#416. Calvin Harris & Alesso feat. Hurts - Under Control

1 week at #1 in 2013 (#22 of 30 for '13)

I like the "da da da da da da da" beat for some reason. The production isn't Calvin's best, but it's passable. But he just has so many better songs; many of which I would've preferred to go #1 over this (namely "Feel So Close" and "Bounce".) Though, he will certainly have his fair share of appearances in this list! I really like the line "Cause freedom is a lonely road."

#415. Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away

1 week at #1 in 1999 (#24 of 35 for '99)

This song is pretty catchy, and I like the instrumental. But the chorus has always been a bit lacking to me. And it gets pretty repetitive and blah towards the end of the song and really goes nowhere. I'm not sure, does he want to fly away?

#414. Sam Smith - Stay With Me

1 week at #1 in 2014 (#12 of 16 for '14)

This does remind me of an Emeli Sandé song, now that I've seen that comment many times, but I'm not sure which song. I first think of "Free", actually. It's a very emotional song. All he wants is someone to love, but all he can find are the one night types. I like that it captures the utter loneliness and desperation. But what I don't like is the execution. I don't like the Sandé-esque instrumental and I don't like the background choir-esque vocals in the chorus. The latter completely ruins the song for me. Otherwise, I'd like this song a lot more.

#413. Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls

4 weeks at #1 in 2007 (#13 of 17 for '07)

This song is about Sean being young, naive and foolish in love. Ignoring everyone that told him it wouldn't work, and then it turns out they were right. And this makes Sean feel suicidal. Which is a bit.. much. The suicidal parts feel a bit out of place. It adds a certain dark nature to the song, but I feel it doesn't quite work. I absolutely detested this song in 2007. It's grown on me a bit since then, but only to the point where I find it average. Why does every line need to end with the final bit repeated in auto-tune? The "Stand By Me" sample doesn't bother me that much, though.

#412. will.i.am feat. Eva Simons - This Is Love

1 week at #1 in 2012 (#29 of 36 for '12)

This is a will.i.am song? Well no, it's actually a Swedish House Mafia song! :P Their production is the only thing that makes this song tolerable, though. Eva's screeching is annoying. The lyrics are pretty bad like any will.i.am song. Instead of wanting to say "oh my gosh" for someone he likes, he now wants to exclaim "hell yeah!" Except the verses are all about the love of partying and not an actual person.

#411. McFly - Baby's Coming Back / Transylvania

1 week at #1 in 2007 (#12 of 17 for '07)

The song that infamously dropped 1-20. Surely one of the worst selling #1's of all time. This song is about thinking you're over someone until they walk back into your life. That "handgun" lyric is stupid. I find this pretty "meh" and forgettable. "Transylvania" is ok. I think this was the last double A-side to go #1.

#410. Michael Jackson - You Are Not Alone

2 weeks at #1 in 1995 (#13 of 17 for '95)

This is a conflicting song for me. I really like this lyrically. About isolation and abandonment. But I find this just so utterly dull. And it's overly long, which makes the dullness drag on quite a bit by the end.

#409. Yolanda Be Cool vs DCup - We No Speak Americano

1 week at #1 in 2010 (#23 of 34 for '10)

Well this was amusing for a few weeks and the video is pretty funny. But it got annoying so quickly. There really isn't a lot to this song. It's basically just a couple of brass sounds and a couple of Italian phrases on loop (with a bit of a piano in between). I don't get a lot of enjoyment out of this one anymore.

#408. The Vengaboys - We're Going To Ibiza

1 week at #1 in 1999 (#23 of 35 for '99)

"Woah, we're going to eat pizza!" :P Yeah, I'm never going to be able to un-hear that again. I don't find this one as fun as "We Like To Party" or their other #1. It's a bit forgettable. The production is very Ace Of Base-y (specifically "All That She Wants"). The "woah" bits do make a good hook, though.

#407. Hear'Say - Pure And Simple

3 weeks at #1 in 2001 (#21 of 30 for '01)

"Never ever have I ever felt so low.." wait, too early for that song. ;) Hear'Say were, of course, from the first series of the UK version of Popstars. This was the first song to go #1 that was related to a reality TV talent show, I believe. This song is the definition of average to me. There's not much I can hate about it, but there's nothing interesting about it to make me love it either. Just about any group at the time could sing this. And of course there's a key change. Just outside the top 400 seems right.

Yeah... this is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. It's awful, but I find it fun for some reason. The "sha la la la la"'s get to me! Cool video (a certain someone's appearance aside). Lol Mr Blobby though.

#405. Ed Sheeran - Sing

1 week at #1 in 2014 (#11 of 16 for '14)

My 22nd birthday #1 (and the song used as the cut off point for this list.) I've tried to make myself like this song ever since it came out. It was something different from Ed, and it's something catchy and upbeat. But it just never really grew on me in any major way. And I'm still not really sure whether I like this or not. I find the chorus a bit weak. I don't like the falsettos. But it is nice to hear him rap again.

#404. Take That - Everything Changes

2 weeks at #1 in 1994 (#9 of 15 for '94)

Yeah I don't like '94 that much. I find this very middle-of-the-road and therefore very boring. It sounds like an S/A/W leftover from a few years prior. It's not bad, though. I can't remember why I ranked it this high lol.

#402. Afroman - Because I Got High

3 weeks at #1 in 2001 (#20 of 30 for '01)

Well.. lol. It's amusing the first few times, but I'm pretty bored of this now. The song lists off the 876541 things Afroman intended on doing in his life, but didn't. Why? well; because he got high. And he reminds us of that several times. Much of the lyrics are.. questionable to say the least.

#401. Hanson - MMMBop

3 weeks at #1 in 1997 (#16 of 24 for '97)

So just missing out on the top 400 is Hanson. It's my fifth birthday #1. It's certainly catchy, no denying that, but it's just not strong enough to be any higher than this. The whole song is basically one long chorus with not much change. Their voices are so jumbled in the verses that I can't even make out most of the lyrics. I'm not sure if that's the point or what.

Top 400! :D

So, looking at my list, I can say I genuinely like every song left. Yay! I really liked when it crossed over here in early 2010 for some reason. I still don't mind it, but there's really not much to this song, it doesn't go anywhere, and the chorus is very repetitive. I prefer the version without Ludacris, I find his rap disturbs the flow of the song.

#399. Gabrielle Aplin - The Power Of Love

1 week at #1 in 2012 (#28 of 36 for '12)

I can't listen to this without being taken back to Christmastime 2012 (even after its random late success in Australia). It's one of those songs I always associate with a specific time period of my life. Nothing noteworthy happened to me in late 2012, but it takes me back to that time regardless. The original Frankie Goes To Hollywood version is very epic, and I think this piano ballad cover of it captures that atmosphere well. It borders on being dull, though, and I can only handle it in small doses.
