December 21, 201311 yr I love both parts equally. I personally see nothing wrong with trying to be more commerical, otherwise she risks slipping into obscurity more quickly. The second era is always an obstacle for an artist to get over to build a long term career and she's played it perfectly with the critically lauded Halcyon and then the more chart friendly repackage. If releasing Ryan Tedder songs and Children In Need singles means that she gets to spend more time in the limelight, then I'm all for it. I'm sure she'll still include the more leftfield stuff on her albums, Mirror from the Catching Fire soundtrack certainly is. Florence went the same way by suddenly getting #1 smashes with dance records. It definitely compromises their credibility but it seems as if Ellie's got past the 'cool and quirky' stage of her career and is embracing being a proper pop star. Then again, Bright Lights was a very similar campaign, adding a load of pop tracks and an Elton John cover for a John Lewis ad, and that was three years earlier into her career.
December 21, 201311 yr Author I understand the benefits of being more commercial for a time, but the music is dirge and that is a bigger priority for me. Also becoming a 100% commercial star just makes Radio 1 more likely to drop her when she goes back to her natural chart behavior of getting one hit for every two flops, but who knows when that'll be.

The public seem to be lapping up popstar Ellie at the moment so it's hard to see her releasing a single like Guns & Horses/Figure 8 again any time soon. I don't rank Burn up there with her best at all but I do have a huge soft spot for How Long Will I Love You and I like the majority of the tracks from Halcyon Days, although preferred those on Bright Lights a little more. I'd hazard a guess at the next album (pre-re-release) being sort of like a Rihanna album with the usual more creative and leftfield stuff, but two or three huge pop songs to use as singles. And those will probably be more in the vein of her current two hits than Anything Can Happen, which is actually pretty quirky in itself for a decent selling top five hit. The danger there is that pure pop fans will buy the album expecting an album full of the same, her original fans will avoid the album due to the poppy singles and nobody will win. Which is why her current strategy of creative original/commercial repackage is actually pretty genius in my eyes. Maybe she'll even try it out again? But I still think she'll lead the third era with a BIG pop song.
December 21, 201311 yr Author I would be fine with the commercial re-release strategy if she hadn't done it as she had this time. Bright Lights was fantastic in my opinion, it was poppy yes but at the same time was not at all generic. 'Burn' could be sang by anyone, and that's without even taking into account the fact that she didn't write it.
December 23, 201311 yr I'm ok with Ellie doing more commercial music as long as it's good. Halcyon Days is clearly not.
December 27, 201311 yr i love Halcyon Days! Goodness Gracious, You My Everything and Burn are amazing! HLWILY pulls at the heartstrings!
December 30, 201311 yr I have a feeling Ellie is going to be pretty massive this era and deservedly so! I think she could even do a mini-Adele and have worldwide success, obviously on a smaller scale of course. Really looking forward to this album though! :cheer: I posted the quote above back in August last year before Halcyon was released, and I think my prediction has turned out to be correct! :cheer: This album has now sold over 600,000 and 'Burn' has been Ellie's most successful single worldwide so far. There is still a chance for the album to sell quite a lot more too! :D

I hate the rerelease a lot but at least she's avoided the sophomore curse. Imagine what she would have sold without days. Think she would have sold 300-400k
December 31, 201311 yr Unsurprisingly, the trainwreck that is 'Goodness Gracious' is the next single. Another song that Ellie did write (bleurgh). Having said that, the music video trailer looks alright. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=101517...e=2&theater
July 20, 201410 yr Was watching her digital signing for Halcyon, Bless her! It was painful to watch but I can see her trying so hard to stop the awkward silence
