Here are the Top 10 artists in the order of weeks spent on the UK Singles chart.

1,301 Elvis Presley

1,175 Cliff Richard

850 Rihanna

770 The Shadows

735 Madonna

672 Elton John

670 Diana Ross

665 Michael Jackson

479 Kanye West

476 Rod Stewart

Totals are up to and including week ending 24th August 2013. Weeks only included where artists are specially named as a contributing artist on a hit. Therefore, Shadows hits with Cliff are included, but Michael Jackson hits with the Jackson 5 are not (unless it is listed as Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5). Likewise Diana Ross' total includes hits as Diana Ross & the Supremes, but not as the Supremes.

These sort of lists are minefields!

For what it's worth, I've got:

1299 Elvis

1175 Cliff

829 Rihanna

742 Shadows

736 Madonna

664 Michael Jackson

661 Elton John

559 Diana Ross

481 Kanye West

477 David Guetta

476 Rod Stewart

465 Beatles

464 Jay-Z

461 Kylie

453 Bowie

etc. etc. etc.

At least I agree with you re Cliff & Rod!

I'll go back over my data over the next 48 hours and see if I can spot where I'm light, particulary re Diana Ross.

In terms of Rihanna, I don't have her credited individually on "All of The Lights" or "Just Stand Up" but that would add 23 weeks and make her 852 rather than the 850 you have

Total of 829 weeks

Polyhex agrees with the number of weeks in all cases and I've checked the adding up and it comes to 829. Could you have missed out the first song for example when adding it up?

~for what it's worth~ I'll throw in the total I get for Rihanna's top 75 weeks as well (split into years (which don't necessarily match up to the OCC's years) because that's easier to do with the format of my spreadsheet).

2005 18wks

2006 40wks

2007 69wks

2008 132wks (includes 3wks for 'Just Stand Up!')

2009 45wks

2010-2013 528wks (don't need to count these because I keep these decade to date stats already - this doesn't include 20 weeks for 'All Of The Lights')

So that's 832 weeks, 829 if you don't count 'Just Stand Up!', 852 if you do count 'All Of The Lights'. (And 849 if you do count 'AOTL' but don't count 'JSU!')

In other words, I agree with fchd's total.

Like the website! Love these kind of lists. Many years ago when the now sadly defunct British Hit Singles used to be published annually, and it was under its original authors Paul Gambccini, Tim Rice & Johnathan Rice they used to print loads of lists and feats like these and the ones your blog, in the back of their book.

Thanks for your kind words about my blog - I'm definitely a lists man!

Thanks to everybody who responded to my list - with artists guesting on each other's tracks these days it is difficult to keep track. I have used the artists as listed in the Guinness Books up until end of 2005, and the artists as listed on the Official Charts Company website since then. For instance, on the OCC site, All Of The Lights credits Kanye West, Drake & Rihanna whereas Just Stand Up is credited to Artists Stand Up To Cancer. But I agree, it is difficult to get the exact figures right!!

Thanks for looking at my list - as I said I have included in Diana Ross' total, the tracks that are credited to Diana Ross & the Supremes, but not the Supremes only. Hope this helps.

The OCC credit for 'All Of The Lights' is strange considering Drake doesn't have a significant role on the song (I was going to say he's not on it at all but it appears he is, just as a backing vocalist).

I only credit Kanye on the song as per the album tracklisting which doesn't list any features. On the other hand I credit every artist separately on 'Just Stand Up!' because the actual single release doesn't use the term 'Artists Stand Up To Cancer' as far as I can tell.

Oops, just realised that I had included the pre 1967 Supremes tracks in her total!! I now have her as 569 weeks. Thanks for the tip!!

Yes, the featured artists are a minefield as has been stated on this post previously, I have stuck to the OCC listings as that was the only way I could think of to get the definitive answer. I didn't expect to start such a huge debate - Great, though!!

I've posted the curent "state of play" for artists in my system to a pdf file at

http://www.fchd.info/temp/ARTISTWEEKS.pdf

I've restricted it to those with 50 weeks or more to keep the size of the file manageable for now. Artists shown in red are in this week's Top 75.

I know there are still some issues with it - I've realised I haven't added all Marvin Gaye's duets to his total for instance. Other work is still ongoing (and probably always will be!) You may notice some minor differences to the Guetta & Minogue totals I posted earlier

fchd, you are a legend!! Thanks for posting this list, I am certainly going to double check my totals to yours, I am also checking back using the Guinness books up to 2005, and OCC from then. Once I am happy with my new totals, I will repost them.

Thanks again!!

I'd leave checking against mine for a week or two, I've still got some "featured" artists credits to allocate to the right place, for instance since I posted I've upped Dina Carroll's weeks by adding those supporting Quartz to her total, and taken a couple of weeks off David Guetta where I gave him a featured on the Egg's original version of Walking Away when he was only credited on the remake. I will be working on it between now and Saturday, then I've got lots of FA Cup results to add to the main part of the website which will take most of next week, then back to chart data the week after.

I'd still be interested in how you get your Rihanna total though.

Just manually started double checking my totals, and this is what I have so far.

1. Elvis 1,302 weeks

2. Cliff 1,176 weeks

3. Rihanna 849 weeks

4. Shadows 771 weeks

For Rihanna in 2010 I had 118 weeks instead of 117, so I have amended my total.
