 Robbie sings Better Man  Yay!

It'll be great to hear some songs live that I haven't heard him sing before whilst attending one of his concerts.

I guess it's going to be difficult to avoid reading about the set list. I imagined it would be pretty similar to the set list he done at

the O2.

Wearing sparkling black tails teamed with baggy suit trousers, the Take That star performed beneath a giant mould of his face

Zip-wiring along Manchester’s Ethiad stadium lit up by flares, Robbie Williams promised to Entertain Me.

And for two glorious hours, he did.

The singer kicked off the English leg of his UK arena tour last night in spectacular style, showing absolutely no trace of the nerves which once plagued him.

Devoid of his four famous sidekicks - Take That - The Robster didn’t disappoint.

Following on from his (very) able assistant, support act Olly Murs - (whose set, including a brilliant Earth, Wind & Fire medley deserves far more than this one paragraph mention) he arrived on stage, and on time, at precisely 9pm.

Are you reading, Justin Bieber and Rihanna?

Wearing sparkling black tails teamed with baggy suit trousers, the 39-year-old performed beneath a giant mould of his face.

During Kids - a duet with Olly - out came another 30 foot tall mould, this time silver.

Sin, Sin, Sin saw an even bigger bronze version wheeled out on stage. Mid-Come Undone, this particular face spat out repeated streams of white mist over the crowd.

Anyway, you get the idea: Robbie isn’t shy. Or modest. And this is precisely why he is able delivers such a showman’s performance.

The 55,000 strong crowd were on their feet throughout which, given the average age of most, was quite an achievement.

Forget teenyboppers, these days Rob’s staunch fans are in their 30s and 40s. Most appeared to be harried mums on a rare night out.

I even spotted a few hen dos; One Direction can probably breathe easy.

On the subject of boybands, the singer paid tribute to his mates with a rendition of Everything Changes. With a twist.

Grabbing a fan on stage - in this instance, mohicanned Julie from Morecambe - he serenaded her before dragging her onto a makeshift double bed.

Arguably it was the moment of the night.

An acoustic section mid-23 song set was well received, and proved Robbie’s not just a pretty face. The boy from Stoke can sing.

With nine more UK dates still to go, plus 15 European gigs, Robbie promises a fresh show every time.

Given his ad-libbing - “Oi! That woman in the white t-shirt at the back going to the toilet, wave your arms in the air! I can see you!” - I believe him.

The star ended the evening with She’s The One and the song which truly launched his solo career, Angels.

It’s official: Robbie’s back. For good.

Robbie Williams gives Scottish fans taster for Hampden spectacular as he kicks off UK arena tour in typical showman style

20 Jun 2013 09:17

ROBBIE is set to play two gigs at Hampden Park in Glasgow next week and insists he can't wait to perform for his Scottish fans.

ZIP-WIRING along Manchester’s Etihad stadium lit up by flares, Robbie Williams promised to entertain us.

And for two glorious hours, he did.

The singer kicked off the his UK arena tour last night in spectacular style, showing no trace of the nerves which once plagued him and showing fans in Scotland what they can expect next week.

Robbie plays two gigs at Hampden Park in Glasgow on Tuesday and Wednesday and after this showing, he doesn’t disappoint.

Following on from his (very) able assistant, support act Olly Murs, whose set included a brilliant Earth, Wind & Fire medley, he arrived on stage on time at 9pm.

Justin Bieber and Rihanna take note.

Wearing sparkling black tails teamed with baggy suit trousers, the 39-year-old performed beneath a giant mould of his face.

An acoustic section during the 23-song set was well received and proved the singer is not just a pretty face.

Fans with tickets for the Hampden gigs will doubtless be counting the days.

And the man himself plans to warm up for the gigs by running laps of the famous football field before the audience floods in.

In an interview with Boogie for In:Demand Scotland, Robbie said: “I run around the pitch five times before I do some interviews and have a massage.”

Robbie said he can’t wait to perform for his Scottish fans.

He added: “Scotland is one of those places you treasure going to because you know you have already won.

“They are there for the craic, the beer and to sing at the top of their voices. They are less inhibited. Basically, you are mad.”

Robbie will be playing for 45,000 fans each night at Hampden. But he revealed he would love to play some smaller “sweaty” gigs in Scotland following his appearances at Glasgow’s Barrowland last year.

He added: “I would like to go back to do that again. Me and 2000 of my friends.”

In Manchester last night, he ended the show with She’s The One and Angels.

It’s official: Robbie’s back. For good.

The one's I know of...

Jups is going to Hampden concert next week

Tess is going to Wembley as I am next week

Nicky is going to the Amsterdam one

ICR went last night

Nada is going to.......... Switzerland I think?

Jasna ...... ,Zagreb, Croatia

Twinkle is going.......... not sure which one

Scotty has no doubt been to the Dublin one

It's a shame Robbie has never played anywhere in America, he has fans there too that would love to see him live.

I'd be interested in going just to watch the ladies swoon at Throbbie, er, Robbie's prancing about the stage....your last statement is true of not only Robbie, but, other artists/groups as well...

Nada is going to.......... Switzerland I think?

Not that far actually.

Austria, Vienna for me. B-)

I think I'll write a review when I get back. This was the forum where Robbie's love was growing for me and I feel it'd be right.

Though, don't trow something on me, but I will say it honestly... I think he's more showman than singer on this tour, based on a things I've seen so far (which is quite a lot). It's like he's doing Progress tour all over again on his own... That doesn't seem anywhere close to his previous great tours. And it's like he's not even trying to sing Angels properly. He is always missing 3 seconds in chorus. Not to mention quite shitty setlist, which doesn't even include Karma Killer or No Regrets (oh sorry, now you love them all, right?). Luckily there's Gospel. Also, Better Man is a nice surprise, but it could be performed better. He is really missing few classics on his setlist: Radio, Tripping, Different... I mean: Minnie the Moocher, are you f*king kidding me? :puke2: Everything Changes - seriously? Me and My Monkey - could have put two way better song instead that "story".

Okay, I'll stop now, but I could go on... I kinda wrote a review already... Should write that on official site, so that he can see. -_-

Went to see Robbie in Dublin last Friday Night, my mate got free tickets, while i like some of his songs i would never pay out money to see him. He put on a great show and to my delight he performed one of my faves Sin Sin Sin. Overall i thought it was a great show, he entertained the crowd, gave a nice mention to Take That and sang a bit of everything changes, the set was quiet impressive too as was his duet for kids with Olly Murs who also done a great support act.

To my surprise, the aviva stadium had a lot of empty seats and plenty of space in the standing area, the press have reported he performed to a packed crowd this was not the case as at the very very best it was 3 quarters full which surprised me.

 Well....... I won't throw anything at you :P

I have to admit I didn't even know what song Minnie The Moocher was until I searched for it on youtube, recognised it straight away then, and yeah my reaction is pretty much the same as yours......wtf! I reckon it'll be on his next swing album.

I'll post more opinion once I've seen him next week, regardless of what setlist he does, he will put on a great show as always.

Good to hear that you enjoyed the concert. I heard that there was a lot of space free at the front of the stage, that's a real shame. High ticket prices could be a reason, especially in the golden circle section. It's a pity people behind that line were not allowed to move forward a bit to fill the space.

Wembley tickets were still available a while back, will be interesting to see how full the stadium is on those nights.

Oh, me and my spelling. :drama: Saw it now.

I'm sure for a great show, but I'm afraid what the concert will be like? :( That's what I was talking about. I will fulfill one of my life dreams by seeing him live for the first time, but I think I'm exactly 7 years late to the party. Not to say 10. :( I still like the album, so his current work, but I think he must sing better old songs. Which is interesting, he is trying so much more when it comes to the new ones.

Also, there isn't any available tickets for Austria. I'm wondering how full the place is going to be then...

Everybody have fun at their concerts! :cheer:

I would have liked a different set list as well , I do like the acoustic section

I think this might be Robbie's last solo STADIUM tour though, from now on I think it might be Arenas, etc ... I prefer those venues actually, feels much more personal ( as if Robbie would sing just to me  )

The standing area was totally sold out - in fact standing area 1 sold out the morning tickets went on sale. The problem was they had a barrier up to separate the two sections and had it quite far back to allow for plenty of room which resulted in it looking as thought it wasn't sold out. They should have just moved the barrier further up. The seats were not sold out which I am not surprised as considering a large amount of them were €100-130 which is ridiculous in a recession. The promoters MCD claimed before the gig that they had sold over 50,000 tickets and they considered that a sell out. Staff at the Aviva were informed there were in fact 47,000 in attendance. Either way it is likely the second highest attended concert at the Aviva since it opened. Last year both Lady Gaga and Madonna only sold 37,000 and 33,000 respectively. Neil Diamond held the record for over 50,000 however that gig was a disaster with only half the amount of tickets being sold in the weeks leading up to the event. MCD spend an absolute fortune on radio and tv adverts and a huge amount of tickets were given away in comps. When Bon Jovi's ticket sales for Slane were the worst in history last weekend it was described as “the curse of Neil Diamond” by the Irish Times due the the amount spend on adverts. Robbie's gig was one of the few successful stadium gigs in recent years. Had it been announced with the rest of the tour before Christmas I am sure it would've sold even better. It was announced very late and by that stage loads of Irish fans had assumed there would be no gig so had most likely booked tickets to one of the UK shows. It was a silly move by MCD but considering the prices it is amazing that it sold so well. Most shows here are selling very poorly apart from Bruce Springsteen. Bon Jovi only sold over half of the amount of tickets available and Neil Young sold 18,000 out of 38,000 for the RDS the same weekend.

I'll do a proper review of the gig during the week but in short it was a brilliant night. Had really good seats on the lower tier so unlike last time could actually see what was going on. The way he held the crowd in the palm of his hand for 2 hours was classic Robbie. The production of certainly the biggest he's ever had - no real need for it was unlike most pop stars he is the show and his best gigs like Slane had no special effects or big production. It was still pretty cool though. The setlist was interesting. I was glad he still opened with LMEY after ditching it for Radio on the last year 7 years ago. It is by far the best opener for a gig and as usual got everyone bouncing. Would've liked a few more new songs - 'Into The Silence' would have been excellent but it was never going to happen I suppose. Was surprised he didn't sing 'Different' seeing as it was the second single. Not Like The Others in particular was a great stadium tune.

As far as the older tunes go - I was disappointed he left off 'Karma Killer' and 'Lazy Days' as he had sung them on the small tour and the O2 gigs. Mandalay and/or Eternity would've gone down well too but why didn't he do Supreme? It's one of his all time great hits and it's fantastic live. I was amazed he brought 'Strong' back yet left Supreme off seeing as he's always disliked Strong. The bit with the bed was amazing though I'lll admit :P Me and My Monkey was a brilliant surprise. Not a track I play very often but the performance reminded me what a cracking tune it is. To see Rob with the mic around his head acting out the whole song was really good. I don't think I've seen him use one of those mics before. Worked really well for Monkey and for the acoustic section which was one of my favourites. Millenium sounded a bit odd but Better Man was amazing. There were a few surprises though - Sexed Up being one considering he didn't even sing it for the Escapology tour - and Sin Sin Sin, IC's lowest charting single. I would've preferred 'Tripping' myself but SSS is good live.

It was a fantastic gig and he was in great form. Easily the most relaxed I've seen him perform. I am sure you will love it Nada, even if the setlist isn't pefect (although you can blame him reading the OS forum for including Me and My Monkey as he said he sung it because so many fans requested it  ). It was easily superior to the show I was at the Close Encounters tour. He was a nervous wreck on that tour and it effected his voice and performance. He actually appears to be enjoying himself this time which is great. The encore is predictable but works very well. Closing with 'Losers' on the small tour and O2 shows didn't work. 'Angels' is tradition. The crowd singing it back to him as he walked off was epic.

The Sun said in the review that he has sold over 900,000 for the UK alone on this tour which would surely make it the biggest of all time for a solo artist? I know it was going to be the biggest since MJ's Bad Tour. Can't remember the exact figures right now though. I am sure Wembley will be jammed packed. I think it was only the last night that tickets were still be advertised for. 4 night at Wembley is incredible though. I can't think of any solo act that could do that these days.

I shall read all your reviews after next Tues. At the moment I'm avoiding all comments on the tour.

^_^

Thanks for the review Scotty, I question the set-list as well , would have loved to have Karma Killer & Lazy Days in there as well, I have no idea how they select the songs.

I agree with what you saying about the late announcement for the Dublin gig, at that stage I did not think Robbie was coming to Dublin so had booked my ticket for Wembley , I am sure other people had done the same
