I think the main compotent to Iggy blowing up is the video for "Fancy", everyone I know (including those that detest hip-hop) love the video, because of the throwback to 'Clueless'.
Pretty muted début for Nicki, though I seem to remember her being released midweek so that's fair enough I suppose. Great to see 'Latch' finally top 30, as ever I'm hoping it can still climb further. And Shakira getting a third Hot 100 hit from this album is nice, she's matched She Wolf's total now. I hope 'Dare' can become a bigger hit than 'Empire' was (although I think 'Empire' has done really well on iTunes considering its abysmal airplay).
looks like "The Walker" is not going to be that summer hit predicted by billboard, "Red Lights" too, it's loosing sales/airplay
Great that 'Fancy' is #1 :D. Only the second Hot 100 #1 for a female rapper after Lauren Hill's 'Doo-Wop', according to Billboard .
It depends on your definition, really. If you consider either of Ke$ha's two solo #1s (Tik Tok and We R Who We R), a handful from Fergie (particularly London Bridge plus Boom Boom Pow and Imma Be with the Black Eyed Peas), and even Hollaback Girl, I don't see why some of those shouldn't count even if the artists in question also sing, especially since Lauryn Hill herself also sang on her #1!

(This was discussed a little more in Iggy's thread but I thought it was better suited for here)

To be honest I always felt Ke$ha was a rapper only if you had a very loose definition of what a rapper is. Fergie I never even thought of as one.
Chart Highlights:
  • Iggy Azalea joins the Beatles as the only acts to rank at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously with their first two Hot 100 hits as 'Fancy' hits #1 and 'Problem' rises to #2.
  • She's just the third woman to rank at Nos. 1 and 2 concurrently, following Mariah Carey (Sept. 10, 2005) and Ashanti (five weeks, 2002).
  • Azalea additionally becomes only the fourth solo female rapper ever to top the Hot 100, following Lauryn Hill, Lil' Kim and Shawnna (who featured on 'Stand Up' by Ludacris).
  • 'Fancy' is the first single by a female solo artist pairing to hit #1 since 'S&M' by Rihanna and Britney did so in 2011. Before that, the last one was 'The Boy Is Mine' by Brandy and Monica.
  • As 'Not a Bad Thing' hits #1 on Pop radio, Justin Timberlake has overtaken Bruno Mars for the most No. 1s by a solo male (seven) in the chart's history.
  • Jason Derulo, at #7 with 'Talk Dirty' and #10 with 'Wiggle', has concurrent top 10s for the first time in his career.
  • Digital track sales this past week totaled 22.07 million downloads, up 5 percent compared with last week (20.94 million) and down 10 percent stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (24.49 million).
  • Year to date track sales are at 487.54 million, down 12 percent compared to the same total at this point last year (555.67 million).

This is one of the better weeks for chart highlights I've seen, so many rare things happened this week. All of the Iggy stuff is pretty unbelievable, particularly when you consider 'S&M' very loosely counts as a duet. When it comes to being the third woman to have #1 and #2 at the same time, I'm inclined to say Iggy is more of an Ashanti than a Mariah but it's still a pretty impressive record to have (although as ever I'm very iffy with counting features on stuff like this as it's basically just good timing).

The Justin thing is so random too. I'm sure Bruno will snatch that record back very soon.
