November 13, 201311 yr Children in Need Rocks, Hammersmith Apollo, review Not even irritating presenters Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton could dampen the spirits on a night when Gary Barlow and Robbie Williams shined, says Hugh Morris stars 4/5 By Hugh Morris12:55PM GMT 13 Nov 2013 The rock arm of Children in Need was born in 2009 with a show at the Royal Albert Hall. It has since yielded a concert in Manchester in 2011, before arriving at its current format: a dozen acts across two nights at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. Founded by Gary Barlow, he is the event’s backbone, never more so than this year as he headlines both gigs. Before Barlow put in the hard yards, however, the crowd, which had paid £75 per ticket and was ready to recoup the equivalent value in frenzied screaming, was treated to a host of A-list stars. Kings of Leon, the closest thing to a rock band on the bill, opened the night, delivering their blend of child-friendly sing alongs, before lacklustre X Factor winners Little Mix did the same. It was a shame that an imminent BBC television screening seemed to take precedence over the night’s live music, with hosts Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton repeatedly performing links for Thursday’s coverage of the two nights. It bordered on farcical as the pair kept introducing acts who had just performed or were not scheduled at all: “And next up we have One Direction,” beamed Evans. The crowd roared – but this was the wrong night for the boy band messiahs. It takes more than irrelevant presenter noise to dampen the spirits of a charity evening, however. The mere sight of Robbie Williams almost brought the Hammersmith Apollo to its knees, before Dizzee Rascal matched the crowd for enthusiasm, bouncing around in delirium to his hit, Bonkers. Barlow and Williams joined Barry Manilow on stage for Could It Be Magic – say what you will about variety shows but few gigs have the clout to pull off something like that – before Barlow banged out Shine and Rule the World with 100 times the charisma he’s mocked for lacking as a judge on The X Factor. After a brief cameo from Terry Wogan and a Barlow duet with special guest, ABBA’s Agnetha Faltskog, the evening ended in confusion, which showcased the friction between live shows and TV material. Another special guest, Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra, concluded the concert with Mr Blue Sky only for Chris Evans to enthusiastically call for more. A few sheepish looks later and the band launched into Mr Blue Sky – again. Clearly, an encore was not on Lynne's schedule, but nobody in the audience cared. Telegraph.co.uk
