3DD Scores Deals on Robbie Williams Special

LONDON, September 6:

3DD Entertainment has finalized a deal of presales on Robbie Williams: A Close Encounter, featuring the singer’s live performance at Leeds Roundhay Park this weekend.

3DD, a distributor of music and live event programming, has finalised pre-sales deals for the show with stations including Network Ten (Australia & New Zealand), Viasat (Denmark, Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania), YLE (Finland), Premiere (Germany), M-Net (South Africa), SBS (The Netherlands), Melody TV (Middle East), Musika 24 (Israel) and Telecom Italia (Italy).

The film, shot in HD, is directed by Hamish Hamilton and produced by Lee Lodge for Done and Dusted.

“It’s fantastic that so many broadcasters want to be part of this unique event,†said Lara von Ahlefeldt, the director of music and development at 3DD. “Robbie entered the Guinness Book of Records by selling 1.6 million tickets to his 2006 world tour in just one day so it’s great that this worldwide simultaneous transmission gives all those Robbie fans that missed out a chance to see him perform.â€

Showman Robbie wows 90,000 fans

Leeds Today

A SHOWER of fireworks and 90,000 screaming fans greeted Robbie Williams as he took to the stage at Roundhay Park for the first of his two sell-out concerts last night.

The superstar, who was launched onto the stage through a hidden trapdoor, held back tears during his opening song, Radio, telling the crowds that he'd "come home".

Many had camped overnight at Roundhay Park to guarantee a good place and Robbie, who is performing another show in the park tonight, didn't disappoint.

From Radio, he launched into a string of crowd-stomping favourites, including Rock DJ, Millennium and Feel, before paying tribute to his former Take That bandmates with a version of one of their biggest hits, Back for Good.

Introducing the song, he told the crowds that he had been invited on the band's recent comeback tour, saying: "They asked me to do it and for a minute, it pulled on my heartstrings.

"But then I realised I'd sold three million tickets for my own tour. What can you do?"

Having heard that 11 schools in Leeds had to close because of the concert, as reported in Thursday's YEP, the cheeky star also told fans: "How great am I? That never happened when I was at school.

"Michael Jackson never came to Stoke-on-Trent."

Robbie's best friend, singer and TV personality Jonathan Wilkes, joined him on stage for a performance of Me and My Shadow, followed by impromptu versions of Lulu's Shout and the Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive.

Robbie also performed new single Rudebox, which has been panned by critics, and begged fans to go out and buy it.

However, the track received a mixed reaction from the audience, unlike the classic hits Kids, Angels and Let Me Entertain You, which saw Robbie descend onto the stage from a metal basket hanging from the ceiling.

Few incidents of trouble were reported from the concert but chaos ensued afterwards as fans tried to leave Roundhay Park.

Thousands had to queue for buses for several hours but many, including Kerry Smith, 27, from Horsforth, were still buzzing from seeing their hero in action.

Kerry, who watched the show from the Gold Circle, said: "Robbie was brilliant and I swear at one point I caught his eye – at least, that's what I'm going to tell people.

"Leeds probably won't see anything like this again, not for ages anyway.

"Buying a ticket was the best thing I've ever done."

'Fantastic he's here' – playing to excited 90,000

Yorkshire Post Today

Thousands of excited fans streamed into Roundhay Park, Leeds, to be entertained by Robbie Williams last night.

First there was Knebworth, then Live 8, then it was Leeds's turn to be wowed by one of the greatest showmen of his generation.

Groups of friends, mothers with daughters and couples basked in glorious sunshine. Some had hand-decorated their T-shirts with glitter spelling out their idol's name; others wore tight vest tops and pink stetson hats hoping to attract Robbie's attention.

Sam Butler, 23, from Yeadon, Leeds, who was wearing pink fluffy bunny ears, said: "I love Robbie. I am hoping he will spot me from the stage."

Surrounded by excitable females, Dave Marshall, 46, from Yeadon, said: "It's a beautiful setting.

"Hopefully it will kickstart more concerts here because we had a few back in the 1980s with the Rolling Stones and others and hopefully this concert will start it all again."

But not everyone was pleased to see the pop star as many local people had to suffer traffic chaos with roads closed and schools shut all day or finished early because of fears pupils would not be able to get home.

One dismayed woman, who did not wish to be named, watching as the thousands poured into the park shook her head, saying: "All this chaos and people just to see one person."

But 90,000 people who were lucky enough to get a ticket disagreed.

Debbie Healey, 42, of Beeston, Leeds said: "It's Robbie Williams. I'm sure they won't mind being out of school.

"It's just fantastic that he's here and it proves that Leeds needs a music arena."

It is more than eight years since Roundhay Park last staged a major event. In the 1980s and 1990s it played host to rock legends including Madonna, the Rolling Stones, U2, Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson.

In anticipation of the massive event dozens of die-hard fans even camped out overnight in the park to make sure of a place at the front of the crowd.

Emma Nettleton and Kath Pearson, both from nearby Harehills, arrived at 2pm on Thursday – an astonishing 30 hours or so before the pop superstar was due on stage. Miss Nettleton, 26, said: "It's a once in a lifetime chance, getting to see Robbie in your home city. We wanted to make the most of it. "

Clare Summersgill and Alissa Butterill, also from Harehills, took up their positions at 7pm.

Wrapped in a blanket and sitting on a plastic chair, Ms Summersgill, 34, said: "It's been pretty chilly – but it will all be worth it when we are right up at the front."

Most people arrived by shuttle buses which began leaving Leeds city centre at 2pm carrying thousands who had poured into the city through the bus and railway stations from far and wide.

Some Roundhay residents looked bemused by the crowds, while others gave friendly waves to the excited fans who cheered and sang in anticipation of seeing their idol.

Tourism experts predict last night's and tonight's sell-out concerts will give Leeds's economy a £10m boost.
