Posted August 21, 200618 yr I've never thought I would have posted this but... from ZeeNews Brian May plans a new Queen album Washington, Aug 20: Queen`s founding member Brian May has reportedly disclosed plans to work on the first Queen album since the demise of the band’s vocalist Freddie Mercury in 1991. The legendary guitarist had earlier this year recruited ex-Free singer Paul Rogers to take over vocal duties for a series of live dates, and now wants to record new tracks with him and drummer Roger Taylor. "I talked to Paul, and confirmed we will be heading into the studio in October. Now it really looks as if we are on. (It) will bring us all to a new place. We will take it gently at first, the priority being to feel good, and put ourselves in the mood to create," Contactmusic quoted May as saying. Brian May has a musical career spanning more than 3 decades and has penned many hits including `We Will Rock You`, `The Show Must Go On`, `I Want It All`, `Fat Bottomed Girls`, `Who Wants To Live Forever`, `No-One But You`, and `Save Me`. August 21, 200618 yr Disgrace Queen WAS Freddie Mercury and while I like Paul Rodgers as a singer to have him or indeed anyone replace Freddie is sacrilege to me As a tour it is different as it was Queen + Paul Rodgers as the title to make him look like a guest singer but a studio album would make it official as Freddie's replacement and Freddie is irreplaceable
August 21, 200618 yr Hmmm, talk about 'flogging a dead horse'...... -_- I agree with Ozzy (jeez, this is becoming a habit, me agreeing with Craig.... ), Queen pretty much WAS Freddie Mercury, as a band they relied on his charisma totally.... I remember what happened when Ray Manzarek and Robbie Kriger tried to ressurect The Doors with Ian Astbury taking over the Jim Morrison duties..... ....OOOOOOOOHHHHH DEEEEEEAARRRRRR!!!!

August 21, 200618 yr An horrific idea. Queen died when Freddie Mercury passed away in 1991. You would have thought they would have learnt from the example of the band they tried to hopelessly rip off in the 1970s - Led Zeppelin - and call it a day after a one of their four members died. What next, Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr play together & call themselves The Beatles..... I don't think so.
August 21, 200618 yr I am a Queen fan and, although I've no problem with Brian May and Roger Taylor collaborating with Paul Rodgers on an album, it certainly shouldn't be called a Queen album. Queen consisted of 4 members and without Freddie and bassist John Deacon, they cannot call themselves Queen. John Deacon said, on Freddie's death, that Queen was no longer, he didn't participate in last years tour and he won't be playing any part in any so called future 'Queen' recordings.

People point to Pink Floyd and say - "Well, they survived without Syd", yeah, but they had Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour, two incredibly enormous charismatic egos and talents, to keep that one afloat. Queen only had one charismatic ego - and that was Freddie. May's nothing more than a bubble-permed gonk who shamelessly tried to rip off the guitar styles of Jimmy Page, Hendrix and Richie Blackmore.... I think if McCartney and Starkey tried to palm us off with a fake Beatles without John or George, there would be riots on the streets of Liverpool and an angry mob outside 'Sir' Paul's big, posh mansion....

Queen were/are my favourite band/live act of all time, but I have to admit that was largely down to the vocals, presence and charisma of Freddie Mercury - he is totally irreplaceable for me. At the same time, I do think that Brian May & Roger Taylor are very talented, a part of my love for Queen was for their music and they were responsible for writing and playing some of what I enjoyed, it wasn't only Freddie's songs that I love afterall. So, it seems a shame that because Freddie died, it's been hard for them to continue doing what they are good at and love and can't go on to write/record new music - it's a difficult issue though and I'm wondering if, perhaps you're right Tilly - maybe a different name would be more appropriate for their next chapter.
August 23, 200618 yr maybe a different name would be more appropriate for their next chapter. Thing is though, how many people would really be that interested..? I'm thinking the whole idea behind May and Taylor calling it a 'Queen' project is purely commercial. They know damn fine that if they call it a 'Queen' project then they'll sell a lot more than by calling it something else, it's just trading on the name innit...? And yes, I do believe that May is that cynical and calculated, remember that godawful 'collaboration' he did with that boy-band, turning one of Queen's classics into an utter joke? I dont know of a single real Queen fan who had a good thing to say about that one.....

Oh yes, I agree with you - I guess I was thinking in a moral sense, I was forgetting it's all about the pennies silly me ;) :P :D

August 23, 200618 yr can we please shift this to the retro area along with simple minds. :puke2: Yeah, not sure whether "Indie/Alternative" is the place to talk about Queen myself to be honest..... Music: Culture seems the appropriate place to talk about Queen.....
August 23, 200618 yr Moved as requested ... Cheers Cassidy. I suppose it could either have been this or Retro, but the discussion seems to be more about current things that the group that are calling themselves 'Queen' are doing rather than talking about their 70s/80s incarnation....
