- Bhangra is relevent to this discussion. All styles of music are, you can't just pick and choose

It's an ETHNIC music genre. As far as I know it hasn't reached the heights of rnb, pop, rock and other mainstream music genres which do NOT have anything to do with a specific country these days. And bhangra still does very much so. Just because rnb was created as a genre for African-American population a long time ago doesn't mean the situation stayed the same and will always be like that. It's this state of mind that scares me the most.

Anyway, it hardly even MATTERS which races or nationalities listen to which genres the most. People are being given these stereotypes and lessons from the past about who was supposed to and did listen to what before, and it creates this mental block. I don't know if it makes sense but I believe that focusing on all those sterotypes and generalising is what makes progress so slow. Everyone just listens to different music. But NO there are more and more studies to show how different races are. What do these stats even BRING to the world, other than more money for music record companies who will now know which market to target harder? Nothing but useless information that tears the world further apart.

(Not only applicable to music industry as well)

Rant ovah and I'm bored now so MOVING AWN.

Finally! Thank you! :D

I totally agree with you second paragraph. It isn't important. Although it is the reality, it should't matter.

I agree with your first paragraph as well. One of the studies I posted showed this actually. As styles of music became mainstream the demographics of their listeners became more spread out (e.g. I was looking at the hip hop section and the percentage of listeners that are white increases every decade since it hit the mainstream in the 1980s). So if bhangra ever gets more mainstream attention (which I hope it does), the same would probably happen.

Bhangra was a thing over here years ago but it hasn't really been relevant over here since like... 2004?
Something ridiculous like 3 hours with a lead that was something like the rest of the Top 10 combined.

That's what I was thinking yes. That's a serious/disastrous drop in popularity for Gaga, BTW was doing a hell of a lot better.

This is what I get on Kworb at the moment for the UK :

1 Ellie Goulding - Burn 1.0000

2 Avicii - Wake Me Up 0.6488

3 Lady Gaga - Applause 0.6165

Surely there is something wrong with the numbers?

It was released like 11 hours ago and it seems to stall already.

In the US it is even worse, she is only 0.5850% on ROAR and has been in dark red for the last 3 updates. This is mental, who would have thought that Katy Perry would slay Gaga so easily. Not to mention that Katy was released a few days ago already, which means she should be decreasing while Gaga has just been released so she should rocket to the top. Weird!

Yeah, it's kind of been sent back "underground", but I know a lot of people that still like it, and the biggest club in Birmingham has a whole room dedicated to it on a lot of nights, so I think it still has a strong following, at least where I live anyway.

Bhangra music, despite how it sounds, actually started out in the UK I think.

 11. Hold On, We're Going Home (feat. Majid Jordan) - Drake

 12. Blurred Lines (feat. T.I. & Pharrell) - Robin Thicke

could be down to #13 soon.

1 Ellie Goulding - Burn 1.0000

2 Avicii - Wake Me Up 0.6488

3 Lady Gaga - Applause 0.6165

Born This Way was #1 by miles at this point  This is such a flop by her standards, it won't be her 5th #1.

 I've never heard anything so ridiculous! Bhangra music is native to the Punjab in India, that's where it started out, long before any Indian people emigrated to the UK.

And on the topic of Gaga, I'm pretty shocked as to how badly Applause is doing compared to expectations, she should easily have been #1 by now!

I don't know. I wasn't there when it started out. But I'd definitely say it's centered in the UK today.

EDIT: Yeah, I think I know what you mean.

Bhangra originated as a dance form way before: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhangra_(dance)

Whilst it became a genre of music in the 1980s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhangra_(music)

I don't really to know, just I've heard people say it started out in the UK.

I would have thought studies into the various races which investigate the differences would promote more understanding, not less.

Looking at the pop bars Katy Perry is slaying Gaga worldwide. Only a few markets where Gaga in number1. Generally she around 3-4.

Her plan to release and compete with Katy has backfired

To be fair to her, Lady Gaga has released later, so it would be fairer to compare after she gets the full 48(?) hours.

Gaga's holding up well so far! :cheer: She should start rising again soon, it stalling now would be so baffling!!

And Eric Blob needs professional help after the bunch of totaal crap I have had to endure from his mindless posts in this thread???? Most of Gaga's fans are gay? Poker Face went #1 because of the hermaphrodite rumours??v? We get it you HATE Gaga a lot but your posts about her became even more ridiculous and laughable by the minute!! Just give it up already

I never said Robin Thicke's fans were all black. I said most of them are. Apparently his audience is 90% African American females (although that could be different now after Blurred Lines ). Watch at 2:40

There's a male One Direction fan on this forum I think! I'm not stupid enough to think they have no male fans, but I'm sure most of their fans are female.

So if Robin Thicke's fanbase is 90% African American women like ur saying, then there must be millions of African American women around the world since his albums have been selling around Europe and the rest of the world for a decade now and a lot more since his last album Blurred lines, but I'm sure u didn't bother listening to it because if u did, u wouldn't be making these comments... His album is pop-soul-electrofunk which is a genre KNOWN to appeal equally to all races and demographics, and not just African American women.

I'm sorry. :( I'm going to try to not talk about her anymore. But yeah, I tend to have a Lady Gaga melt-down every 6-8 months, so put me on your ignore list to be safe.

Sorry, but can you watch that video I posted please. Robin Thicke HIMSELF says that, it's not a statistic I made up.

If this isn't a lag, she probably won't even get top 2 officially.

Well it's no.2 now but it sure is making heavy weather of it.

It's a long haul to no.1, if indeed it ever gets there, let alone no.1 overall come Sunday.

She never planned to compete with Katy? What crap?

Of course she did, you think this whole leak thing and pop emergency were coincidental?

The song didn't even leak in full....there was no need to rush it out.
