Hurt is the big stand out there, ten years on, its definitely something of a modern classic.

I agree! Other standouts on the list for me are 'Hitz', 'Balloons', 'Limit To Your Love', kind of 'Gone Up In Flames' (a few seconds of it is iconic due to it being used as the Inbetweeners theme tune :P), 'As We Enter' and 'Cousins'

Dannii Minogue 'I Don't Wanna Take This Pain' - a bit unfortunate for her 5th single, after the first 4 all went Top 20.

What song is that?

Dark Side is probably the most surprising under-performer on the list. It's a brilliant song that followed a smash hit from a pretty successful international star, it's baffling how badly it did.

#39 hits since 2002 (same disclaimer as before still applies):

Beyoncé - End Of Time

I'm almost certain this is wrong. Didn't it peak at #22 or #23 when it was released.

Nope, definitely #39. Sorry :P

No, that is definitely correct. It peaked at #39 and spent 2 weeks in the top 40.

Deserved better of course, her best song.

Omg I must've been deluding myself this past year believing that it peaked at #23. Why so precise though? Did it peak really high on iTunes (relative to it's official peak of course).

Back to the 40s for a while...

I think this was the first single to peak at 40 in the 1980s and it was the debut single by a significant act:

(Dexys Midnight Runners 'Dance Stance')

And here's another one from 1997, which took a re-release to get even this high:

(Beth Orton 'She Cries Your Name')

Whilst I don't think the sixties charts are that meaningful this far down, worth a mention for Tommy Cooper's comedy song about suicide:

Here's the only Top 40 hit from an act who are better known for another song of theirs that was used as TV theme:

(Alabama 3 'Ain't Going To Goa')

And back to the very fertile year of 1997, here's what proved to be the first and least successful single from one of the big albums of 1998:

(Catatonia 'I Am The Mob')

Does anyone remember this?

Ooooohh! Jann arden's insensitive from the summer of 1996! Had forgotten about that one! Lovely track, thanks for the reminder!

1993 was the year I first got interested in the UK singles chart. In that year, I remember that a novelty hit, "Suntan" by some guy named Stanley hit #40 in July (I think) and then faded away.

I haven't found it in YouTube, does anyone remember? I remember that the chorus said something like "suntan in my toes".

Stan - Suntan - (3 Weeks) 31/07/1993 -{40}-50-68

It certainly used to be on YouTube, I had to look it up once. The kid who lived next door had a copy, but we smashed it and blu-tacked it to the ceiling.

Here it is, complete with the video and the interesting facts from the ITV Chart Show:

And believe it or not, here's the B-side:

Tim Berners-Lee must be so proud.

Also from 1993
