Peter Hain, former Cabinet minister (including for the Middle East, briefly) thinks that the chances of a viable two state solution are shrinking as Israel continues to encroach on more and more land that would probably be part of Palestine, and that a single secular state is now the only workable solution to the conflict.

A single, secular state has been my preferred solution for a long time but I can't see either side accepting it. Therefore, it is probably not worth even trying to pursue that potential solution.
A single secular state would defeat the entire point of Israel. It's not happening.

That explains why it's not happening, but not why it shouldn't in principle.

Mightn't the same have once been said about Northern Ireland though?
