has there ever been such a huge religion founded upon nothing?

lets get this straight..... 'eve' sinned, so because of some fabled being we are all sinners by birth, and the only way to have our sins forgiven is to accept another nebulous character as our personal saviour.....

what sort of loving, compassionate 'god' allowed that to happen?

sorry but as a parent i would do everything possible to stop my kids harming themselves, whether they believed in me or not! (i would hide either, like god does). and if their mother sinned, i wouldnt blame all of her offspring forever into eternity! especially if i had the power not to let 'sin' exist in the first place!

oh but all is ok.... for he sent his only son (why????) to die for us.... well for saying it was god that allowed the existence of sin in the first place, i think thats fair enough....pmsl.

how come that the jews, who had been predicting a 'saviour' for years, didnt even recognise this character? maybe because in contemporary times 'jesus' was nothing more then yet another 'prophet' type rebel leader of which there were hundreds.

'good news'.... the message of salvation, the crux of the whole christian doctrine, is not headline news like you would expect, but is only described once, out of all the writings concerning christ, one line, john 3:16. dont you think it would be much more prominent?....

the bible..... well thats is so nebulous that it is open to so many interpretations that the whole family of christian beliefs make it a total shambles!.... look.... assuming 'god' created the natural world, just look at how exact things are, the precision, the balance, over a million species all cohabiting on this cleverly created planet, with all its soil types, habitats, weather systems, ocean currents, all producing this vastly varied life on earth...... then look at the bible (which is only a convenient collection of writings out of THOUSANDS on the subject, the writings chosen were chosen to prove their point ... fair innit! <_< ) creation/the bible.... 2 completely different authors!

belief.... an emotion based upon hope. everyone with any type of spiritual conviction 'knows' they are right, because they feel it to be so..... so did them suicide bombers too... which illustrates the danger of an emotional decision.

Christianity is the world biggest ever con, based upon people wielding power, power to control.

It's SCARY, isn't it??

I grew up an Irish Catholic and blah blah blah never much believed in it but still went to church every sunday as a kid, etc. Always seemed normal to me. Then I went a couple years ago and realized something...

I'm sitting with a bunch of people staring at a giant statue of a naked man bleeding and dying on a wooden cross, only to get up and eat something that is apparently HUMAN FLESH AND BLOOD. What the **** is that!!! To any nonbeliever this must look like bizarre and violent cult!!

My issue is that I think all of the world's major religions are a sham. Even the super reformist ones or the religions like Baha'i that just combine all the religions into one easy-to-swallow faith. Religion just causes wars and impedes science and human development. Humans need to evolve out of it, but I’m afraid humanity will wipe itself off the planet before that happens (in the name of religion no doubt)

Hear hear! But I have noticed something - humans always worship. First, it was the gods, then it was fame (the observation and judgement of others). It's quite strange, there is always something that man regards as higher than himself. I've realised why - humans desire judgement. Without that desire, the cohesion of groups is impossible, and so is civilisation, according to their thought - there must always be something higher, which may also explain why Communism never seems to perfectly work - there must always be something higher. Humans created civilization not because of willingness but of a need to be assimilated into higher orders of structure and meaning - the church was one way of doing this, democracy is almost a modern version. Another reason why religion, that old outdated concept, should just be abolished, if only to stop all these pointless wars, but mainly because if there is something with more power, they should be listened to - not worshipped or followed like a fanatic, but obeyed. Maybe then the world would achieve something instead of constantly hearing about the modern problems in the world.

exactly :)

why we should lumber ourselves with medieval emotion just because we need an answer that everything is gonna be ok when we die... is bollox!

IF there is a 'god' like entity, it certainly isnt accurately portrayed in any orthadox religion.

Exactly! Screw Job and all that - the worst is fu©king Fred Phelps - check him on wikipedia - he says terrorist attacks and tragedies are God's way of punishing the earth for homosexuals. He's such a tw@t, claims anyone who doesn't publicly criticise homosexuals and condemn them to hell will go there with them, and he takes the Bible completely literally.

You missed out the HUGE discrepancy in the Bible - absolutely NO mention of the Dinosaurs....If Man was created supposedly 'In God's Image', in who's image were the Dinosaurs created.....? Why were they on Earth millions of years BEFORE humans, why did they become extinct..? Did 'God' make a mistake...? Surely not.....

Or could it be that the reason why there is no mention of the Dinosaurs in the Bible is because man never even knew of their existence until hundreds of years after this work of fiction was written.....?

Absolutely correct, the whole idea is flawed... Jesus was more than likely just a Prophet/Anti-Roman sh!t-stirrer, no more the 'son of God' than I am. Which makes it all the more likely that he in fact did get married and have kids, as per the theory put across in "Holy Blood and Holy Grail", which certainly makes a damn sight more sense than listening to some gobsh!te preacher going on about Jesus's "divinity"....

EXCUSE ME. your trying to that just christianity is nothing? that other religions like islam dont have similar beliefs? or mean nothing to you?

firstly your nothing but a complete arse-licker, knowing that many christian people, or ''non-religious'' people on this board are white or black.

and secondly, you have no right to come posting messages like that. there is definately christians on this board, not matter how many, who would never think of coming to this forum to say ''life without religion is a joke''.

i have no problem, and neither would anybody else, with general discussion on christianity and you giving a view that you dont believe in it because of so and so.

Wow, heavy stuff, think i will go and watch my movie namesake "The life of Brian" again to give myself a laugh. Amen.

OK, firstly, your black/white statement is laughable seeing as they make up the basic majority of the world's population, so it's not all that hard for the majority to be black/white on this board. And anyway, this comment is based on Christianity - what did you expect from the title? You don't have to criticise all the major religions in one statement you know - you'll probably be p!ssing off a fair few people as it is with one religion, so adding more just makes it look like you're trying to stir up sh!t. And when you look at the arguments he presents, and the lack of arguments many Christians offer (usually of the 'you can't prove God DOESN'T exist though' variety) you have to realise he has every right to offer his viewpoints on the religion. Everyone has the right to offer a viewpoint on a religion. They may not like it, but their complaint lies with the person who said that and they can take it up with them.

There is no proof God exsists. I just can't believe there's something up there controlling it all. It's just so unbelievable imo.

I believe in the dinosaurs and man evolving....

'trying' to say that christianity is nothing? i thought id made it perfectly clear that it is nothing!

yep,all religions are the same, based upon a given peoples inadiquacy to deal with death, needing 'something else'. religion is nothing more then a comfort zone for them.

answer me this...... which religion is right? they all claim to be right and the others are blasphemy.. surely the fact that there are so many different religions, and sub sects within religions (especially christianity), is proof itself that none of them have a fekkin clue! if there was 'the truth' then it would be seen by all as a singular truth. no one argues that the sun is a bright hot thing in the sky... that is a universal truth. if god can do that, then wtf cant he get his message across clearly?... because its bollox!

"firstly your nothing but a complete arse-licker, knowing that many christian people, or ''non-religious'' people on this board are white or black." .... eh?... this sentance doesnt make any sense.

and why is that? as the co-mod of this forum it is my job to post threads that are deep and thought provoking, which is exactly what ive done on this forum which was created for such topics.

if christians come on here saying that then as long as it is done in a reasonable manner, aimed at stimulating conversation, then there will be no problem. otherwise if its just religious spam, i or my co-mod will delete them! :P

I believe in the dinosaurs and man evolving....

Many Christians dont believe that the world is only 10,000 years old....  Seriously!! I aint kidding. That presumably means they dont believe in dinosaurs or evolution (or in the ancient, now extinct, North American and African indigenous cultures which go back further than 10,000 years either presumably...) Despite all the evidence backing up dinosaurs and evolution and the complete LACK of evidence backing up the existence of any kind of God... And they want to teach this poisonous, scientifically baseless "Creationist" rubbish to impressionable children in schools. Talk about brainwashing...

 omg lol.

In science we had this chart with dinosaurs, sharks etc... and how long they've been around. There's proof! What do Christians think fossils are then? lol

At least in my school they just teach you about the religions, don't actually encourage you to believe in it.

Religion is always a tough subject, because it deals with some inner feelings of the human being. I think this thread is a good oportunity for debate, but each side should keep the respect after all.

The thing we know is, 2k years ago something happened on the Middle East and that has been the most discussed happening of the history. One would thought that after 2 thousand years the dust would settle, but when you read the listings of the best selling books, the sucess of Da Vinci Code movie and book, and the fact that there´s still millions of people who talk about it everyday, wether to criticize it or to support it, you come to the conclusion whoever started this stuff must have done something really right.

I was born and raised a Catholic, even tough I detest the Catholic church and the way they deal with religion. Only a few years ago I started to really know more about the christian religion, but outside the Catholic Church, because what you do in the CC is basically worship statues and practice superstitious rituals, and you end up learning NOTHING about the message of Jesus Christ.

I cannot prove the He existed, or he ressurected, but whatever, I am sure that if people actually tried to follow his teachments, the world would be a MUCH better place. And I am not talking about the religious teachments and doctrines, but about the christian way of treating other human beings. I understed that people today are so angry about christianism and the catholic church. Somehow, trough these 2,000 years Jesus name was basically used to create wars and prejudice, and it still happens today, but if you go to the source of it (the gospels), you´ll notice that none of these behaviours belong to Jesus´s teachments, so basically it is not HIS fault, but the fault of people who used his name.

About the Garden of Eden, Adam & Eve, Noah´s Ark and stuff... I don´t buy these stories. I think with the current state of science it would be stupidity. But so do many of the christians today... Everyone knows that life evolves and the world exists since much more then 10,000 years. But if this is hard to explain to many of today´s people, then imagine people who lived 2 or 3 thousand years ago, and probably barely knew how to read. Basically, this was a metaphorical way religion created to teach simple people that the universe we live in is the creationg of an intelligent mind.

I also don´t buy the though of some so-called christians who say everyone who does not have a religion or who has a different religion is going all the way to hell... Or even worse then that, people who think we should kill or destroy any other type of spirituallity that is not christian. But then again, Jesus has never encouraged that (if we can take the words on the gospels as coming from himself), and always teached the contrary. Again, it´s just people who misunderstood the whole thing or are trying to manipulate the masses using religion. Do you really think that George Bush, laying at his bed at night, prays to the God whose name he uses on his speeches all the time? Or do you really believe Bin Laden is someone who really loves his God? There is a huge difference between what people say and what people really feel on the inside.

whilst id agree that if everyone followed 'christs' teachings the world would be a better place, they arnt 'his'!

there were well ordered civilisations throughout the world that had basic 'good' in their laws, the bible makes it sound like all these 'good' things are from christ, but it just isnt so.

somethings been going on in the middle east ever since time began, strange isnt it that christianity took 40 years to take off! thats 40 years AFTER he died!!!..

if he was everythig the bible claimed then why didnt christianity take off immediately? like i said, theres thousands of religious texts from that era, only the writings that fitted the criteria were used and all the others that contradicted, or didnt support the christian premis, dispite them being pertainent were ignored.

the whole thing is a con, and everyone can have an emotion about something, it doesnt make it the truth..
