Posted August 20, 200618 yr I think that the UK is very prejudice against European language music. I think Record Companies and Radio & TV Stations should take some responsibility. After all European countries buy English language music. For example Rammstein sing in German and they have had a few small hits in the 30s but I think they would have been much bigger without the Radio & TV bias. Most record companies think that apart from UK acts we should buy US rubbish. It's not fair that we should have to pay over the odds for imports just because of the stupid record companies not releasing some good music. As another example - take Shakira. No. 1 all this time and no exposure from R1. This is great music missing from R1 yet they play rubbish like Beyonce. WHAT DO YOU THINK? Edited August 20, 200618 yr by Euro Music
August 20, 200618 yr I don't think the UK is very prejudice against Euro music. I think it is just our culture. The UK is an island, therefore we have an island mentality. We are just not very receptive to learning foreign (European) languages.
August 20, 200618 yr I already own lots of CD's of singers who sing in foreign languages - Italian, Spanish, French etc. Some of which are amongst my favourite albums. But its very hard to find them, even on Amazon. It's a real shame as we in the UK are missing out on some tremendous music through our parochialism and the short sightedness of our majpr record labels and retailers.
August 20, 200618 yr i do think that there is a kind of prejudice BUT keep in mind that nearly every forign song that has been released in the UK has just been total cheesy. so in a sense, people cant be blamed. but i also think there is also an ignorance in the uk towards foreign languages. most people just think english is the be all and end all.
August 20, 200618 yr I think the reason why English music is successful in Europe is that English is a language that is easy to speak. Every European kid has to learn English at school, so you understand at least the chorus of a song, that's enough to sing it along. It's much harder to sing the chorus of a French, Italian or German song, when it's not your mother tongue or you haven't learned this language at school.
August 20, 200618 yr my three favourite artists all sing in different languages; Shakira, Utada Hikaru and Nelly Furtado. Ive learned that if the people like it, they wil buy it, but it's an uphill battle to do so, and sometimes the artists have to conform to what the public assume someone from there country should be singing about. for me though, If I like music i'll buy it, wether it be spanish, japanese or portugese, it's the music that matters, and sometimes listening to it can also help you to grasp the language without having to learn it formally
August 20, 200618 yr if they start to do foreign singers, then they shud start with people who are already have been in our charts and start selling there music, i no they have already done that with shakira, and i actually like some of her foreign songs
August 20, 200618 yr Loads of people speak English so I guess that's why UK music is very popular in Germany etc.
August 20, 200618 yr I buy masses of foregin music-Shakira's La Tortura is a fine example...I love it so much!!!
August 20, 200618 yr If the song is good that's enough for me. It is nicer if I can understand the lyrics, but it doesn't entirely put me off if I can't.
August 20, 200618 yr I buy lots of foreign language music too. It doesn't make a difference to me what language it is as long as it's good. The UK is ignorant to other languages I think. There's a lot of people that have that holiday mentality where "I don't have to speak French cuz they all speak English." Because English is the biggest international language we think we don't have to make an effort with other languages.
August 20, 200618 yr La Tortura was one of Europe's biggest tracks last summer, but shunted in the UK. I think the UK was one of the only countries not to have it released as a single.
