September 3, 200619 yr Chart Commentary from Gavin Ryan Source: ariacharts.com.au Well, Justin is debuting at No.1 in the UK, and has jumped from 31 to 1 in the U.S., but this week he falls to No.2 on the Australian charts. Taking his place is the former UK No.1 single (June 4th for 1 week) "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)" by Sandi Thom. She is the first Female artist from the UK to the top of the Australian charts since Jamelia did so with "Superstar" back in March 2004, almost 2 1/2 years ago. It's also the first time since Will Smith's "Switch" back in May 2005 that a song that didn't debut within the Top 10 has climbed to the No.1 positon. Sandi's 'Wish' debuted at No.15 6 weeks ago. Another feat that this song accomplishes is to be the first since Meat Loaf's 8 week No.1 single "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" from September 1993 to 10 or more words in it's title, Sandi has 12 for the record. And the longest No.1 title in Australia is the November 1943 song "(As Long As You're Not in Love With Anyone Else) Why Don't You Fall in Love With Me" by Dinah Shore which has 18 words in it's title. As for the words within the title, it's the first time at the top for 'Wish', 'Punk', 'Rocker' and 'Flowers', but we've had one 'Hair' there before, The Cowsills back in June 1969 with their rendition of the stage musical theme "Hair". By the way in case you thought it was a No.1 that i'd missed, Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" only made t to No.2 nationally back in July 1967, although it was No.1 in several states. The highest new entry to the charts comes in at No.12, and it's a former U.S. No.3 single from 19 year-old Cassie. "Me and U" is her first chart entry in Australia, and she has some serious supporters in her corner: namely industry legends Tommy Mottola (who counts among his discoveries Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez) and Sean "Diddy" Combs who signed Cassie to his Bad Boy roster. She was born and raised in New London, Connecticut, Cassie and her brother grew up with music. Her father plays the trumpet, mom is a pianist, and with their encouragement Cassie started singing. Her self-titled album is out September 9th Right behind her at No.13 is "Lonely" by Shannon Noll. It's the fourth single from his former No.1 album "Lift", and follows on from the previous three singles "Shine" (No.1, Oct 2005), "Left" (No.10, Dec 2005) and "Now I Run" (No.6, May 2006). This is his eighth since overall, all previous seven having reached the Top 10. Coming in at No.20 is OC cast member Jesse McCartney with his fourth Australian single "Right Where You Want Me". It's the title track of his second album, which is out September 16th, and follows up his three singles from last year, "Beautiful Soul" (No.1, April 2005), "She's No You" (No.10, June 2005) and "Get Your Shine On" (No.34, Sept 2005). At No.23 is the first single from the forthcoming Best of for Missy Elliott entitled "Respect M.E." (Sept 9th) on which she is stradling a big black Stallion. That single is "We Run This", and is her first chart entry since the No.38 single "Teary Eyed" back in October 2005. Her last Top 10 was the No.7 single from July 2005, "Lose Control". The new album for Audioslave "Revelations" is out Monday, and from it the single "Original Fire" debuts at No.34. It's the third Top 40 Australia single for the boys, previous hitting No.34 with "Be Yourself" in May 2005, and No.35 in May 2003 with "Like a Stone". So all three songs have had a very similar chart peak. Finally the follow-up to the No.2 Australian single "Crazy" comes in at No.38 this week. "Smiley Faces" is the second single for Gnarls Barclay from their "St. Elsewhere" album, and the single was a recent No.10 single in the UK. Well, what's History if you can't re-write it. And this week it has been done by the second ever American to hit the top of the albums chart, Bob Dylan. Debuting at No.1 is Bob's new album "Modern Times" (possibly due to Father's Day here in Australia). This is his fourth No.1 album, the first was back in March 1968 for one week, "John Wesley Harding", and his next two weren't until the 1970's with "Desire" (Feb 1976, 3 weeks) and "Slow Train Coming" (Oct 1979, 2 weeks). It now brings Bob into second place behind Santana as the biggest gap between No.1 albums. Bob's gap (from 1979 to 2006) is 26 years, 11 months, and Santana's gap is 29 years, 1 month. It's also the first time that either the words 'Modern' and 'Times' has appeared on the top of the albums chart, and this album is the 150th No.1 album by a Male Solo American Artist. This week last year (funnily enough also Father's Day) was the week that "Tenology-The Best of" the Ten Tenors reached it's peak of No.8. Well this week they match that peak by debuting at No.8 with their latest effort, "Here's to the Heroes". Coming in at No.12 is "A Matter of Life and Death" by longtime chart veterans Iron Maiden. They first hit the Australian charts back in 1982 with the classic "The Number of the Beast" which reached No.8. This is their 15th album to make our charts, and their last effort was the September 2003 album "Dance of Death" which also debuted and peaked at No.12.
