They are doing so well.

So far this season they have beaten Blackburn 3-0, drawn 0-0 with Man City and are now beating Middlesbrough 3-0 as well.

Are they in contention for Europe this year?

It was 4-0 to Portsmouth in the end. Puts them second.
They really aren't as good as they could be. They had an ENDLESS budget this pre-season and yet they bolster their squad with Sol Campbell and David James. Don't get me wrong they're good signing but they could've done so much better. They should've got Martins for a start.
Their the poor man's Chelsea and Cassidy is right; they could have bought a lot better players but they didn't. -_- IMO Martins isn't as good as some people make him out to be but he's a useful striker and better than what they have ATM.
They've tried though but people obviously see them as a club not big enough. They have bought well though, especially for the money they paid.

Just because they have money doesn't mean they should just spend it -_- and as Mark said not all players are going to go to them ;) Look at Wigan for example they have lots of money and last season they couldn't attract some players they wanted because everyone thought they'd get relegated! Harry Redknapp knows what he's doing and he knows not many big players would want to go to Portsmouth and he doesn't want to upset morale by suddenly signing loads of big stars just because he has a lot of money to spend.

They've made the right signings for the TEAM anyway.. and I think they'll definitely be in the top half this season at least.
