Is It Any Wonder?

Average Score : 8.60

Highest Voter : 10 (Chez Walrus, Aphrodite)

Lowest Voter : 4 (Richie)

Unfortunately, "Is It Any Wonder?" didn't manage to be in the Top 5 but it's the favourite track of "Under The Iron Sea" for many members. Apart from Richie, it had many 9 points and two 10's!!! "Is It Any Wonder?" was the second single from their second album "Under The Iron Sea". It was also the first Keane single to be sold in Mexico and other Latin American countries. It charted at No.3 in Uk Music Charts and it's one of their best selling singles!! It charted at No.3 in Spain and No.7 in the Netherlands. It was also a Top 20 hit in Italy and Ireland. It was successful in Belgium too (as always..). A European hit!!! It was the soundtrack of the 2006 film Ice Age: The Meltdown and in the video games Madden NFL 07 and Dance Dance Revolution Universe 2. But the most important was the fact that it was nominated for the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal for the 2007 Grammy Awards!!!! But it was totally robbed by "My Humps"..Oh my gosh..The definition of the most unfair winning in Grammy history..

I think that many would wonder about the meaning of the song but it's about the Iraq War!!! It's probably the one song on the record that most expresses our dismay and confusion about what it means to be a British citizen, in terms of what our society's contributing to the world at large," Rice-Oxley explains. "It's very hard to make sense of why Britain feels it needs to sign up with George Bush's attacks on Iraq and the whole Afghanistan thing. It feels like there's a whole lot of trouble brewing up over Iran, and you just don't know where it's going to end. On a personal level, for people of our age, it's really unsettling..

The song is not an attempt at some sort of wide-sweeping political statement, it's just about just seeing things from a personal level - what are you supposed to believe, what is actually right? How can you work out what is the truth, and what is the right thing to do? And there's so many different opinions, and you're supposed to have an opinion on what your country is doing, and yet it is so hard to even begin to gather all the facts. It's really distressing thing for people of our generation I think, the feeling of not being able to do anything about that. I guess that was something we were all feeling very acutely in the song. And I think the sounds of the song sum that up in a very tangible way. Imagine that these meaningful lyrics lost the Grammy Award for a song which it was written for humps..Okkk

First three lines : I, I always thought that I knew

I'd always have the right to

Be living in the kingdom of the good and true

Deservedly one of the biggest Keane hits ever! Shame it missed the top 10. I tend to believe that the Under The Iron Sea era is easily a fan favourite but quite underappreciated by the general public/casual Keane fan.

What do you mean that it missed Top 10..? In Argentina? Because it charted at No.3 in U.k and it's one of their most successful singles there....I think that the general public connected certainly with their debut album.

Bend and Break

Average Score : 8.75

Highest Voter : 11 (Richie)

Lowest Voter : 6 (Aphrodite)

The most unpredictable thing about this rate wasn't the fact that "Bend and Break" is at No.5..But it was the fact that Richie gave 11 points to it..:) But it also took 10 points from three voters (Jester, Insomnio and O Mie d'Lorde) !!!By the way, it was so close to No.4 and No.3!! What a nice melody!! It was released as the fifth and last single from their debut album "Hopes and Fears". The song was released in specific European countries as Germany and Austria but not in U.k. It charted only in the Netherlands (#27). But their album "Hope & Fears" has sold more than 2.800.000 copies (in U.k) and it was ranked the 11th best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK!!! Worldwide, the album had sold over 5.8 million copies as of November 2009..So, it was obvious that "Bend and Break wouldn't be a mega hit for them..Million people had already it from their album.. :smoke:

Last year, we listened a new remix of this song by Belgian DJ / producer Basto!! And i love this version too.

First three lines : When you, when you forget your name

When old faces all look the same

Meet me in the morning when you wake up

What I really meant was "shame it missed the Top 5" and I was talking about the rate, but I don't know why I posted Top 10 so my bad :D

Bend And Break was a nice 5th single off Hopes And Fears. I love the remix we recently got, it made the song click on me once again. Wouldn't have predicted it had reached so high in this rate, though.

Richie played an important role for that..:)

This Is The Last Time

Average Score : 8.80

Highest Voter : 11 (Chez Walrus)

Lowest Voter : 7 (Richie, Jester)

"This is the last time" managed to be at No.4 to this countdown!!! This is one of the most radio friendly songs in my country!!! Amazing song and Tom's vocals are superb!!! It was their 4th single from their debut album "Hope & Fears". It charted at No.18 hit in U.k although it was one of the most selling singles that year (2004). It charted at No.3 in the Netherlands and it was a biggest hit in Belgium too!! Rice-Oxley said about this song that it means regret, confusion and separating : You have a bond with someone but you don't want to stay with them forever, so you decide to go. But you're not saying "I hate you and I'm leaving"...you're trying to say "I think you're great but I've seen that there's something more perfect and magical out there for me and I need to find it. But I will always be your friend if you need me." (…) I guess the feeling of conflict within yourself and the difficulty of making that decision is what the song is really about. It's not sarcastic or anything but it is certainly confusing..

I think that all we had this kind of feelings in our lives..On both sides..But the "victim's side" is always painful because we don't want this to be the last time..Amazing meaning. Time Rice-Oxley is a little god!!!

First four lines : This is the last time

That I will say these words

I remember the first time

The first of many lies

Spiralling

Average Score : 8.80

Highest Voter : 11 (O Mie d'Lorde)

Lowest Voter : 4 (Richie)

"Spiralling" had the same average score with "This Is The Last Time". But the latter had only 2 10's when the former had 3 10's..I would never expected "Spiralling" to be so high to this countdown. But the majority of the voters gave many points to it. "Spiralling" was the first single from their 3rd studio album "Perfect Symmetry". It charted at No.23 in Uk. It also charted at No.22 in Ireland and No.12 in the Netherlands.

It sounds quite different than the rest of their singles. Their sound is more aggressive. The song was said to be inspired by wrestling legend Ric Flair who Tom Chaplin described as a personal hero for his try hard mentality in the ring. His trademark "woo" inspired the song. Tom Chaplin described the song as "a train of thought about human endeavour, built on an outrageous groove". The song went on to become the most broadcast song of the world during its first week of release, as well as the fastest-downloading song ever for Universal, reaching 500,000 downloads in less than a week.

The song won Best Track at the Q Awards in 2008!!!

First four lines : I'm waiting for my moment to come

I'm waiting for the movie to begin

I'm waiting for a revelation

I'm waiting for someone to count me in

Very well deserved top 3 position for Spiralling. I do remember back in the day it was released people in here were praising it. I even remember Keane haters like Aly (Silver Rocket) saying they deemed the song quite anthemic. And it certainly is.

This song reminds me too much of the Perfect Symmetry Tour, I went to see them live when they toured that album back in the day and this was certainly a top moment of the evening.

You were so lucky..I wish i had the chance.."Spiralling" is quite good and i used to listen it many times that period. But it's not the best song of the album. "Perfect Symmetry" is the highlight of that album for me.

Everybody's Changing

Average Score : 9.35

Highest Voter : 11 (Eyes, Jester, Aphrodite)

Lowest Voter : 6 (Richie)

Everybody's Changing had a great average score!!! I totally love this song because it always reminds me my first job. I used to listen to radio so many hours that period and radio stations overplayed this song..They used to play it every thirty minutes!!! :o The music has something very nostalgic and the lyrics are so meaningful..It was released as the second single from their debut studio album, "Hopes and Fears" in 2004! It reached at No.4 in U.k. It was very successful in Italy (#2) and Belgium. It was also a Top 10 hit in Denmark (#7) and France (#10).

The song is about trying to work out where you are in the world, while some of the people around you are going off and doing different things. Tim wrote it while we were really struggling to get anywhere as a band, and we were watching all our friends move away and get on with their lives, while we were stuck in Battle getting nowhere, and wondering if we were doing the right thing..And they did the right thing..Their career started with this song and i'm sure that everybody knows it (at least in Europe).

First Verse and Chorus : You say you wander your own land

But when I think about it

I don't see how you can

You're aching, you're breaking

And I can see the pain in your eyes

Says everybody's changing

And I don't know why

So little time

Try to understand that I'm

Trying to make a move just to stay in the game

I try to stay awake and remember my name

But everybody's changing

And I don't feel the same

Somewhere Only We Know

Average Score : 9.55

Highest Voter : 11 (Common Sense, Insomnio)

Lowest Voter : 4 (Richie)

"Somewhere Only We Know" is surely one of my favourite songs ever!!! I adore this song!!! I'm so happy that this is the No.1 of this countdown!! It's also their signature song and it's their best selling single!! It has sold more than 300.000 copies only in U.k!!! I know that many people would not impress with these sales but Keane certainly sold albums and not so much singles..

It was their first single from their debut album "Hope and Fears". It charted at No.3 in U.k!!! It was also a Top 10 hit in Belgium and Denmark.

Richard Hughes, Keane's drummer, offered the following explanation of the song on Chris Flynn's fansite:

"We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time...".

It's one of the most romantic songs ever and we have heard of it in many official trailers..The most notable was in "Lake House".

Lyrics : I walked across an empty land

I knew the pathway like the back of my hand

I felt the earth beneath my feet

Sat by the river and it made me complete

Oh simple thing where have you gone?

I'm getting old and I need something to rely on

So tell me when you're gonna let me in

I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree

I felt the branches of it looking at me

Is this the place we used to love?

Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh simple thing where have you gone?

I'm getting old and I need something to rely on

So tell me when you're gonna let me in

I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go

Talk about it somewhere only we know?

This could be the end of everything

So why don't we go

Somewhere only we know?

Somewhere only we know?

Oh simple thing where have you gone?

I'm getting old and I need something to rely on

So tell me when you're gonna let me in

I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute why don't we go

Talk about it somewhere only we know?

This could be the end of everything

So why don't we go?

So why don't we go?

Ah-ah-ah

Ah-ah-ah

This could be the end of everything

So why don't we go

Somewhere only we know?

Somewhere only we know?

Somewhere only we know?

No surprises there! Excellent top 3 of course.

Job well done, cheers for hosting this ^_^

Thank you for your appreciation.."Somewhere Only We Know" is a stunning song..It is the highlight of their discography. It would be crime, if it wasn't No.1..

Nice to see their cover of Lily Allen's song at No. 1!

I like Lily Allen but her cover was so boring. If there wasn't the advertisement on T.v, it would have worst total sales than "Hard Out Here".. Marketing usually makes miracles for minor things.. :smoke:
