Bono and The Edge team up with 'Once' director on new film

The Dublin-born director of hit film 'Once' is working on a new film about music in Dublin during the 1980s, with U2's Bono and The Edge working on the score.

And John Carney has revealed that he plans to cast unknown actors and actresses in key roles for the project.

Mr Carney directed the Oscar-winning 2007 film 'Once', which starred 'The Frames' singer Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova.

He has also released a new film called 'Begin Again' featuring Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley, who stars as an aspiring singer/songwriter, which will be in Irish cinemas on July 11.

But in an interview about that film, he revealed he was also working on a project called 'Sling Street' with Bono and The Edge.

It has been set in Dublin during the harsh recession of the 1980s and focuses on 14-year-old Cosmo, who decides to form a band with schoolmates, after finding home life difficult.

When family trouble flares up, he decides to flee to London with his 15-year-old girlfriend, who dreams of being a model.

In an interview with film website comingsoon.net Mr Carney spoke about his plans to "mix it up" with the cast.

He said: "That's exactly what we're doing. We're mixing it up, but certainly the main people will be unknowns, and it will star some great actors we're looking at for other roles. But it will be a film full of new faces."

The production has been described as a semi-autobiographical tale inspired by the film-maker's love of music.

However, he has said it will be different to 'Once.'

"It's actually very different. It's all about kids, so it's very different in terms of... it's not a grown-up movie."

"It's kind of like an adventure musical in a weird way, but it's set in the '80s in a school with a bunch of kids and then there are some teachers and parents," he said.

Auditions were held for the film in May, where hundreds of hoepful youngsters turned up to try and scoop a part.

The open casting session was looking for teenagers to play the lead boy, girl and other supporting roles in the film.

Live Aid was 29 years ago? My god. Where has my life gone? I remember it like it was yesterday. I was on holiday in a caravan in Wales. I watched it on the tiniest tv ever

U2 Tour 2014: Bono Says They're 'Getting Older' To Move On With New Album; Recording And Band Touring To Continue On 2015 - 'Out Of Creative Juices'

U2 Tour 2014: In a report by Billboard recently, the band U2 confirmed that the band, who revolutionized rock with their hit songs "With Or Without You", "Ordinary Love" and "Beautiful Day", among others, will have to move their set release date of the new record and tour until 2015 for a few reasons.

"It seems to be taking longer for them to finish an album as they get older, but the great thing about U2 is that the whole of a record is always better than the sum of its parts," a source close to the project reportedly said. "That magic that the band always seems to capture ... they have yet to capture it."

In an interview with Hollywood reporter earlier this year, band members Larry Mullen and front man Bono hinted their work ethics when it cam on creating the new record they made and how the album wasn't yet ready.

The band is looking for more creative juices and time to work on the new album, which was one reason they extended their deadline until next year.

"We've always needed collaborators to challenge us," says drummer Larry Mullen. "We're slow learners. We need to be creative, on the cutting edge, challenged, and it's really hard going, it's relentless, and we're relentless, and we have a history of breaking engineers, producers. I mean, people come out of working with U2 and just go, 'I just don't know what's happened; it feels like a lifetime has passed by.' And that's just the way we work."

Bono then added: "The album won't be ready till it's ready. But right now, people are walking a little differently -- well, they're not walking, they're running as if to a finish line. There's a couple of songs that are part of the story we haven't quite finished. We know we have to spend a couple of years taking these songs around the world, so they'd better be good."
