Loads of interesting picks here. Anyone want to discuss their choices? How did you get into them? Favourite song, album?

I'll go first, not a definite top three but three acts who fit into the forum description who I love for different reasons:

Green Day - American Idiot is still probably my favourite album ever and had as strong an influence on my musical life as any other. I got it when I was 11, heard a completely different record when I was 15-16 and now I'm 20 and it keeps growing on me. The rest of their output is patchy but they've delivered fantastic albums (Dookie, Nimrod) and songs (J.A.R., Good Riddance) with reasonable regularity.

Dave Grohl - cheating a bit but probably the most universally adored man in modern rock and for good reason. Nevermind and In Utero wouldn't be the same without his input, his work with QOTSA brought about one of my favourite albums in Songs For The Deaf and Foo Fighters are probably the best singles band of the last 20 years - not to mention an incredible live act.

Muse - even as their studio output gets more ridiculous, they can't help but grow in stature as a live act to the point where I don't think there's a better stadium act in the world today. The 2nd Law was something resembling a return to form (although a good half of The Resistance is still excellent) and their evolution over albums two to four, from nu-Radiohead to something not entirely of this planet, is wonderful to behold. Knights of Cydonia remains a unique experience.

Within Temptation

Heard Angels on a random video about Tomb Raider 6 years ago and loved it. Went ahead and bought The Heart of Everything which had just been released and

loved every track. Hooked ever since. Sharon den Adel has one of the best voices in the world, she has a great range. The band have a great mix of songs and

are more than your average rock band

Tarja

I much prefer her solo work to her stuff with Nighwish, but Nemo remains a classic. I adore having her operatic voice put against some really amazing rock-ey

music, so many of her songs are really powerful both in terms of production/vocals and lyrics.

Stereophonics

Always liked them really, dunno why. They were the first non-camp music I got into  Was never a fan of other Britsh rock bands for some reason, I just stuck with the Phonics.

Killing Joke - Well, firstly they invented Industrial Rock and that alone should be enough but when their not pummeling you with some of the most intelligent, intense and brutal music I've ever heard and the mood takes them they can produce beautiful and slightly menacing monoliths such as Love Like Blood. There is no other band quite like them.

Glad their is another Sabbath lover out their!

My dad was quite a big Sabbath fan in his earlier days, so thankful that he got me into them from a young tender age.

Also ended up buying him this War Pigs limited print for Fathers day the other week, as his 'Back office aka rehearsal room' is lacking any posters or artwork!

I love it and think it would make a wicked tattoo!
