August 31, 200619 yr Chartbeat from Billboard.com August 31, 2006, Fred Bronson TIMBERLAND: Justin Timberlake and Timbaland make a potent combination, as they have co-produced and co-written a No. 1 hit on The Billboard Hot 100. It's the second chart-topper for both. Just over six years ago, Timberlake had his first No. 1 when 'N Sync led the list with "It's Gonna Be Me." To find Timbaland's other No. 1 hit, one only has to go back in time four weeks, when "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland held sway. The 31-1 rise of "SexyBack" (Jive) gives Timberlake the third biggest jump to No. 1 in Hot 100 history. The only singles to make bigger leaps to first place are "A Moment Like This" by Kelly Clarkson (52 -1 in October 2003) and "SOS" by Rihanna (34-1 in May this year). "SexyBack" is the 14th song to advance to No. 1 in 2006. There were only eight chart-toppers in all of 2005. No year has had as many as 14 No. 1 songs since 2001, which closed with Nickelback securing the 14th chart-topper of that year with "How You Remind Me." "SexyBack" is the 11th No. 1 on the Jive label and the first since Chris Brown's "Run It!" reigned for five weeks in November-December 2005. Jive's run of No. 1s began the week of Nov. 3, 1984 with Billy Ocean's "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)." Ocean gave Jive its first three chart-toppers. The label's other No. 1 acts include Hi-Five, R. Kelly (on his own and in a duo with Celine Dion), Britney Spears, 'N Sync and Joe. Timberlake's first solo album away from 'N Sync did not yield any No. 1 singles. "Like I Love You" went to No. 11 in October 2002. "Cry Me a River" peaked at No. 3 in February 2003. "Rock Your Body" reached No. 5 in May 2003 and "Senorita" stopped at No. 27 in September 2003. "SexyBack" is also enjoying activity on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, where it enters at No. 67. It is Timberlake's fifth song to chart and is his highest-debuting title. That honor was jointly held by "Cry Me a River," "Rock Your Body" and "Still on the Brain," all of which opened at No. 75. WRECKERS' HOME RUN: For their first time at bat, the Wreckers have hit one out of the park. Michelle Branch and Jennifer Harp's debut single, "Leave the Pieces" (Maverick), moves 2-1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, making the Wreckers the first female duo to have a No. 1 hit with a debut single since the Davis Sisters topped the chart in October 1953 with "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know." The unrelated Davis sisters were Skeeter Davis (born Mary Penick), later famous for "End of the World," and Betty Jack Davis. The song was a posthumous No. 1 for Betty Jack, who was killed in an automobile accident on Aug. 2, 1953. Her real sister, Georgia, took her place in the duo. The Wreckers is the first duo to have a No. 1 hit with a debut single since Brooks & Dunn kicked off a successful career with the chart-topping "Brand New Man" in September 1991. KANE, YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT: The "Making the Band" TV series has produced three chart-worthy bands, and all three have debuted inside the top five of The Billboard 200 with their first albums. But third-season group Danity Kane is the only act of the three to enter the chart at No. 1. The quintet's self-titled CD opens in pole position, besting first-season boy band O-Town and second-season R&B outfit Da Band. O-Town's eponymous debut bowed at No. 5 in February 2001, while Bad Boy's Da Band entered at No. 2 in October 2003.
