Well, in this rather obscure top 5, I suppose a little commercial presence won't do anyone any harm. Daft Punk have always been an act I've loved and some of their songs rank as my all time favourites, I never thought they'd ever find massive commercial success again, but as soon as I heard this, I knew that this could go on to be different. And what a success it was! I'd go as far to say its not my favourite from them despite the fact in years to come it will be pretty much the only track they're known for, but that's no insult - It has a wonderful 80s disco-esque vibe what with the shimmering guitars and Pharrell plays his part excellently, but this doesn't sound like Daft Punk at all does it? Enter the robot voices and closing swirly synth riff and you just know who this is. It's a considerable departure yes, but it still has a clear air of 'them' around it. And more importantly, its just so BLOODY CATCHY. I seriously cannot believe anyone in this country didn't hum along to it at some point during the year.

 

Kiss FM did it's best, but it never really tired on me. Everywhere I was in 2013, this song was there, even when I was stubborn about it overshadowing Daft Punk's other work. It is absolutely the song I associate with memories from 2013 and therefore, I can't think of a more better song to be my top song of year...

Aaand, there we go. I can't imagine any of you that weren't in the Unknown Pleasures edition in which this was entered, so I would recommend you listen as its an incredibly infectious little song.

 

The song itself is an instrumental (I did say I loved them) that moves along in three different instrumental keys - all as ear-snaggingly catchy as each other. With the typically brilliant Swedish production, there is a quiet xylophone at the start followed by a flying keyboard and - yep that's right - an accordion (I'm surprised you all didn't pick up on the little hints). Just one listen is all it takes to win you over and there's even a video featuring Harry Potter cycling away from the Dementors on a bicycle accompanied with it. It somehow didn't even get my maximum score in UP, but I thank whoever sent this for bringing this wonderful tune into my life.

 

Why on earth have I put this obscure song at number 1? Well I guess, like Get Lucky, it's stayed with me everywhere this year, but not infused with culture like Get Lucky due to it being very unknown - I more associate with my personal life this year, I guess the theme of building and building into a melody represents my mind state and ambitions to aim higher and keep riding the cycle race. Enough philosophical mumbo jumbo. and have found myself constantly returning to it more than any other song, so I guess that's why it's my number 1, also obscure music has broke through my chart loving stance to become my generally preferred type of music (well, its not on the radio all the time is it?) so it feels only fitting to put something obscure as my number 1.

Okay, so this is why I love these countdowns - just listened to 'Open' and OH MY where has it been all my life year?! So so fine. Really surprising #1, but an absolute tune - it was in contention for my list, if I'd listened to it more this year (I always forget to move UP songs onto my main playlist), it probably would've made it. 'Get Lucky', though, was my only chart #1 not to make my 100. Oops. I do still like it, but that was a brief infatuation.

 

Good to see the CHVRCHES tracks high up - 'Gun' is my pick - along with NONONO, such a tune! And still so much love for NO CEREMONY /// and 'Gimme Sin' - the latter of which was a discovery for me when you sent it, so thank you!

I need to listen to Open, I loved The Fall late last year so if it comes recommended like this...

 

I do remember Sommarfagel being very interesting in UP, can't remember how many points I gave it but it always nice to see someone with an obscure #1, it gives you the feeling they love it absolutely enough to declare it their favourite song even if no-one else shares that view. And variety etc.

 

Clarity and Magnetic Eyes were always next to each other for a long while in my chart so seeing them together here looks very right, both absolutely stunning dance tunes.

I think this year my tastes have got a lot more obscure (blame Kiss FM etc.) so I think it summarises it well having a song that barely anyone knows at number 1, plus I have been returning it to a lot over the last year. Who wants to be predictable ay? :D

 

I really likes The Fall as well, though Open sounds a LOT more intimate, trust me :lol: If you liked The Fall I'm sure you'll like Open.

Ooh, I love an obscure #1! and that was a very nice song from what I can recall! Get Lucky, Pumpin Blood and Clarity are my top ten highlights!
