In the chart discussion thread, some people thought the album should be much higher this week due to the tv show and feel its midweek position is disappointing. Looking at it from that point view, it is probably correct, it should be higher.

Weak sales given that the documentary aired twice around the holiday period but it hasn't been strongly marketed in high street shops. I'm sure the record company and band accepted some time ago that there wouldn't be a hike in sales. I think they will now concentrate on the new album with a winter release date.

Adele's sales in the UK have been outstanding, which proves that there is a strong buying market for the right music. That said her promotional strategy has been perfect and she's had amazing radio backing.

Indeed Adeles sales are outstanding but like Take That's previous huge sales it wont last forever. The tv documentary should have boosted sales, but the new version seems to almost unknown to anyone outside the dedicated fans like ourselves.
The new version is almost like a forgotten release. It really didn't do much to boost their profile or attract extra sales. The release would have cost more to re-issue than it would have made.

I have a feeling Adele's next album won't have half the sales of 25, because I've seen lots and lots of negative reviews. Take That have had more albums that sold well than most of the artists out there. Each year, there's a "chosen one" - Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Adele, Taylor Swift and so on. For some reason, people buy into all the hype and buy their albums without caring too much whether they're actually good or not. I remember a time when Nelly Furtado or Jennifer Lopez or Marc Anthony were the 2nd coming, but they couldn't sustain all that hype. What the heck, I lived the fan-mania of RBD, Thalia and Natalia Oreiro :D When you compare these short-lived successes to the long-term phenomenon that is TT, their sales for III don't seem that bad anymore.

Streaming seems to be gaining more and more terrain and sales will continue to drop. There's always gonna be one or other artist who will sell hugely compared to the rest, but the majority of the artists will have to find new means of making money. Take That will never again benefit from the hype that surrounds Adele or Taylor at the moment, but we shouldn't expect them to. The older they get, both Adele and Taylor will lose fans, cause they won't be perceived as cool or relevant anymore. Someone else will replace them too - someone younger, of course, cause I don't see any middle-aged artist breaking the charts right now. Take That have been more than blessed to have been able to sell more than half a million records at their age, which is, without a doubt, due to the quality of their music.

PS: I think I've been misunderstood when I said that I want TT to produce "commercial" music. By no means did I imply that I'd want them to produce music like Justin Bieber's or 1D's or Miley's - Heaven forbid! I can't even call those outputs music. I want TT to produce good music that is heartfelt, represents them and connects with people, without worrying too much about originality. If a new sound comes to them naturally, fine, but I don't want them to force themselves to produce something they didn't do before just so they gain critical acclaim.

All very valid points there. Every couple of years there is indeed a flavour of the month, and the hype eventually dies down. Look At Lady Gaga for example, her Fame/Fame Monster era was explosively huge, but the hype died down. That said, she still has a great career. Adele has done phenomenally well, three huge selling albums, and its likely her fourth with a bad outcome will sell at least 1 million copies (UK Market). While some of the records she has broken, i feel wont be broken, someone will take her place and will be the new flavour of the month.

Take That have had continuous years of success in both eras of Take That. They are the only band from their era who started out and are still around, most of the others are not even remembered. They have achieved astonishing UK album sales since their reform and their concert sales are nothing short of hugely impressive. The continuation of the success they have achieved is a bonus. They have gave enough to the music industry to be remembered and remembered fondly.

Moving forward, i too would love a genuine commercial album from the heart, an album that comes natural and no way forced to them. Three and Progress could have been that way but i would be more inclined to believe they were chasing the prospect of attracting more fans while also trying to keep hold of the existing fan base.

I've often commented on my dislike of Progress but perhaps I haven't been entirely truthful as there are songs off that album that I like very, very much. The same applies to lll. The difference is I LOVED the overall sound and output of BW and it's a quality album through and through. The last two albums haven't had the overall quality of BW, or Circus for that matter.

I think Adele will have longevity over and above the likes of Gaga. Her sales are so enormous, even with a down turn they would still be vast. Another thing is she doesn't polarize the public in the way artists like Gaga do. Adele is a MOR artist with quite a conservative sound. Performers such as her tend to buck the trend and have longer careers than those who are more 'out there.' Part of TT's appeal is they also fit into the conservative end of the music market. If artists produce a classical pop sound their music doesn't date as much and stands the test of time. If you listen to songs like BFG, MLS and Patience they are still as fresh as they were when they were first released - a sign of quality music in my view.

In terms of the Greatest Hits album in 2017 I would love a double album with some of the B sides revamped and perhaps given an acoustic sound. It's a shame they haven't received the public airing they deserve, but I guess that goes for most artists who only have the opportunity to showcase a small selection of their work.

I don’t dislike progress but I would say it is the weakest album they have delivered. It also the most un Take That album out of all their releases. That said The Flood is among their best singles but it didn’t represent the rest of the album.

I fully agree on your point “The difference is I loved the overall sound and output of BW and it's a quality album through and through. The last two albums haven't had the overall quality of BW, or Circus for that matter” BW and The Circus has a very wholesome sound all round and had a level of quality throughout. Three and Progress fall down on those areas.

I think you're completely wrong about Adele, I've heard most people praising the album and also everyone speculated that this would do nowhere near as well as 21 because of the immense success/hype that had.

I'm impartial, it's a good album so I'm not speaking from an obsessed fan's point of view. Surely if she was the "chosen one" she would have been in 2011 as a lot of people may have said back then?

I honestly have no interest in Adele. I neither like her or dislike her. I just used her as an example of someone who becomes big all of a sudden thanks to the hype built by the media. She's been around for far too short to be able to reach a conclusion about her. I just expressed my doubts that she'll have the same longevity as TT once she reaches a certain age and once people realize that she's not versatile at all. From what I've heard all her songs sound pretty much the same and, aside from Million Years Ago, I haven't been able to make it through 30 seconds of any other song on her latest album. Maybe she'll prove me wrong with her next album, but, so far, for me, the hype is bigger than the quality when it comes to her.

Three climbs to number 58 this week, least its another few sales and also another official chart week to add to their existing tally.

I like Adele, dont love her, but im happy to see her do well, i have never bought an album from her. Adele is the type of artist that i would buy the odd single (someone like you) and a greatest hits cd. 21 was a surprise huge success, 19 did well but 21 just exploded and due to its success i think it helped add another million UK sales to her 19 album. I do remember my aunt buying 21 on its release and her saying its such a great album she loved it but its not the type of music id invest my money into an album for. Alot of her music is one style but she has a style that suits a wide audience who randomly buy albums which is a great position to be in.

I would hope Three can manage another chart week this week but it will most likely not happen. Every week adds sales in hope of eventually reaching double platinum.

Hey everyone, back in the UK again! Thanks for all your messages and a very happy new year to everyone!

Pleased to see III is still hanging around in the charts and picking up a few more thousand sales. 2016 could be a good year for TT. I, for one am excited to see where studio album #8 will take us! Hopefully back to an acoustic lead BW style!
