Dr Blind Retro Chart - 6 years ago: 25 May 2008

Santogold before she became Santigold, and 6 years ago this week she was spending a fifth week at the top of my chart with "L.E.S. Artistes" - her debut single release which peaked at #27 on the UK singles chart a week earlier (and subsequently plummeted to 53 on 25th May 2008). The Top 10 was pretty commercial at the time with official Top 10 hits by Pendulum ("Propane Nightmares" #9 on the UK chart) and with Coldplay's "Violet Hill" (an instant Top 10 on the UK singles chart when it debuted and peaked at No. 8 in May 2008) becoming the years fastest instant hit on my chart with a debut position of No. 24. The track was peaking this week at 5 and became one of 3 Top 5 hits from Viva La Vida, with the title track peaking at No. 5 a few months later and "Life In Technicolor II" reaching as high as No. 3 in early 2009.

Vampire Weekend were the weeks longest chart stayers with debut hit "A-Punk" racking up an eighteenth week after peaking at No. 1 in March. Follow-up "Oxford Comma" would become their first UK Top 40 hit (peaking at 38 on 1 June 2008) and was up to 8 this week, and would eventually peak at No. 3 on my chart.

Dev Hynes was at #9 with his 2nd alias Lightspeed Champion, eventually securing a Top 10 hit from three different groups he has played with - the first Test Icicles ("Circle Square Triangle") in 2005 and later Blood Orange ("Chamakay" and "You're Not Good Enough" both in 2013). He would have to wait another four years to score his first number 1 single.

On its way to becoming #1 in June, Elbow's "One Day Like This" was the weeks biggest climber (up 50-29) and gave the group their 2nd chart topper of 2008 after "Grounds For Divorce" spent a fortnight in pole position back in March.

The biggest new entry on the chart this week was from Australian duo The Presets, who were due their biggest hit with "This Boys In Love" - Portishead were finally on their way to scoring their first T10 hit with "The Rip" after "Machine Gun" peaked at No. 20 in April and Mystery Jets and MGMT were both following-up earlier #1 hits in 2008 - namely "Young Love" (w/ Laura Marling) and "Time To Pretend" respectively.
