#106. Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe

4 weeks at #1 in 2012 (#7 of 36 for '12)

The best word I can use to describe this song is cute. Probably the cutest #1 of my lifetime. She was probably a bit old (I think she was 26 or 27) to release a song like this, but I don't really care. So she meets this boy, and is all hung up over him. She introduces herself to him by saying "Hey, I just met you, And this is crazy, But here's my number, So call me, maybe?" That line is full of teenage awkwardness. Which makes it so realistic. It's never easy to talk to someone you like; let alone make the first move. That line displays the over-thinking about every single word you say. To the point where it becomes an awkward jumbled mess. Like adding in extra words and phrases because you don't want to be seen as being too this or too that. Like adding "maybe" at the end so as not to sound too forward. It really makes you sympathize with Carly. The song brings back bubblegum pop. It's insanely catchy. I love the strings in the production. I love the video just for the ending alone.

#105. Dizzee Rascal & Armand Van Helden - Bonkers

This is a pretty strange song, but that's why I like it. I love the heavy noisy production on this, especially the drop.

#104. Olive - You're Not Alone

One of the many cases of a song going #1 from a dance remix. I love the production on this remix. It's very euphoric and haunting.

#103. Freddie Mercury - Living On My Own (1993 Remix)

2 weeks at #1 in 1993 (#3 of 15 for '93)

Posthumous releases almost always feel awkward to me. There's just something about the artist not being able to give permission to release their recordings that just doesn't sit right with me. It often feels like they're just cashing in on their death. However, this one is a really great song, and it's just a remix of a single that was released in the mid 80's anyway. This song has a really catchy melody and I really like the production on the remix.

#102. Usher - Burn

2 weeks at #1 in 2004 (#6 of 29 for '04)

This is like the ultimate R&B ballad. Usher was absolutely enormous over here during the Confessions era. His songs were all over the radio. "Burn" was originally intended to be the lead single, but US radio stations preferred "Yeah", so they were forced to switch them around. I've always felt this song sounded pretty similar to his previous hit "U Got It Bad". "Burn" has a very strong melody, though. So the first verse is Usher breaking up with this girl; ending with the line "you should let it burn". In this context, "let it burn" meaning that when the end of a relationship is inevitable, it's best to just end it, rather than prolonging it to avoid going through the hurt of a break-up. Because prolonging it just makes things worse, and you wind up hurting the other person more. Usher uses the pronoun "you" a lot in this song. It's like this whole song is a piece of advice to whoever's listening to it. But then the second verse and the bridge is Usher trying to move on after the break-up and he's struggling to do so. "I'm still burnin' till you return" says it all.

#101. S Club 7 - Don't Stop Movin'

2 weeks at #1 in 2001 (#4 of 30 for '01)

Probably my favourite S Club song. This is just so infectious and energetic. It's disco inspired and samples "Billie Jean." I don't know who's who in this group, but it's nice to hear one of the males do lead vocals. Wikipedia tells me it's Bradley McIntosh. Jo O'Meara does the lead female vocals once again. I love the "Right here on the dance floor is where you gotta let it go" pre-chorus.

#100. Kylie Minogue - Slow

1 week at #1 in 2003 (#6 of 22 for '03)

So kicking off the top 100 is a song from one of my all time favourite artists. This was the lead single from her 9th studio album, Body Language, which follows the mega successful Fever album. This went #1 on fan base buys alone, and plummeted out of the charts shortly afterwards; becoming one of the worst selling #1's. It's hard to decide whether the Fever era or her debut album era were her commercial peak. But either way, Fever was huge for her, and following up an era like that is tough. The Fever singles were pure pop (with dance influences.) She could've kept going in that direction with her next album. Afterall, she didn't change things up with her second album (just offered more S/A/W campness with "Hand On Your Heart".) But with "Slow", she took a risk and went in a whole different direction. "Slow" is.. well.. slow, and pretty minimalistic. It's a sexy song and her soothing vocals sell the song. I think "Chocolate" does this kind of song better, but I love this one just the same. Body Language isn't my favourite Kylie album, but "Red Blooded Woman" would be in my top 10 singles of hers.

#99. Avicii vs Nicky Romero - I Could Be The One

1 week at #1 in 2013 (#2 of 30 for '13)

And 2013 is the first year to be down to just one song left. Partly because I was just disinterested with most music last year and doing my personal chart was basically a chore most weeks. This song features the uncredited vocals of the queen of music, miss Noonie Bao. Jokes aside, I do like her vocals on this. I love the production. I usually do love these loud noisy type drops. It's very choppy. But honestly what really sold the song for me was the music video. This was my favourite video of 2013. Hands down. It's funny, it's relateable, it's so true, and very inspiring if you ignore the ending. She's stuck in a rut, she hates her life, she decides one day to just say "f**k it", and just does whatever she wants without thinking twice. The lyrics are concise but effectively get the point across.

#98. The Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode

4 weeks at #1 in 1992 (#2 of 8 for '92)

Well now 1992 is down to just one song too. But that's not really fair because Shakespear's Sister's "Stay" gets cut off from this list, and that'd be like top 15. Possibly top 10. "Ebeneezer Goode" is another case of "WTF is this?" And that's exactly why I love it. The lyrics allude to drug use (and the fast paced production captures that theme), which makes sense. This song is like being on an acid trip. It sounds very Halloween-y with the menacing laughs and the creepy spoken word parts.

#97. Spice Girls - Spice Up Your Life

1 week at #1 in 1997 (#3 of 24 for '97)

I absolutely loved this song as a kid. It's beyond ridiculously catchy and full of hooks. Looking at it now, it's kind of a mess of a song. There's so much going on. There's references to various places in the world (including that awful "yellow man in Timbuktu" lyric), random Spanish lyrics, and a Japanese sounding "Hi Ci Ya; Hold tight." It's like they were trying to appeal to everyone. The pressure was obviously on for the lead single from their second album. I read that the release of this song was pushed back a week because their record company was so scared of "Candle In The Wind" blocking it from #1. Their first four singles all went to #1, which was a record at the time. They had become huge world wide. There was a film on the way. This really was an event single, and because of that, it really feels like there was a lot of effort put into it to make it something big. But almost to the point where they were trying way too hard. But whatever, like I said, it's really catchy, and it's hard to hate this.

#96. Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way

1 week at #1 in 1999 (#5 of 35 for '99)

One of the most well known boy band songs, surely. I think nostalgia is a big factor for me here. Catchy hooks like "tell me why"; "fire / desire"; "heartache / mistake" help too, though. And I like the key change. The song is pretty meaningless. I mean, it's called "I Want It That Way", but what exactly is "it" referring to? But whatever. It's just a brilliant pop song, and that's all that matters. This video is a perfect example of how imagine is a huge factor with boy bands, though, lol. This isn't my favourite BSB song; I definitely prefer "As Long As Your Love Me", "Quit Playing Games", "All I Have To Give", and possibly "Shape Of My Heart". But they had a pretty strong singles discography pre-2005. And I always preferred them over *NSYNC, who I find to be too manufactured and calculated for my liking (I only really like about 3-4 *NSYNC songs to be honest.)

#95. The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin' Beats

1 week at #1 in 1997 (#2 of 24 for '97)

So all four of the Chemical Brothers / Prodigy #1's make it into the top 100. Their productions were noticeably more aggressive than most other dance music of the 90's. This song especially. It just gets noisier and noisier as it goes. It's a pretty busy song with a lot going on. It even sounds like squealing pigs in some parts. The instrumental is the focus of the song as there's not much in the way of lyrics (it's basically just the same 8 word phrase repeated.) And it's an amazing instrumental.

#94. Lily Allen - Smile

2 weeks at #1 in 2006 (#4 of 24 for '06)

It's the ultimate bitchy anthem. But she's perfectly justified in being one. She was cheated on, she was treated like crap, the relationship ended, and now he's trying to come crawling back. And Lily is just laughing at the whole situation and finds joy in this guy's misery. It's an attitude that persists in most of her discography, and it's one of the reasons why I like her songs so much.

#93. Olly Murs feat. Rizzle Kicks - Heart Skips A Beat

1 week at #1 in 2011 (#3 of 30 for '11)

I love this instrumental so much. It's really catchy, especially the "so put another record on.." and "so come on, spin me around.." parts. Rizzle Kicks also make a nice addition (though they don't really do a lot on it), and don't detract from the song like a lot of rap features on pop songs. Probably my favourite Olly Murs song.

#92. All Saints - Black Coffee

1 week at #1 in 2000 (#11 of 42 for '00)

2000 has the most #1's in this top 100; but keeping in mind 2000 by far has the most #1's overall, so odds are in favour of this year dominating. Not to mention I love so many songs from this year anyway. All Saints teaming up with William Orbit worked the first time, so why not do it again? This song definitely has its similarities to "Pure Shores", and sort of picks up where that song leaves off. "Pure Shores" was about finding your paradise and "Black Coffee" is about being in that paradise. In this song's context, the paradise is being with her lover. This song is about how she loves all the little things about him. It's why the song is called "Black Coffee". It comes from the line "and pour a cup of black coffee out"; which is one of the simple everyday things she loves about him. The verses of are sung in a rap-like fashion. And so is the intro and outro, which usually catches me off guard (the "night swimming; beach walking; always silent; never talking.." part.) Which, again, is a list of little things she loves. Speaking of that outro, it's such a fake out lol. The song even fades out just before it starts. Like I said, this was produced by William Orbit. There's just something about his productions from this time period that I absolutely love. They were very atmospheric. He also produced one of my favourite albums of all time: Madonna's "Ray Of Light".

#91. The Wamdue Project - King Of My Castle

1 week at #1 in 1999 (#4 of 35 for '99)

Maybe a bit random to be this high. But I love it because it's just a quirky dance song. All the swoosh sounds, the whistles, the ticking beat, the part where it sounds like he's singing underwater, etc.

Block Rockin Beats, Ebeneezer Goode, King of My Castle, Black Coffee & Slow are all fab <3 (YAY for the Olive & Tori Amos appearances just outside the top 100 too)

edging closer to the end now, looking forward to the rest of this :o

#90. Britney Spears - Everytime

1 week at #1 in 2004 (#5 of 29 for '04)

Britney is one of those artists who I very much prefer their uptempos over their ballads. But "Everytime" is the one big exception. It's a bit odd to think that this was her last #1 for nearly a decade. I don't think she had ever done anything this stripped down before. It seems like a pretty risky single choice, and it's a stark contrast to the previous single "Toxic". This song has been rumoured to be an answer to Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River", which was about Justin and Britney's break-up. "Everytime" tells Britney's side of the story. But this song isn't pointing the finger back at Justin; in fact it's the exact opposite. Britney is admitting that the fall of the relationship was own her fault. And now she's asking for forgiveness. It's a very emotional song. The music box-like piano instrumental adds to that mood. I really like the way Britney sounds so broken and vulnerable on it.

#89. Evanescence feat. Paul McCoy - Bring Me To Life

4 weeks at #1 in 2003 (#5 of 22 for '03)

This is my eleventh birthday #1. Surely one of the most unlikely #1's at the time. This is like the closest thing to a metal #1 since Iron Maiden in 1991 (unless I'm missing something obvious). And I wouldn't even classify this as metal. Maybe nu metal like Linkin Park. But anyway, unlike that annoying "Bring Your Daughter..", this one is pleasant on the ears. Well except for the few screamo parts. But I can ignore that. That said, Paul McCoy's "wake me up / can't wake up / save me" parts make the chorus catchier. But even without him, Amy Lee's shrill vocals still make the song what it is (and Evanescence's music in general.) Coupled with the heavy guitars, this song has always felt so dark and haunting. This song can have several meanings and interpretations (Amy has said there are multiple meanings behind this song.) It looks to be about being liberated, in some way, and anyone can interpret that into their own lives, I guess.
