Oh, "Cotton Eyed Joe".

Love "All That She Wants". Ironically, it hit #1 on the single sales chart in the U.S. for 3 weeks when it peaked at #2 on the Hot 100, while it was the other way around for "The Sign"!

Two classic Europop songs there, takes me right back to my teenage years so naturally I like both. :D

Iirc, when 'All That She Wants' was #1 in the UK, both 'Wheel Of Fortune' and 'Happy Nation' were riding high in other countries at the same time. Rare to see an act (particularly a new act) having three hits simultaniously across Europe where it's usually just the one song dominating in all countries.

So many ABBA songs after I was dismissed by suggesting they'd be in the chart! :P

The most famous song ever to be written about a spotlight? The album of the same name was completed by mid 1980 but there was no title track and this is the final track they recorded for it, the song ended up becoming their best selling single of the decade in addition to being the last of their nine chart toppers.

I'm 100% certain what the top two are, both from the crazy country I was in last month (but which one? :o)

But I'm shocked at what MUST be #3, I had no idea it had sold so much if it is what I think it is!

What surprises me the most about 'Super Trouper' is that it only reached #11 in Sweden. I thought this was one of those songs that went to no. 1 all over Europe but obviously not.

I am pretty certain that it is the latin word for water that is at the top !

Released three times before it finally made the charts “Take On Me” with its pioneering pop promo had the grave misfortune to run into Jennifer Rush and come of the worse. In between versions remixes were undertaken, and a whole new video was shot which got heavy MTV play and made the boys into heart throbs and consistent hit makers for the remainder of the decade.

02. SATURDAY NIGHT- Whigfield (1,140,000)

YEAR: 1994

PEAK POSITION: 1

Produced by the same guy behind 80s europop star Spagna, this was a big hit for Sannie Carlson (Whigfield’s proper name) in 1992 and took 2 years and several remixes to finally hit it big with holiday makers over the summer of 1994. Demand for the record was so big that it moved over 150k in its first week to dislodge the mighty “Love Is All Around” and had seen its sales inflate to 685,000 after just 4 weeks on sale.

Perfect top 3.

"Take On Me" though overplayed, still sounds joyous from the first opening synths.

"Saturday Night" is great, great fun and has a hook that won't get out of your head as soon as you listen to it.

And the #1... the video, the song, the baby vocals... everything about it is perfect.

I had no idea Take On Me sold that much, and it's shocking to see no Swedes in the top 3! Although I guess Don't You Worry Child will outsell Take On Me before long...

How long until we get another Swedish million seller?

Having the grave misfortune to be up against “Spice Up Your Life” which meant that even though it sold over 180k it failed to debut at the top. No matter as it won the war anyway outselling that track by about a million and attracting a lawsuit from Mattel over the use of its trademark brand, a case which it eventually lost, this is, at any rate, the biggest scandipop song EVER (probably) – a fitting tribute?

Pretty unbelievable that a novelty Scandipop song is so close to being one of the top 10 biggest selling songs EVER in the UK! It's cheery and poppy but far from my favourite Aqua song. Thanks for compiling Gezza, very interesting countdown!

I never saw the appeal of Saturday Night. Take On Me is amazing.
