However, the cocky ex-Take That star, 39, has royally blown his own trumpet this time. Robbie, 39, asked The Queen why she hadn’t given him an OBE, like his pal Gary Barlow. The cheeky moment at last year’s Royal Variety Performance was captured on camera and will be shown on ITV’s documentaryOur Queen, which airs at 8pm tomorrow. Desperate Rob even serenaded Her Majesty with I Will Always Love You to try to bag the gong. We’re told: “Robbie was left red-faced and embarrassed because The Queen didn’t even know who he was. She mistook him for David Walliams.” Ouch! Speaking off-stage to Her Maj at London’s Royal Albert Hall, he said: “All this OBE stuff you’ve given Gary, remember I will always love you, ma’am.” He then started to sing the Whitney Houston classic. When asked later how his meeting with the Queen went, he said: “She thought I was someone else.” He said he felt a “mixture of excitement and shame” after the encounter. It’s not the first time Robbie has expressed his frustration at not winning an honour. He previously said: “The Queen has seen me perform a number of times now. Gary Barlow OBE. Robbie Williams? Nothing.”
