June 3, 201411 yr Bono Defends U2 Offshore Tax Arrangements By Author | June 3, 2014 0 Comment LONDON – Bono in a British newspaper interview has defended U2’s financial arrangements, saying the band’s decision to keep a portion of its wealth offshore in the Dutch Antilles was in line with the Irish government’s tax philosophy. The Guardian asked the music star if it was hypocrisy for him to criticize the Irish government for its spending while U2 was avoiding taxes. “It is not an intellectually rigorous position unless you understand that at the heart of the Irish economy has always been the philosophy of tax competitiveness,” the paper quoted Bono as responding. “Tax competitiveness has taken our country out of poverty. People in the [tax department] accept that if you engage in that policy then some people are going to go out, and some people are coming in. It has been a successful policy.” He also criticized some people on the political left, saying: “On the cranky left that is very annoying, I can see that. But tax competitiveness is why Ireland has stayed afloat…So U2 is in total harmony with our government’s philosophy.” Asked if the tax arrangements have affected the band’s reputation, Bono said: “I think for many reasons people have taken a dislike to our band and to me. This is another one. I have worked as an activist for all my adult life, and I think overall that no one can doubt we have been pretty effective. You can criticize me for a lot of things, but probably not for my commitment of time and energy.” Concluded the singer: “Some of the people who criticize us in Ireland and America have a history that you can trace back to our opposition to Noraid [- a fund raising organization founded after the start of the conflict in Northern Ireland in 1969, which critics have called a fundraising ally of the IRA]. A lot of the others probably hate our music. And a lot of other people probably have a point.” topnewsstories.com

Bono and a group of six pals tucked into some of the house specialties at well known restaurant which sits just outside Galway city. The 'Beautiful Day' singer availed of the Sunday set 2 course lunch menu (€22.95) opting for the O'Grady's Seafood Chowder as a starter and freshly caught Atlantic cod for the main course. "He was staying traditional and sticking with the old favorites," Assistant manager Karolina Gajewfka said. "You can't go wrong with the chowder." Bono's party enjoyed the meal, posing for a photo with one of the chefs outside the bright blue restaurant before moving on. "They were lovely diners and would be delighted if Bono became a regular but it's a bit of a trek from Killiney to Barna," Gajewfka said. Edited June 9, 201411 yr by Jupiter9

Mrs Merkels face tells a story , she obviously  Bono http://i62.tinypic.com/2n24boh.jpg Nick Webb Published 15/06/2014 I love your early work: Bono waves to Angela Merkel and Herman Van Rompuy. Photo: Suzanne Plunkett/Reuters U2 frontman Bono may be set for another massive technology score, as wireless speaker maker Sonos takes off. Bono is a partner in US venture capital firm Elevation, which has backed Facebook, Yep and other tech groups. It has also invested in Sonos, which saw revenues double to $535m (€395m) last year. The San Francisco firm, founded in 2002, allows users to wirelessly stream music from dozens of online services including Pandora, Spotify and iTunes. Elevation invested in the company in 2012 as part of a funding round that raised $145m. Investors included private equity titan Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co and Redpoint Ventures. The company was blasted into public consciousness with a high-profile ad during the superbowl earlier this year. Elevation also invested in the US business magazine group Forbes. It was put up for sale last year, with Chinese conglomerate Fosun International widely seen as the front runner in a deal. It is thought that the media group could sell for around $250m – less than originally thought. Elevation paid $240m for a 45 per cent stake in the company back in 2005. Elevation partners have been extremely active in recent months, following a splurge of deals during the early days of the web 2.0 boom. Earlier this year, the venture capital outfit was part of a group that ploughed $17m into native advertising start-up Sharethrough. The other investors included Silver Creek, North Bridge and Floodgate Last month TPG Growth appointed Bono and The Edge to the board of iconic guitar maker Fender. irish Independent

June 26, 201410 yr Bono Calls Apple a ‘Religious Cult’ & ‘F***ing Annoyingly Quiet’ About Their Support For His RED Charity June 25, 2014 10:14 AM Bono had a bone to pick with Apple over their extremely low key support of his charity, (Red) so he decided to let the company know in the most public place imaginable. During a presentation at Cannes, Bono got onstage, sat next to Apple designer Jony Ive, and started to bash Apple’s choice to keep their support for (Red) on the down-low. Apple was one of earliest supporters of (Red), which looks to stop the spread of AIDS and HIV, launching a branded product program where tech fans could buy devices and give a little money to the charity. But, according to AdWeek, Bono told the crowd that Apple has always downplayed its involvement, something the U2 frontman says began with Steve Jobs refusing to put the nonprofit’s signature parentheses on any Apple products or in any Apple stores. Related: Bono & The Edge Are Writing Music for ‘Once’ Director’s New Project “One of the reasons it’s such a credit to have Jony Ive on the stage is because Apple is so f—ing annoyingly quiet about the fact they’ve raised $75 million,” Bono told the crowd. “Nobody knows!” Bono then reportedly pulled out an official (Red) iPad cover and removed the device to show the audience that the logo was inside the cover and therefore always obscured by the tablet. “Where’s the (Red) branding?” he questioned. “Nobody can see that. This is modesty run amok. This is the Apple way. They’re like a religious cult.” Bono made an urgent plea to the audience filled with heads of business agencies and brands that he was there to ask for help in fueling the research and distributing the medicines needed to protect HIV-positive parents from passing the virus along to their unborn children through brand partnerships. With their help, Bono said they could create an AIDS-free generation as early as 2015, but as of late the effort had been halted by sluggish fundraising. Related: 5 Directions U2 Could Go In For Their New Album “The idea that we might get close to an AIDS-free generation, and then not get there, and for what? Because the heat isn’t on the issue,” Bono told the crowd. “You’re about heat. You’re a sort of thermostat for the world.” U2 is currently working on a follow-up to their 2009 album, No Line on the Horizon, slated to be released before the end of this year. radio.com
