Umi's Chart highlights:
  • The last album as old as "Frozen" to sell more than 200k in one week was Adele's "21", which sold 730k in the wake of the 2012 Grammys.
  • Skrillex logs his best week ever as his first full-length album, "Recess," debuts at No. 4 with 47,000. It's his first top 10 album, surpassing the No. 14 peak of the EP "Bangarang" in January 2012.
  • The Pretty Reckless also scores its biggest week yet, as its second album, "Going to Hell," bows at No. 5 with 35,000. The group, fronted by singer/actress Taylor Momsen, had previously gone as high as No. 65 with 2011's "Light Me Up," selling 9,000 in its first week.
  • Enrique Iglesias nabs only his third top 10 album with "Sex and Love" as it enters at No. 8 with 24,000. It follows his previous top 10s "Euphoria" (No. 10 in 2010) and "Escape" (No. 2 in 2001).
  • Overall album sales during this past chart week (ending March 23) totaled 4.7 million units, up 3 percent compared with the sum last week (4.6 million) and down 22 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (6.1 million).
  • Year-to-date album sales stand at 57.1 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this pointlast year (67.5 million).

I would be happy with that were I Kylie.

At least she can say she beat George

Honestly I think they just gave up on Kylie in America anyway. Has she had even one performance over there? They actually tried with Aphrodite but everything about the KMO era (in the UK and elsewhere) has been very "meh she won't do well anyway so we'll just try keep the old fans happy".

That, but to be honest I don't think Rocnation wanted to do what Parlo did for K during the Aphrodite era. That was a mess...she did get cool promo spots but GOMW wasn't the right single to open an album in the US. By that yardstick, "Into the blue", as mellow as it may sound sounds more suited for US audiences than Aphrodite which was a bit kitsch for mainstream US radio appeal.

As for KMO, I heard she's planning on spending summer in the US promoting so let's see what comes out of that. But again, they need to go with the right song. If a 45yo does Sexercise in ageist sexist America, it won't go down well. That'll be as bad as previous experiments such as RBW and "All I see".

In the UK, I don't know if Rocnation gave up or wanted to cater to her small fanbase. They've spent tons of money creating the album and video to say "lets just chuck it to the usual 30-50K gay fans". They're probably thinking of some other 'strategy' like a slow build up and a slow burn across 3-4 singles. You never know....time will tell. If the 2nd single is Sexercise, then it's a goner. Even her new found home of R2 will abandon her!

I think the best thing Kylie can do in the US is just really try and push 'Into The Blue' to adult contemporary radio, try and establish a similar relationship to the one she has with Radio 2 in the UK. The time for her and Pop radio has definitely passed, so trying to lift album sales a bit is the way to go in my opinion. And certainly adult radio should be more willing to play her than Pop have been since 2002...

Only problem with the "slow burn" thing in the UK is that, well, it's just not how radio does things over here. If you don't get a good start they're not gonna give you a chance to pick up the momentum, so I really do think if "slow build up" is their strategy, it won't go very well.

And on a very barely related note, it's amusing to note that Enrique has only had three top 10 albums, and two of them came at a time when he's going into decline!
