incred. It’s one of those odd cases where the chorus is actually the least amazing thing about the song. #92 or whatever was just insanely low for this, should have gone to #1 immediately after the video premiered. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4qrssqaEE1qcwrtdo1_500.gif #11: Anggun – Echo (You And I) [9-10-8-6-4-3-3-7-9-15-18-24-32-37-38] Loreen wishes. And with that, we enter our top 10. The remaining songs are: Charli XCX – You’re The One Cheryl Cole – Call My Name Ellie Goulding – Anything Could Happen Frost – The Woods Lana Del Rey – Ride Lena – Stardust Nina Zilli – L'Amore È Femmina (Out of Love) Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen – Good Time Shy’m – Et Alors! Shy’m – On Se Fout De Nous I’ll start these in a bit.
January 1, 201312 yr I'm going to say Et Alors! ftw but I could live with any as long as it isn't Cheryl (and looking at them lot, I doubt she stands a chance).
January 1, 201312 yr Author I see someone is still bitter about Cheryl slaying their fave in the album chart.
January 1, 201312 yr #79: Trentemøller / Ane Trolle – Moan [12-11-12-17-26-32-39] The first of many Aeroche BJSC wins, ‘Moan’ is possibly my favourite. So good that I even got over it narrowly beating Charli to the post (and I suppose at least it blocked the at the time horrendous ‘Bomb’), I do believe it’s my favourite winner of the year. #51: Wild At Heart – Darling [12-11-11-10-15-22-30-35] Yet another BJSC entry and this time from the lovely Tinnmark, ‘Darling’ was my 12 pointer and I certainly don’t regret it. For a male vocal to get my 12 is very rare, but this is a beautiful song and totally deserving. These are two of my favourite BJSC discoveries, both sound so unique and beautiful at the same time   I like a lot more songs in this list than I thought I would, Et Alors was one of those rare pure pop entries in BJSC that I really liked.
January 1, 201312 yr Author 85_ASYb4Utk #10: Lena – Stardust [2-6-14-26-19-5-1-2-3-8-13-20-23-27-33-39] I suppose it’s quite unusual for any artist to have the EOY #10 single and call that a disappointing year chart-wise, but following on from ‘Satellite’ and ‘Taken By A Stranger’, both of which would have been huge hits on an Umiirukan chart had it existed at the time (with the latter being a lock for EOY #1), ‘Stardust’ didn’t perform in an overly impressive fashion. This song had quite the ridiculous performance on my chart, due mainly to Lena’s label deciding it was a good idea to premiere it on radio and then pull it from the internet, meaning listening to it was impossible. The (beautiful) video coming out sent this to a deserved #1, before Lana Del Rey came in with ‘Ride’ to steal everyone’s favourite German popstar’s thunder.
January 1, 201312 yr Author I like a lot more songs in this list than I thought I would I choose to take this as a compliment!
January 1, 201312 yr Author PKD2nHJDot4 #9: Nina Zilli - L'Amore È Femmina (Out of Love) [1-1-2-1-2-3-6-8-12-14-19-23-30-36-40] The highest placed Eurovision entry of the year comes in at a disappointing #9 here, due to selling shitloads in a short space of time and then dropping off relatively quickly. Point systems can be a cruel mistress, if counted by “sales” I’m sure this would have been comfortably top 5. But anyway, the song. This is in reality only my second favourite entry of the year (behind Anggun, of course) but what an entry it is. After Italy 2011 I was desperately hoping we wouldn’t get another adult contemporary entry, but this was AC done right. It’s an absolute stormer of a song, better than anything Amy Winehouse (who Nina can’t get out of bed without being compared to) ever got her hands on. 9th place was ridiculously low after Italy came home in 2nd with their turd of a 2011 entry, but I’ll take top 10 considering what happened to poor, brave Anggun.
January 1, 201312 yr Author 3_5b5BLT1CM #8: Charli XCX – You’re The One [4-7-7-5-2-1-2-3-7-12-17-20-25-33-39] Coming in at a somewhat surprisingly low (to me at least) #8 is my second favourite BJSC entry of the year. My biggest hit in the contest so far (finishing in 3rd and being only TWO POINTS from winning), ‘You’re The One’ is very standard Charli, which is to say it’s amazing. Radio 1 very briefly picked up on this and it got to the stunning heights of the 900s on iTunes, but hopefully even more success is to come for Charli when she finally gets around to releasing that album of hers.
