I personally rarely 'love' songs that win (in ~60 contests I participated in I only gave my 12 to TWO winners, not counting my 4 wins) but LOVE to cheer for the underdog in general (unless I'm at the top of the odds lolol) so if you are predicted to do super well odds are ( :basil: ) I won't like your song much or will try to find any excuse to not like it~

 

Yeah I'm pretty sure all these terrible odds given to me have all ruined my chances of going top 10. I'm prettt sure if it wasn't for these odds, I would've won this thing 3 times already :smoke:

It's all educated guesswork at the end of the day. The reason that UP is so hard to predict is because as Pavel said, the member base changes so you can't get an accurate feel of what people are into, and the songs tend to be more subtle growers, whereas the majority of BJSC entries are very instant and generally more mainstream which makes it easier to gauge how they'll perform.

 

Whoring out your potentials is another matter entirely for me, as that's pretty much giving a song an advantage when the rest of the field hasn't been revealed and it's something I always try and limit for my own entries.

 

It's something that I never do. I'm not saying I have a problem with people that do, and I'm always happy to give my honest opinion if people ask me but you're quite right, those songs that have had 10 eager nods of approval ahead of confirmations are going to be remembered when it comes to voting.

 

The main reason I don't do it though is because BJSC for me is an instinct and gut feeling sort of thing, I'd rather just go with my favourite song at the time of confirmation rather than a consensus of other people's favourites out of a few decent choices. I want something that I can FULLY get behind and not want to feel like I've let my favourite song out of my potentials slip away. It's always satisfying to do well with a song that you know nobody else has heard prior to the semis opening. And if I fail then at least I've done it with the song that I wanted to send the most so I have no regrets :lol:

And if we accept that odds don't directly affect the actual results (admittedly still arguably), you could simply just not come into the thread if you don't like the speculation!

Moreover, if odds are not allowed, saying what you think will do well or hyping songs is and it still kind of inadvertently makes you assess which songs are at the top and which are at the bottom.

I ignore all hype and vote for the ones I like in the order I like them. It's the only fair way, though it's fun to read odds and guesses.

 

Also, agree with comments about pre-contest advice - I'm more than happy to give an opinion on a song being entered, after all if you've already heard other songs they already have an advantage or disadvantage, so it doesn't matter that much, but having a pre-contest popularity contest of several songs seems to be a bit "I wanna win" rather than "Oh i love this one!". Just go with the one you love the most :wub:

I had been whoring my potentials until this edition of Buzzjack and it appears I actually picked an awesome Song :yahoo:

From a personal point of view I have to say that odds make virtually no difference to my liking of a song, nor does a song getting high odds make me more likely to listen to it. I listen to everything once, delete the shit, listen again and so on until i get to 10.

I think even people who say that the odds don't affect their decisions can't rule out that unconsciously it may still influence them. And I think odds can define the final results to some scale. And I'm not saying everything is based on the odds, I just imply that it's a factor.

 

That said, it's been a part of fun for so long, and indeed the only way to avoid these "hype" affections is to ban the talking before the final results at all. But won't that be too BORING? Yes, it will be - so I think everything should stay the same. It's a game based on a bit of a gambling after all. Different quality of mp3s, the videos, even the way the songs are ranked in the semis and the finals - everything affects the final table to some extent, but we can't make a 100% fair contest because nothing in this world is 100% fair.
