III)', Emeli Sandé's solo version of the Professor Green song on which she features (Pt. II was another version by Green featuring Fink, which never saw the light of day here). There was some understandable interest in it from the off leading to it being an instant top 50 hit on the release of 'Our Version Of Events' but it was propelled all the way to the top 3 by her performance of it at the Olympics closing ceremony. Sadly, like 'Empire State Of Mind' before it, we will never ever hear the original again as the bland ballad version by the featured artist has overtaken it in the public consciousness. In this case however, it wasn't even a good song to start with. Just missing out on the top 40 is The Script's 'Hall Of Fame', the only successful thing to come out of The Voice UK as both frontman Danny O'Donoghue and will.i.am were mentors on the show which led to them collaborating. Though it was a big hit it could be considered a 'default #1', selling less in its two weeks at #1 than in its first week when it was #2; it climbed to #1, the band's first, due to Ne-Yo decreasing sales faster. • ALBUMS • 42. Then just missing the top 40 on the albums side is the massively hyped indie band The Vaccines with their debut album which added three further top 10 weeks (bringing its total to 4 weeks) thanks to New Year price cuts in 2012. 2012 also saw this album produce its second top 40 hit; 'If You Wanna' originally peaked at #53 but thanks to being featured on ads for Made In Chelsea it re-peaked at #35. The 2012 follow-up album 'Come Of Age' (#80 on this list despite being a #1 album) gave them another pair of top 40 hits but they are yet to have a top 30 hit. Edited January 26, 201312 yr by Bré
January 26, 201312 yr You're really showing a lack of a musical education if you don't know much about Springsteen There's no need to be so condescending? It's hardly as if he's as big as The Beatles... And I can't come into this thread anymore because the amount of YouTube videos in the thread always makes my computer crash. :( :kink:

And I can't come into this thread anymore because the amount of YouTube videos in the thread always makes my computer crash. Springsteen was/is not as big as the Beatles sure, but pretty much the biggest live act of the last 40 years, and hugely sucessful in sales terms as well. I would have thought virtually all posters on here would have some basic knowledge of his repertoire and/or reputation

The best thing about it is the brilliant video featuring fellow ginger Rupert Grint, but the song itself isn't too bad, "Small Bump" prevents it from being his weakest single. Then we have the 2nd proper single from "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded", "Pound The Alarm". I'm surprised at how well this appears to have done with it never feeling like a massive hit, indeed it only spent three weeks in the top 10, but it was a post-album single and had a pretty good chart run. It was good at the beginning, now it's even more tired than "Starships" and the album contains much better. Another wonderful video though, so summery. • ALBUMS • 40. Thankfully the excruciatingly awful "Lost My Way" didn't go top 100 thanks to some pre-order deal on iTunes. Now we have Nicki Minaj once again but this is her debut studio album, "Pink Friday", which I bought on release week in November 2010 when it only just went top 40 iirc and now it's been pretty successful, peaking better in both 2011 & 2012. It was my 4th favourite album of 2010, more solid than her follow-up imo and the single releases were all great, especially the biggest hit "Super Bass" which started off as just a bonus track (a la "Va Va Voom" from Roman Reloaded).

I have little to say about that song. Just a very weak version of 'We Found Love'. And I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone anything about the song at #37 - K-Pop's first and almost certainly only major victory around the world, thanks to the factor of 'look at the funny Asian man dancing'. 'Gangnam Style' had 15 top 10 weeks in 2012 and a further two at the start of 2013, making it the joint second longest running top 10 hit of the 21st century thus far (along with 'Hips Don't Lie' and 'I Gotta Feeling' and one week short of 'Somebody That I Used To Know') and it's about to pass the million UK sales barrier, as well as the 1.25 billion (worldwide) YouTube views barrier - yes, it's still rapidly gaining but it seems nobody cares any more since the big billion. It's only as low as #37 here due to being a late-in-the-year hit. There is only one song remaining with 20 or fewer 2012 top 100 weeks. • ALBUMS • 38. Sadly since leaving the chart it's yet to re-enter. No new hits from it were added in 2012 with only 'Time' charting as a re-entry, but they did get a #68 hit with a new song 'Big Man' featuring Liam Bailey which is presumably from an upcoming 3rd album, the song was also available free though. Keane's 4th studio album 'Strangeland', as expected, gave them a 5th straight #1 album (also including the 2010 EP 'Night Train') but its longevity was less expected, even returning to the top 10 months after release and arguably outperforming previous studio album 'Perfect Symmetry' despite producing no top 40 singles.

It's my 3rd favourite song from the album "Wild Ones" all thanks to the Etta James sample. "Levels" by Avicii is still to come just so you know. Another thing these songs have in common aside from them both being big #1 hits is that they both use samples which help make them as good as they are. "R.I.P.", the debut single from Rita Ora as a lead artist, remains the best single to be taken from the album "Ora" - not a difficult task mind. They've since reverted to flopville with an extremely ill-advised choice of third single (a cover of TLC's 'Waterfalls' that charted at just #21). Then something considerably better is at #33, one of my favourite songs of the year in the form of Swedish House Mafia's 'Greyhound'. For an instrumental track that was available for much of its life only in its full 6:51 form it was shocking to see it get as high as #13 but infinitely more shocking that it actually ended up with incredible longevity - with 35 weeks in the top 100 it's their longest running single currently, though the follow-up 'Don't You Worry Child' feat. Another hangover album is at #33, this one from 2010 - Rihanna has released two full albums since 'Loud'; the immediate follow-up 'Talk That Talk' is still to come but 'Unapologetic' was released far too late in the year to get anywhere here, making it to #125 in 6 weeks. 'Loud' charted continuously through 2011 - it actually only reached #1 in 2011, a fact reflected above unlike Jack's mistake in the last post with Florence - and almost did the same in 2012, only dropping 5 chart weeks throughout the year. It seems unlikely to repeat its eternal presence in 2013 having already missed out on three out of five chart weeks. 'Loud' produced 4 top 10 hits, fairly standard for a Rihanna album, but its only track to chart in the top 100 during 2012 was 'S&M' which just hung over for a week at #86.

A fairly decent album the one time I listened to it and I do love the singles - doesn't "50 Ways To Say Goodbye" feature some of the best lyrics known to man kind. The more recent Mumford & Sons album, "Babel" (which won "Album Of The Year" at the Grammys last weekend), just missed the countdown at #51 due to being released too recently, but "Sigh No More" makes it in twenty places higher after people continued to buy it in droves throughout the year. February 17, 201312 yr It's that time of year once again and so it's time for the countdown of the points chart top 200 of 2012 *.* In case you're not familiar with this, it's a countdown of the top 200 singles of 2012 according to a simple points system based on the weekly UK Singles Chart Top 100s as compiled by the Official Charts Company. The period covered is 53 chart weeks, from week ending 7 Jan 2012 (Coldplay 'Paradise' at #1) to week ending 5 Jan 2013 (James Arthur 'Impossible' in its second week at #1, the last chart to be announced). In every week, 100 points have been attributed to the #1, 99 points to the #2, 98 to the #3 and so on down to 1 point to the #100. The songs here are ranked based on their cumulative tally of points across all 53 weeks, with ties broken by peak position in 2012 and then by weeks in the top 100 in 2012 (then finally alphabetically by artist then song, but this only applies to the very lower reaches of the chart). The chart will be presented by myself and Jáhq as it was last year. Going for a record time here (anything less than 5 months would achieve that )! How on earth did I miss this thread before? :o I could have saved you much calculation - I would have just substituted 100 down to 1 into my spreadsheet in place of the weekly sales figures, and had the list in seconds...

Flo Rida took Can You Blow My's masterpiece to a much wider audience and turned the song into a big hit, even going to #1 in the USA, but sadly the original has been rather forgotten since. I've heard people saying the lyrics in the chorus of 'Whistle' are a euphemism, I don't quite see that myself. Then at #29 it's Coldplay who prove that even with ridiculously sloppy management, Rihanna will always sell singles for you. I remember thinking some time before they FINALLY released this that they'd left it too late for 'Princess Of China' to be a big hit but was very glad to be proven wrong. Sadly it wasn't as big a hit in America. • ALBUMS • 30. He made a false start with now forgotten debut single 'Let The Sun Shine' in 2010, then buggered off for a year and tried again with the much better 'Earthquake'. At that point he seemed to be on the right lines again, but then he chose the über generic 'Last Time' as the lead single for his debut album 'Electronic Earth'. 'Express Yourself' did quite well for itself as the first post-album single, but then he released 'Treatment' and was duly rewarded with a non-top 50 hit. He managed to end on a huge high with sixth and final single 'Beneath Your Beautiful' benefiting from a great X Factor performance and Emeli Sandé's presence and becoming a massive #1 hit. The album did alright overall but so many missed opportunities for it to have been so much bigger. And speaking of disappointments, Maverick Sabre is at #29. What happened to the Maverick of songs like 'Jungle' and why on Earth was he replaced by a dullard whose idea of a good lead single is 'I Need'? Mind, it was probably a good decision for his album sales, but still. Edited February 20, 201312 yr by Bré

Not too fussed by this one really, prefer some of his other stuff including "I Could Be The One" which recently got to #1. "Good Feeling" kinda stole his thunder (I'd much rather listen to that personally). Another DJ/producer follows, French David Guetta featuring American Idol judge Nicki Minaj, released as like the 5th(?) single from "Nothing But The Beat" and another one that did well with only a #8 peak. It's a good track but became a bit boring and there's better on the album ("Without You" & "Repeat" >>>>>>>>). • ALBUMS • 28. The lead single was great until it became overexposed and the rest was always a bit mediocre, give me "Songs About Jane" anyday. A much better album follows, Drake isn't the type I'd normally like but I bought "Take Care" last year and it includes many great tracks, my favourite being "Marvins Room" (which peaked just outside of the top 100) and "Crew Love". "The Motto" however is awful. YOLNO.

February 28, 201312 yr Yeah I asked Bray about that and he said not to include it as it's a funny one with it also appearing on a re-release of "Hands All Over".

Candi Staton's 'You Got The Love' despite them having several other well-known songs beside them. It was the fifth single from second album 'Ceremonials' and came after 'Never Let Me Go' only made #84. Of course the vast majority of Spectrum's sales came from the Calvin Harris remix which most predicted would turn the song into a hit, but even making the top 10, let alone #1 and let alone #1 for three whole weeks was pretty much a shock to everyone. Also in this section is some crap by an old American talent show winner. • ALBUMS • 26. Not much to say here, just a leftover album from the end of 2011 kept afloat by the above hit single (which did significantly better than her only good song, its predecessor 'Mr. Know It All', in all but peak position). Third single 'Dark Side' scraped the top 40 and she had one more top 100 in 2012 with 'Catch My Breath', a new track off her 'Greatest Hits - Chapter One' album which has done rather well Stateside but only made #51 here and spent 2 weeks on the chart. Speaking of Greatest Hits, surprisingly the only one to make this top 50 is the one at #25 from Bee Gees. Any album called 'Number Ones' is likely to be a bit misleading as only a few artists have enough UK #1s to fill up an entire album but the set does contain their five #1 singles as well as a bunch of other top 10 hits. A few of the songs on it were presumably never UK singles as they never charted. 'Number Ones' started as a leftover from 2011 as well - and that was a re-release, originally the album came out in 2004 - but it reached its chart peak of number four after the tragic but hardly unexpected news of the death of Robin Gibb, one of the three Gibb brothers who made up the core of the band.
