July 27, 201312 yr Trip Hop, Chillout, Ambient, are all subgenres of "dance" aka "electronica". Some arent really trip hop but have some elements of it, so I guess they are borderline dance. However, some choices are baffling, like "American Pie" or "Call My Name". Those are clearly pop.
July 27, 201312 yr Since when has electronica also been known an dance? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronica If it's not made for club dancing then I dont think it should be termed dance music but that's my opinion.
July 27, 201312 yr in America they dont say dance, they say "EDM" for all genres of dance music (many incorrectly use "techno", but that is thankfully changing). Dance music for them can be rap songs, pop songs, anything uptempo. Dance music in europe is used for any types of electronic music, always has been, and not just those made for clubs... like chillout.
July 27, 201312 yr You're right, I meant EDM but in the 90s it was more "electronica" they used over in the US, I guess the meanings have diverged somewhat over there. I'd stick with EDM if I was in the US, and Electronica in UK. They are better than "dance music" which tbh can be really miscategorized.
July 27, 201312 yr Author However, some choices are baffling, like "American Pie" or "Call My Name". Those are clearly pop. American Pie was produced by William Orbit, while Call My Name is a Calvin Harris track, so I'd say that both are dance-pop and contained within the Dance/EDM spectrum.

July 27, 201312 yr Author Then where are All Saints' "Pure Shores" & "Black Coffee"? :P True. I must admit I was in two minds about Pure Shores... Dream-pop seems to be the most popular genre tag for it, but you could say it has elements of ambient/electronica/trip-hop too. Black Coffee only sold 60k :P. 199,084 [1] All Saints Pure Shores [26/02/2000] 155,000 [1] All Saints Pure Shores [04/03/2000] Edited July 27, 201312 yr by ►ej
July 27, 201312 yr I think just because it was produced by an electronic music producer doesn't mean the song is "dance". Just like pop artists or hip hop artists are perfectly capable of doing dance music: look at Dannii Minogue's "Perfection" or P Diddy's "Let's Get Ill". I think its better to judge each song individually rather than the artist or producer behind the song.

July 28, 201312 yr I'm sure the only reason people don't think 'Fairground' is a dance track is because it's by Simply Red, and people associate that name with 'Holding Back The Years' and stuff. If it was credited to Freetimers Featuring Mick Hucknall nobody would have questioned it.
