ONE of the most talked-about pieces on the Atelier Versace catwalk on Sunday night was the crystal-adorned mesh hood shown with a white fluffy coat so, understandably, press and couture customers who visited the showroom in the subsequent days were keen to see it in the flesh - but they were disappointed. Lady Gaga was probably shining its sparkly baubles even as they spoke, since it was by then proudly ensconced in her much-talked-about wardrobe.

 

After borrowing it to wear to the post-show Versace dinner, which she attended as the special guest of Donatella, Lady Gaga asked (quite politely, we're sure), if she could retain the one-of-a kind item. And Versace allowed her to.

 

Although she is the brand's current campaign face, as well as a close friend of Donatella, Lady Gaga should feel privileged at the gift, since it is fairly unusual for a couture piece to be given away to a celebrity straight after the show. This is thanks not only to the fact that it is the only one in the world, but also because the craftsmanship involved in its creation mean it would have been excruciatingly expensive (not to mention time-consuming) to make.

 

And it seems Lady Gaga knew that only too well, since her tweet (and accompanying hashtag) following the dinner denoted just a hint of self-satisfaction.

As Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace posed together on the red carpet ahead of Versace’s Paris couture show this week, it felt as though we were gazing into Gaga’s future.

 

The peroxide pair have been growing closer over recent months, ever since Gaga was asked to front Versace’s SS14 ad campaign and then referenced her favourite designer on her new album, Artpop, with the song ‘Donatella’. But, these latest pictures suggest Lady Gaga is actually morphing into her fashion idol.

Houston shoe designer grabs the attention of Lady Gaga, photographers and designers worldwide

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- They say, "Choose a job you

love and you will never have to work a day in your

life." One Houstonian is a living testament it's

possible.

Omar Perez grew up around the handy work of

his parents.

"My mother was an artist," he said.

For 10 years, he worked in video design and

animation, but his passion for sculpture kept him

busy at his home-workshop.

"I would start out small, with frames and shelving

units," Perez said.

Then Perez started designing shoe sculptures.

"They pretty much started out as a joke, really,"

he said.

That joke turned into a lucrative business. He

made the shoes wearable for models, accenting

them with wild materials. Each pair sells for

between $2,500 and $6,000.

Each shoe sculpture is between 14 and 24

inches and take up to three weeks to make.

Remember the platforms Lady Gaga wore to

promote her "Artpop" album? Those were

custom-made by Perez right here in Houston.

"There she is, wearing my works," Perez said. "It

was really, really exciting."

The pop music icon has worn four pairs of Perez's

shoe sculptures. And before long, he was fielding

calls from photographers, stylists and designers

worldwide. Now a thriving artist, he's been

featured in international magazines, including

Vogue Italia.

"And that image is being circulated worldwide so

again, it's a great honor," Perez said.

Perez has custom-made more than 60 different

individual shoe sculptures and about 20 wearable

pairs. Perez says he wants to tackle movie next.

He'd like his shoes to be used as wardrobe on the

big screen.
