October 5, 201410 yr I prefer your #2 to your #1 but both good songs in their own right. Don't care much for Frozen or Bad Romance however. On the whole though, great job! Been following this countdown right from the off & enjoyed your presentation & commentary. Excellent stuff!
October 12, 201410 yr Author I'm going to add in the last 14 #1's ("Ghost" through "All About That Bass"). It just feels incomplete without them. If I ever update this list again, it won't be for a very long time. My opinions tend to change over time, so I'd probably wind up re-doing this entire list. I'm already feeling like a few these are too high or too low. But I'm not going to change anything other than inserting 14 new entries. So "The Man" is no longer my least favourite #1 of 2014! The honour goes to... New rank / Old rank 598 / 584. Cliff Richard - The Millennium Prayer [1999] 597 / 583. Will Young & Gareth Gates - The Long And Winding Road [2002] 596 / 582. Joe McElderry - The Climb [2009] #568. MAGIC! - Rude 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#30 of 30 for '14) PIh2xe4jnpk To be fair, I've never been the biggest fan of reggae. But this production is just so irritating on the ears. It tries to fuse reggae with modern day pop sounds. But I find that combination just doesn't work here. At all. Granted there are some songs I love due to their addictive obnoxiousness (Showtek's "Booyah" is one that comes to mind). But "Rude" is just plain annoying with nothing redeeming about it. But of course, it's not just this production that's the annoying about it, there's also this chorus ("marry that girl... marry that girl... marry that girl")... just marry her already. This guy is trying to come off as this rebel bad boy by ignoring his girlfriend's father's refusal to let them get married. He declares they're going to run off and marry anyway, so ha! But the problem is that I just don't find him rebellious at all. More whiny than anything. Especially that phrase "why you gotta be so rude." And the whole thing feels very one sided. I just find it hard to sympathize, I guess. Edited October 13, 201410 yr by n4yr

I have to just laugh at the "I can speak in Japanese; Kawaii, kawaii, kawaii" line though. will.i.am seems to make it his mission to create the worst song possible. From "Check It Out" to "T.H.E." to "Scream & Shout" to "#thatPOWER" to "Feelin' Myself" to this. But fair play to him for continuing to churn out high charting songs. This is annoyingly catchy in some parts so it's not as low as it could be. Wikipedia says that Cody Wise was born in 1995, and I'm surprised by that because I thought he looks and sounds younger. This song is pretty repetitive. The phrase "it's my birthday" appears 18 times. The production isn't that great either. And will.i.am says the words "care-uh" and "thi-ink" and "dri-ink" (among others) weirdly. Edited October 13, 201410 yr by n4yr

Sam Martin - Lovers On The Sun 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#26 of 30 for '14) BPiW0tkWfeg From one pointless #1 to another. This one isn't bad, it's just average. Just when it looked like David Guetta was going to change things up this year; he falls back to this. But he's had worse. The verses in "Lovers On The Sun" have this country western dramatic stand off style production, which I actually quite like. But then it just builds up to a "Wake Me Up"-lite breakdown (it is co-produced by Avicii by after all) and it's a big let-down and I've lost most of my interest. This chorus is pretty underwhelming too. The words "We're burning up; We might as well be lovers on the sun" just doesn't evoke much in me. It sounds like a cliche phrase despite it not being a phrase I've heard before. Edited October 13, 201410 yr by n4yr

Oliver Heldens & Becky Hill - Gecko (Overdrive) 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#23 of 30 for '14) kcZMCMI24gs Along with "I Wanna Feel", I've found this to be one of the underwhelming deep house hits of this year. I don't really know why though. It's weird because I love "Koala. And I also love "Afterglow", so it's not like I have anything against Becky Hill's voice or her voice appearing on a dance song. Indeed, I think her voice is fantastic and it's one reason to not dislike this. There's places in the production I like (namely that rolling part at the very beginning and the very end). But I guess there's just not enough going on with it and it doesn't really go anywhere. And I don't really like the production in the chorus for some reason. Random: looking at the lyrics just now, I thought it was "lips of passion"; instead it's "let's have passion". Edited October 13, 201410 yr by n4yr
October 12, 201410 yr Author New rank / Old rank 437 / 428. Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You [2009] 436 / 427. Blue - Too Close [2001] 435 / 426. Psy - Gangnam Style [2012] #434. Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj - Bang Bang 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#22 of 30 for '14) 0HDdjwpPM3Y My opinion of Jessie J has certainly changed over these past few years. I loved "Do It Like A Dude" for being so WTF and "Price Tag" was a fine idea in 2011. And I still really like "Domino". I enjoyed her debut album for the most part, even though it was all over the place. It kept things interesting (though I had no idea what artist she was trying to be.) Though I didn't care for her screeching and her over singing (I really dislike when artists don't know how to use their voices properly and Jessie J is a major offender of that) but I appreciated it for the messages. Though it all seems rather contrived in hindsight. Her second album was pretty disposable but I still liked it. "Sexy Lady" and "Wild" are jams and I don't even care. But it's hard to like songs by an artist that is so dislikeable personality-wise. Either way, her songs are very hit or miss. This is more of the latter. It's not as bad as "LaserLight" or "It's My Party", but still. Interestingly, Nicki Minaj is another artist with an unlikeable personality that makes songs that I've liked. And she's also pretty hit or miss. As far as Ariana goes; well I'm not really a fan. She just annoys me for some reason. I don't know who's bright idea it was to throw these three into a song together. But fair play to Jessie using them to secure another hit. A collaboration of them isn't really something I'd be hyped about. It sounds like a mess on paper. But it isn't that messy, and that isn't my problem with it. I find the production a bit underwhelming. And I find the song just disinteresting in general. Jessie and Ariana are practically interchangeable. And it is screechy in parts. I think "bang bang" is supposed to signify sex. And I find it just sounds awkward with the way its worded in the lyrics. It sounds like gun shots. Edited October 13, 201410 yr by n4yr

John Newman - Blame 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#18 of 30 for '14) 6ACl8s_tBzE So probably the song that's newest to me in this list; due to it being an OA/OS #1 just a few weeks ago. I haven't heard this song enough times to properly judge it yet and I really don't know what to think of it yet. So I just put it somewhere in the the 5/10 section. "Summer" was instant for me (though I'm kind of tired of it now and I recognize its flaws), but this definitely wasn't. The drop and breakdown is very Calvin by-the-numbers and the production in general isn't that original for him. John Newman doesn't add much that I haven't heard from him already. 18 Months was a very solid album and I loved every single off of it (even "Drinking From The Bottle"). "Feel So Close" was my top song of 2011. Like every song he produced in 2012 dominated my personal chart that year. Calvin has definitely been one of my favourite artists as of late. So maybe my expectations are too high. Or maybe I'm just waiting for that one song that recaptures how I felt 2 years ago. I don't know. Now that I think about it, "Blame" wouldn't sound out of place on 18 Months. And I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I need more time to digest this one. I'll post the other half tomorrow. Which consists of 4 of my favourite songs of the year. Edited October 13, 201410 yr by n4yr

Iggy Azalea - Problem 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#17 of 30 for '14) iS1g8G_njx8 I said in the "Bang Bang" entry that I haven't been overly impressed with Ariana and I'm really at a loss as to why she's even a thing. Her voice aside, she just seems so average to me and I find her rather plastic without any star quality or personality in her music. Do not get the all the internet hype. Granted I only know a few of her songs, but still. "The Way" is just Mariah Carey-oke and "Break Free" defines facelessness. That said, "Problem" is like the 2014 version of "We Can't Stop". Can't stand the artist, but it's really hard for me to resist liking the song. It's why they rank pretty close together. Both songs are jams. "Problem" jumps on the saxophone loop breakdown trend of late. But it's incorporated well. The part where the guy is doing the breathy "one less problem" in the chorus might be my favourite part of the song; oddly. The pre-chorus is catchy. Iggy's part is nice but I tend forget she's in this song. But this song is an example of Ariana trying to show off all the vocal tricks she can do (mostly in the pre-chorus) and it's unnecessary and distracting to an extent. That's probably a weird criticism, but it's actually one of the reasons why I don't like Mariah Carey that much. Edited October 13, 201410 yr by n4yr

Cheryl feat. Tinie Tempah - Crazy Stupid Love 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#16 of 30 for '14) H8tS5UQmNQM Speaking of sax loop breakdowns. It sounds like a toy with a horn sound that's run on batteries, but those batteries are dying. It's a signature part of this song, and at first I found it weirdly addictive, but then it annoyed me and almost ruined the song for me. Now I'm not really sure what to think of it, but I'd rather them not be there at all. I'd possibly rank "Crazy Stupid Love" ahead of "Promise This" at least if that was the case; but instead it's Cheryl's weakest #1. And maybe her weakest single overall. I like the clapping beat in the verses though. It sort of reminds me of that Lumidee song and "Pon De Replay". The chorus and the "la la la la la la la love"'s are catchy and it's a danceable song. And Tinie's rap makes me laugh ("My tongue wagging when you wiggle", "She had my D; Now she dickmatised", etc.) Edited October 13, 201410 yr by n4yr

Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass 2 weeks so far at #1 in 2014 (#15 of 30 for '14) 7PCkvCPvDXk This song amuses me for some reason. I don't care about "skinny shaming" stuff since I don't take this song seriously in the first place. Though I think Meghan actually does take this song seriously and is trying to convey a message with it. I have no problem with inspiring self esteem boosts to her fans, but really this song is just too novelty to be an inspirational anthem. Especially when you have lyrics like this. "And all the right junk in all the right places", "'Cause every inch of you is perfect; From the bottom to the top", declaring that she's "bringing booty back", and of course "Boys like a little more booty to hold at night". That last one is pretty cringe though, I will admit. But all in all, it's just a fun song to me (though I'll probably get sick of it soon.) "I'm all about that bass; bout that bass, no treble" is a comparison to sheet music where the bass clef is fat and the treble clef is skinny. It's an interesting line. I find the video amusing too. I like the old doo-wop sound of the song; it's something different. But the chorus is really repetitive and there's not even a bridge which makes it even more repetitive. It's also a really catchy song (as silly as the "oh yeah yeah yeah yeah" is) and it's also a very uplifting song. The latter is what I love the most about it. It's about ignoring what everyone else tells him what he "should" do and he's just following his heart and making his own path in life. And he has a very positive outlook on the whole thing. It's simple but sometimes I love songs for their simplicity.

Paloma Faith - Changing 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#5 of 30 for '14) oAeotgCHL3E 3 new entries in the top 100! I can't get enough of this song at the moment so its ranking might be a bit skewed by that. I didn't really like this or "Nobody To Love" at first. I guess because drum n bass doesn't have a lot of variety to it and Sigma didn't seem vastly different from Rudimental. But both songs grew on me in a major way. The production in "Changing" is stellar. It feels very big and theatrical. Right from the haunting chants at the very beginning. The verses are a bit lowkey (which lets Paloma really shine) and it all explodes in the drum n bass chorus. And with violins throughout. I tend to like violins in songs like this (it's also partly why I love Chase & Status' "Blind Faith".) And then that chorus climaxes with the "go-oh-oh-oh-oh" chant which feels sort of anthemic. Oh and Paloma does a flawless job on this.
October 13, 201410 yr Yay for you hating rude. Let alone my least favourite 1 this year, it's my least favourite song this year :puke2: Also great to see changing make the top 100 and all about that bass (which I'm listening to now) doing quite well
October 13, 201410 yr Yay! Love that there's more of this! Agree with a lot of your list though 'Gecko', 'Lovers On The Sun' and 'It's My Birthday' would be a lot higher for me! Glad to see 'Ghost', 'Changing' and 'Prayer In C' all in the Top 100!

Ella Henderson - Ghost 2 weeks at #1 in 2014 (#3 of 30 for '14) tA8AfQaUnXM When Ryan Tedder produces songs for others, he tend to utilise the same tricks for the most part. There's the big anthemic explosive chorus. There's usually a heavy use of percussion. Usually notable piano. "Ghost" follows a pretty similar formula to those songs; such as: "Bleeding Love" (as well as Leona's "Take A Bow" and "Happy"), "Halo", "Battlefield", "Already Gone", "Strip Me", "I Was Here", "Rumour Has It", "Not Over You", "So Good", "XO", "Wings" (Birdy), OneRepublic's own "Good Life", "Something I Need" and "Love Runs Out"... and those are just the ones I remember (or I'm familiar with.) But it's a winning formula no matter how many times he's done it. He knows what he's doing. "Ghost" is a bit different because it has this whole tribal thing going on in the production with the backing vocals (as well as the heavy percussion I mentioned earlier.) And I love this production. "Love Runs Out" uses this tribal thing too (new trend maybe?) What also makes "Ghost" great is that Ella's voice is spectacular. I love when she sings that "I had to go through hell to prove I'm not insane.." line. She's proof that winning X Factor can be overrated and waiting 2 years has been good for her. This song is about someone (or something) overpowering her and she's trying to break free from it. I think it's about an abusive relationship that Ella's character was in. She didn't see what was going on for a while but her friends and family did. When she finally accepted the truth she "had to go through hell to prove she wasn't insane". And her going to the river to pray is her moment of desperation for this nightmare to finally end. This guy and/or what he's done to her is still haunting and hurting her and she's not capable of moving on yet. I'm not sure what makes the river so significant. But maybe I'm just overthinking that part. The video shows a different story but I won't get into that. I really like the line "Had to meet the devil just to know his name", even though I'm not really sure what she means by that. Edited October 14, 201410 yr by n4yr

There's just something about this guitar riff. I can't get enough of it. Robin's production is in the same vein as "Waves", which might seem a bit uncreative, but I love it just the same. Much like "Waves", it's pretty atmospheric. The drums add to that. It's a bit relaxing in a way. But it's actually not relaxing at all because the entire production is a complete stark contrast to the lyrical content. Warm production mixed with lyrics that are cold as ice. The narrator is utterly angry and frustrated. It's especially shown in her vocals which are so strained and hostile. She's seeing all the tragedies that are going on in the world and it's making her, as well as the innocent victims from said tragedies, lose faith in God for allowing these things to happen. Constantly saying "Don't think I/they could forgive you" at the end of every stanza. Even going as far as to say "Don't think you can forgive you"; implying that even God won't forgive himself. It's such a cold lyric. This is definitely an interesting song. I think "you didn't send me no letter" is her way of saying that God won't answer her prayers. Structurally, this song is more like a poem; and there really is no chorus. 44. Cheryl (Cole) - Call My Name [2012] 43. Eminem feat. Dido - Stan [2000] 42. Nelly feat.
