On air on sale didn't work as radios didn't get it. Song would be released and then fan buys would get them high but then started to fall and radio saw that as the track ending and would give up on it.

But that makes them OA/OS to all intents and purposes, no, since they were available to buy from the point when they started getting serious promotion/airplay/video-play? No sales for those songs were "lost" in the way they would definitely have been for 'Roar' and 'La La La'.

There is actually a significant difference between OA/OS singles and post-album singles, at least in the minds of radio. I would argue that it is far easier to get radio to support a post-album single than an OA/OS pre-album single in a lot of cases.

Would I please be able to have sales for James Arthur's album and also YNTSLY?

I'll sort this & other requests out tomorrow, once C+ arrives. :)

But what examples are there of that? Again, it seems to me most of the examples people usually come up with for why OA/OS doesn't work are either songs that flopped worldwide, or songs by artists who usually flop in the UK - therefore, there's no sign whatsoever that they would've done better had the release been held back for weeks.

Well, that gets into a whole other debate of whether radio actually has that big an impact in the age of YouTube - I personally think radio tends to follow what the charts/sales throw up as the biggest songs, rather than radio actually triggering people to send songs to the top of the charts. Most of the songs in the top 10 of the year managed to surge to the top of the chart before radio caught up and started playing them in any major way, while, on the occasions when radio does play a song before it's become a big hit (which, again, is pretty rare these days), such as Olly Murs' latest, it doesn't necessarily make the song storm up the chart at all. I won't go into that again though

Thank you (:

Vidcapper, do you have the chart run for Cher's I Hope You Find It with total sales and the total sales of Closer To The Truth as well? Thanks!

I've read your stance on this before and I'm afraid I don't agree, but it's a boring debate and if you don't want to go into it, neither will I.

It depends on the radio station. Radio 2 is the biggest radio station in the country, but has little effect on the singles chart. However, Capital FM and Radio 1 have a very large effect on the charts, and the evidence shows that they are the main deciders of what will be a big hit in the UK (there are exceptions obviously, but this is the usual case).

The top 75 run was

Cher - I Hope You Find It - (4 Weeks) 26/10/2013 -{25}-36-35-65

Exactly Counting Stars & radio 1 is a good example they would never have played this band had other stations/other countries not jumped on its obv hit potential so as it surged up the chart radio 1 had no choice but to play it!

Thank you!

Any sales info this week for What About Us and Disco Love?

Yes, any updates on these two as well as Living For The Weekend?

Thanks in advance!

54 - 52 - 310,700 - Rihanna - Diamonds - 982,500 - 13/10/12 - 8

I like the song but it's a bit of a weird million seller. It does feel as though if it was sang by someone else, it might have only just managed a third of those sales.

LOL at Bingo Players being as low as 69 for a no1 hit (that was obv held back too long). I remember waiting an age to buy it at the start of last yr and then its sales turned out to be rather underwhelming. Other no1s that are low down the chart will sell well this yr too like The Monster & Happy.

Special mention has to go to songs like Hey Porsche, Ho Hey & Radioactive for not getting to the top 5 but still selling bucketloads!

The only #1's to miss the top 100 entirely were "Let's Get Ready To Rhumble" and "Under Control" then  (the latter not having many charting weeks, though)
vid can u give me estimate sales for What About Now and year end position?
Thanks for compiling, I think it would be better as a separate topic now

Think its on the first page (its extended to a top 75 of the yr)!!

I did speculate when Bingo Players hit #1 that it would probably end up at the bottom of the EOY too 75 and I got shot down and criticised for speaking too soon! Hmm...
