Which are you most likely to do - preorder a track on iTunes & wait 6 weeks to get it like NB this week or illegally download it or stream it?

It depends on the artist really, I'm not buying all my music but I'll buy singles from the artists I support/loon for/love the song from

When you say stream do you mean as in Spotify and those platforms? Cause you'd have to wait the 6 weeks to stream it as well, as the streaming release date is usually, I don't know a case where it hasn't been, the same date as the release date. Unless you mean streaming as in playing on Youtube, then completely ignore this post. :P

And I download all my music illegally but also stream. I just don't have the disposable income to buy my favourite tracks and albums, or be it just albums I want to listen to (which is a lot), every week. I do stream (spotify) a lot though! It sure doesn't help that you have to wait up to 6 weeks from a premiere of a track till you can buy it too. A lot of my friends do not buy songs they previously liked simply because they either downloaded it illegally as they could not find it legally (as it wasn't released yet) or because they got annoyed with it being on every radio station and music channel for the past 4 weeks. I say disposable income but I'm only 16 so don't really have that much money anyway.

I remember that back in 2003-2004 I thought, finally in the digital age all the music will be available everywhere almost immediately. Unfortunately it didn't happen :( which I really don't understand. Personally for me a few weeks old song is like an oldie ;) I don't want to wait weeks to get something I really want. Fortunately there are other sources as well to get the songs, mostly for free, in advance of their official issue date ;)
I always stream. I couldn't imagine my musical life without it.
I normally pre-order it and then find an illegal download to tide me over until the songs release date.

As has already been said, I'm not sure what you mean by 'stream' in this context, but I do normally buy songs I love, probably helps that they're more often than not already out and I use Amazon rather than the iTunes store (I still use my library though). If the song's not out yet, I can usually wait in all honesty but if its just ridiculous/not available in the UK, then I will gladly illegally download (and I don't think anyone should not be expecting people too in all honesty)

The reason I did this poll was really to see people views on having to wait 6 weeks for a song as I find it really annoying and it goes against the democracy of the chart. This week is a perfect opportunity because NB is doing so Brillant and on course to sell many copies but its in the weeks after we see how it can maintain its sales - it's basically a question look at Get Lucky and its maintained success why can't all songs get a release like that and then even artists that cannot build that established hype will do well on the quality of their songs.

As for streaming I don't actually know how the chart works but songs seem to enter after their single release so I guess I'm including You Tube availability too!

I usually download it from the internet so I can listen to it until it's available to stream on Spotify/download from iTunes when a song isn't on Spotify

There was no 'wait until it's released' option, which would have been my choice.

I sort of thought the pre order option was basically that because you have to wait until its released to download.

So far its 12-4 against preorder/downloading a song which shows the limitations of a chart which doesnt include streaming data & how songs actually lose sales overall when they are held back 7 weeks before release apart from when its a genuinely popular song like NB or Rudimental!

If the music was any good then they wouldn't need protracted, targeted marketing campaigns. I love it when a band just sticks something out there. You can do that easily these days, just do that.

^^ Exactly right mate a bit like Chocolate rising to the top 20 and selling 250k even though they only had decent radio 1 support. As you say if a song was good enough it would rise to a certain level!
Neither! I'd rather wait and buy the album properly when it comes out. I went to all ends last week to avoid listening to Daft Punk's new album so I could listen to it properly on CD the day it came out. I'm a bit old fashioned like that, but that's just my opinion.

Its a great way to be mate, i brought the vinyl on Monday for 17 quid!!
Depends on the wait, the song and the artist really. I was happy to wait until "Need U", "Waiting All Night" and "So Good To Me" came out because I wanted them to do well. I try and buy music when I can, only downloading from online when it's an 'older' song I missed out on or it's from an artist I don't necessarily feel the need to invest in.

I wait until the track is available properly, would never download it illegally or bother pre-ordering it.

Broken record alert. Besides, something like that is subjective anyway and that release strategy would not work for every act/release.

I often obtain tracks for free unless I buy the album (which I often do), want to support the act in question or if I just can't find a decent quality version for free. :P

LOL you always give off to me about my release views :P

But yeah i understand why some songs have to be held back but the last 18 months have shown the increasing irrelevance of the technique for many artists, it has actually become a hinderance imo. But i do understand how frustrated fans can be at the wrong release where reaching as high a chart placing as possible is very important.

I only think the strategy works for acts who are previously unknown and grow gradually with their one release (like The 1975), acts who are huge enough to hit the ground running with that strategy (like Rihanna) or releases from unknown acts who have pent up demand (like Icona Pop, who could do great if they released it in the next week or two).
