January 21, 201312 yr Thanks fchd! Now, let me see...a song I don't even remember from Blobby Williams, Eminem's rubbish mates, something forgettable by a Fugees member (who were virtually guaranteed top 5 with everything they did at the time), some rubbish skater-rock, two half-arsed cover versions, the poor man's Backstreet Boys etc etc etc ..... and IAN VAN DAHL....Christ on a bike, one of the most annoying songs ever released!!! Robbed they were, robbed!
January 21, 201312 yr Author Now that we have the tyranny of will.i.am, Wyclef Jean doesn't seem so awful.

January 22, 201312 yr These classic songs came into my mind: Hot Stuff – Donna Summer (’79/11) Sort of surprise for me. I've always thought it was No.2 hit back in 1979. And her follow up single Bad Girls reached only No.14. Amazingly that this has happened in the year when disco music was going through its heyday.
January 22, 201312 yr Well, we'll have to disagree, Shoat, I think Fields of Gold is hideous. I will say that the album probably made up for the lack of singles sales there - was it Ten Summoner's Tales? I think that hit the top around the same time on the back of FoG and the fact people who liked it were all ancient and could afford to buy the album ;) Unfinished Sympathy is an interesting one - some claim it's because there wasn't a huge amount of airplay due to the band having to change their name to Massive during the Gulf conflict, but I think it's just because it was a genuine grower. But, again, people held out for the album (Blue Lines). I mean, Safe From Harm only reached 25 and it's arguably better than Unfinished Sympathy. The fact Massive Attack produce such brilliant albums probably accounts for the fact they've only ever had one top 10 single (Teardrop at #10). Ironic reaching 11 is a brilliant return given how many copies of Jagged Little Pill she'd sold by then. ANY punk record hitting the top 40 was a massive achievement - so Teenage Kicks at 31 and The Passenger at 22 would be the equivalent of top 3 nowadays with all the built-in hype. Des'ree...er, not getting that at all, that's not a classic. Although Teardrop did make the top 10, it's also a fantastic example of a track whose true status as an all-time classic far exceeds its chart performance (if I remember right, it only scraped top 10 behind the likes of Steps, the Mavericks and All Saints' abysmal RHCP cover - a travesty!) Although you're right that Alanis had already shifted a shedload of albums before Ironic was released as a single release, the strange thing is that the fifth single (Head Over Feet) DID make the top 10, so for me Ironic is still a little bit of an anamoly.
January 22, 201312 yr Author Jagged Little Pill didn't hit number 1 until Ironic was released so it's not that remarkable that it hit number 11 - both in April 1996 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_in_British_music from Polyhex 20/04/1996 Alanis Morissette Ironic 11 {11}-16-22-25-23-27-30-44-67->9 Edited January 22, 201312 yr by AnthonyT
