Chart Commentary

from Gavin Ryan

Two brand new No.1's on both the singles and albums charts this week, so firstly the singles.

Justin Timberlake knocks Shakira off the top after nine weeks, with his first single off his forthcoming album, "Futuresex/Lovesounds" (out Sept 9th), "Sexyback". It also debuts at No.1 on the downloads chart this week.

This is JT's second solo No.1 single, his first also a No.1 debut, "Rock Your Body" back in May 2003. But it's also his fifth appearance at the top of the charts. Along with his two solo singles, there's "Bye Bye Bye" as a part of N*Sync in March 2000, then as guest vocalist with The Black Eyed Peas on "Where is the Love" (Sept 2003) and on Snoop Doggs "Signs" (May 2005).

Justin is the first male since Chris Brown in January 2006 to debut at No.1, and the first solo male singer at the top of the charts since Bob Sinclar's "Love Generation" in the last two weeks of February.

It's also been awhile between sex at the top of the charts. The last "Sex" titled song to be at the top was way back in late January 1992, when Salt-N-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex" was No.1 for three weeks, and it takes the "sex" tally up to four No.1's, with Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" (Jan 1979) and "I'm Too Sexy" (Nov 1991) by Right Said Fred being the other two songs.

Also, to get technical, the last "back" song was only last year, when Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" was No.1 for a week in the last week of May.

The next highest new entry at No.22, is from a former UK No.1 single (July 2006), Lily Allen's "Smile". The album "Alright, Still" has been on the album charts for the past three weeks, reaching No.7. And like Sandi Thom she also got her break in the UK by performing over the internet to break into the mainstream. Her father is British comedian Keith Allen, who has also hit the UK charts.

The second single from the No.1 album "Stadium Arcadium" for the Red Hot Chili Peppers debuts this week at No.27. "Tell Me Baby" is the groups 23rd Top 100 single, and follows on the from the recent No.8 single "Dani California".

At No.30 is "Be Without You", the 10th Top 100 single for Mary J. Blige. This is the second single off her "The Breakthrough" album, and the first to reach the Top 50. There has also been the recent radio hit "One" on which she duets with U2, but that hasn't been released as a single in Australia. Mary's biggest single was the Top 10 hit from September 2001, "Family Affair", and this new single was a former No.5 US Pop Chart single, and a No.1 on their Dance and on the R&B Charts.

Coming in at No.40 is the first Australian chart single for Field Mob. "So What" is a former No.10 single in the US, and the duo from the deep south of the US, Albany, Georgia (birthplace of Ray Charles), have gotten Ciara onboard as the guest vocalist on this track. The duo is made up of Boondox Blax and Kalage (pronounced Kal-arge).

Debuting at No.52 last week, but this week moving up to No.41 (so new to the Top 50) is former Big Brother contestant Danielle with her debut single "Underneath the Radar". It's a cover of the Underworld track from 1988 which originally reached No.9 nationally.

Right behind Danielle at No.42 is the first and fourth single for James Blunt, "High". It was originally the first single released from his No.1 album "Back to Bedlam", but only made the Top 100, and now thanks to the album being a lot higher profile, Warner have re-released the track and this time it makes the Top 50.

Well I mentioned above that we have both new No.1 albums this week, and the new No.1 album this week is the third album from Christina Aguilera, "Back to Basics". Her debut self-titled album (2000) reached the Top 20, her second album "Stripped" reached the Top 10 (late 2002), and now she does better than before by debuting at the top of the charts with Gold status in it's first week.

It's the first time since November 2005 that a solo female artists has been at the top of the albums chart, that's when Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" was at No.1 for a single week. Since then no other females have been at the top of the album charts, with Something for Kate having a female member in their band being the closest. Also this year we've had another "Back to..." album at No.1, that being James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam".

With 6 of the Top 10 albums belonging to female this week, here are some other female stats that Christina has eclipsed. She is the 187th American Performed Album to hit No.1 on the albums chart, the 106th American Artist to top the charts, the 65th Female to the No.1 spot, and the 24th American Female to be at No.1. It's also our 528th No.1 album in Australia.

Behind Christina at No.2 is Pink's "I'm Not Dead" album, which this week hit's it's highest peak.
