August 27, 200619 yr ARIA Chart Commentary from Gavin Ryan Justin Timberlake holds on to the top spot on the Australian singles chart for a second week, thus making it his longest running No.1 single. As "Rock Your Body" only stayed at the top of the charts for a single week, staying at the top with "Sexyback" was an easy feat to be his longest running solo No.1. Now I say solo, as he has been at the top of the charts longer, but as guest vocalist or lead vocalist in a group. I also noticed something else this week. Justin has now been at the top as a solo singer (Rock Your Body) in a duo (Sexyback features Timbaland as guest vocalist), as part of a trio (Signs) which was credited as Snoop Dogg feat Charlie Wilson and Justin Timberlake and also twice as part of a quintet (five people). N*Sync were a five piece, and he was guest vocalist with The Black Eyed Peas (they are four, he was one extra, making it five). So now all he needs to make it a straight flush is to be at No.1 as part of a quartet. Paul McCartney has claimed a similar feat, but not as many as Justin. He has had a solo No.1 (Another Day-1971), as part of a trio (Mull of Kintrye by Wings-1978) and as part of a quartet with The Beatles who had 26 No.1 singles. There are two big climbers on this weeks chart. Up from 8 to 2 is the former UK No.1 single that has made steady rises over the past five weeks of charting, and this week makes a jump up six places. Sandi Thom's "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (with Flowers in My Hair) comes close to matching it's homeland chart placing. Also a song that has been hovering in the 20's for the past 9 weeks moving 36-29-28-24-24-25-20-18-20-22-22-23-21 this week jumps up 9 places to No.12. I'm talking about "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" by Panic! at the Disco. With their follow-up single now being played at radio, and the album climbing to it's new highest peak of No.15 this week, people have started to wake up to this quirky Las Vegas band who recently took "Sins" to No.7 in the US. The highest new entry comes in at No.29 this week, and is something a departure-from-formula for this Canadian soft-rock band. Nickelback's "Animals" is a hard-rock song about wild sex, and is the fourth single from their current No.17 album "All the Right Reasons" which is spending it's 47th week on the charts. The previous three singles from the album were "Photograph" (No.3, Sept 2005), "Far Away" (No.2, Feb 2006) and "Savin' Me" (No.18, May 2006). Sitting at No.5 on this weeks ARIA Club Charts (and recently peaking at No.2 there) is "I Love You" by Sneaky Sound System, which this week climbs back into the Top 50 at No.36. When it originally charted several weeks ago, it reached No.25. Right behind SSS, is the second debut for the week at No.37, "All This Love" by Swedish duo The Similou. Joel Eriksson and Erik Niklasson formed the duo in 2003, and were influenced by 1980's pop rock like Hall & Oates, Van Halen and Earth, Wind and Fire. This song was originally released as a limited edition club track in 2003, but when they got signed to a local label, it became a club smash across Scandinavia. Since being signed to Sony (internationally) it has become a major international track. And lastly at No.39 is the fourth single from February's No.1 album for The Living End "State of Emergency". "Nothing Lasts Forever" follow up the previous three singles from that album which were "What's on Your Radio" (No.9, Nov 2005), "Wake Up" (No.5, Feb 2006) and "Long Live the Weekend" (No.23, May 2006). Debuting at No.1 this week is the third No.1 album for Australian Country/Pop artist Kasey Chambers. "Carnival" is the follow-up to the 2004 No.1 album "Wayward Angel" (5 weeks -June 2004), and that was preceded by the No.1 album "Barricades and Brickwalls" (2 weeks - February 2002). It's the first time that the word 'Carnival' has appeared in a No.1 album although we have had "Cargo" (Men at Work, May 1983) and "Caribou" (Elton John, August 1974) that have the words 'Car' at the start, but they ain't no Carnival. This is the second solo female artist to hit the top of the albums chart this year, following on from last weeks "Back to Basics" album (No.2 this week). The last time that a female No.1 debut knocked off a female No.1 debut was back in 2004 when Avril Lavigne's "Let Go" was knocked off by Kasey's last No.1 album "Wayward Angel". "Carnival" is the 530th No.1 album in Australia, the 119th Australian Performed No.1 album, 66th by a Solo Female Artist, and the 16th by a Australian Solo Female Artist. The last Oz Female to hit the top of the album charts was back in November 2004 when Delta Goodrem's second album "Mistaken Identity" was at the top for a single week. Also this week's Top 4 albums are all by female artists. I'll have to do a bit of research to find out the last time that happened. The next highest debut comes in at No.24, and is the much publicised debut album from Paris Hilton, entitled "Paris". The fact that it came with a bonus DVD, but only managed at No.24 entry proves that you can't over push and album if people don't want to buy it. Right behind Paris at No.25 is the first Top 50 chart entry for Lamb of God, "Sacrament", whilst at No.27 is the new album from Outkast, "Idlewild". This is the follow-up to their Top 10 album "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" from November 2003, which stayed in the Top 50 for just under 40 weeks.
