Two supposed contenders opening both semi-finals?! That seems strange.

I knew Israel would get lumped into second. :(

Lucky Romanian bitches~

(AGAIN)

Say what you will but that's a great slot for Portugal.

I would've swapped Romania with Greece tho.

Israel :(

Interesting that Armenia is opening semi 1, only Moldova in 2010 has qualified from that spot.

I was thinking that but then I thought it's after the ad break, people might miss it :( Imagine the shitstorm in Portugal if Suzy qualifies though

I really don't see why Suzy qualifying for the Final is such an utopic result for everyone. I've got it down as a certain qualifier. It's a catchy party track with a pretty face singing it. They're currently reworking the track and judging by our 2007 entry's upgrade, Emanuel knows exactly what to do on the Eurovision stage.

I'd be surprised if it DOESN'T qualify, which could be down to the juries really.

Israel :(

To be fair though, half the time that slot was taken up by Montenegro's latest 'experiment'. I'm sure Armenia will add a second song to that statistic.

If Armenia don't qualify I'll be absolutely astonished!

Israel will be getting another totally undeserved DNQ to join Rak Bishvilo and Ding Dong then :(

I think Israel will be fine, it's stronger than most other songs in that semi and there are only 5 DNQs there. Going between Malta and Norway looks a bit risky though.

I hope Malta will still qualify despite being chosen to go first, I think they will be fine!

I wonder if some sneaky work to try and make the favourite not qualify is going on here! I hope that Armenia doesn't get to the final - that'd be great.

Re Australia - the ebu needs to find a way to bend the rules to let them take part. Maybe if a country pays a HUGE amount of money they don't have to be a member and can just take part?

Not countries, but broadcasters are part of the EBU.

SBS, the Australian TV channel which broadcasts Eurovision down under already pays a fee to the EBU to be an associate member. Only full members can take part in the Eurovision Song Contest.

I take it SBS doesn't take part because it's outside the European Broadcasting Area, and also probably because the show would be on the air around 5 or 6am and that wouldn't justify the costs of sending an act to the contest considering viewership, even if high at that hour, is not enough.

Yeah, there'd not really be any point trying to get Australia on board. You may as well just start adding in anyone at that point anyway.

Maybe country was a bad choice of word to use ;p

Yep I agree that because they aren't in the broadcasting area is the reason why they can't take part and also something to do with not being in the council of Europe if I remember rightly? But what I was implying was that it'd be good if the ebu could bend the rules to allow countries to not have to be within this area/group or full member if they are willing to pay a big one off fee each year to take part. Not that it'll ever be allowed but just an idea around it.

I'm sure they could work out a way around the time zone - maybe only jury votes being counted for Australia or those cast from the the public at the semi-finals.

I guess but Australians do have a lot of European heritage/ancestry and are more culturally similar than say Morocco who have taken part or the other North African places allowed to participate.

That doesn't sound fair in any account. Why would Australia only use jury votes? Certainly if they went ahead with it they'd have to let their 5am viewers vote.

And votes cast from the public at the semis? The semis are broadcast at the same hour as the final so I really can't see your point there.

I rather have Australia as we have them now: enthusiasts. It shows you don't need to have a song in the contest to enjoy it. A few European countries should learn from them... *cof* Turkey *cof* Slovakia *cof* Czech Republic *cof* Luxembourg *cof*

The Mediterranean nations are allowed to participate because they are part of the European Broadcasting Area.
