Several remakes do improve the original. The original Hills is actually quite dull and even thou there are too many survivors in the sequel it still beats the original every way. The Grudge remake is better in some ways also...while the original has the violence, the pg-13 rated American remake does have more atmospehere. Dawn of the Dead is a bit harder one. Both versions are very good IMO but because of different things. I like the social commentary from the original but then the remake is better for tons of good straight horror action. And with Ringu there is no competition, the original is such a borefest. But most of the time the original is better, for example, The Fog remake from last year was quite abyssmal even thou the original isn't all that great neither.

I have to say I dont agree with really any of that at all (especially your take on "Ringu", a borefest??? Are you actually watching the same film I did...? I dont think you really understand the Japanese film-making style to be honest. The remake is just typical glossy Hollywood rubbish horror for teenagers, with almost zero tension and practically all the more freaky supernatural elements taken out.), apart from The Fog, which I downloaded and switched off about half-way through.... The "Dawn of the Dead" remake starts off pretty well, but then it descends into MTV-territory. And no one is gonna tell me that the idea of the 'running zombies' wasn't ripped off of "28 Days Later"....

And, by the way, Argento only produced and wrote "Demons", it was Lamberto Bava who actually directed it... "Stage Fright" isn't an Argento film either, it was written and directed by Michele Soavi (who was himself an Argento prodigy for sure, but still....). I know that we all like to think of Argento as the one-man Italian Horror Machine, such is his influence, but the guy can't do ALL the horror films Italy ever made....

Apparently, the third of the "Three Mothers" films is in production....

In the meantime, here's a few more Italian horror maestros for you to check out.....

Lamberto Bava, Michele Soavi, Lucio Fulci, Umberto Lenzi, Ruggero Deodato, Antonio Margheriti (aka 'Anthony Dawson'), Antonio Bido, Pupi Avati, Mario Bava....

Some of my favourite, more obscure Italian Giallo films.....

What Have You Done To Solange, The Leech Conducts the Dance, Cat in the Brain, Curse of the Scorpions Tail, Torso, Hatchet for a Honeymoon, Don't Torture a Duckling, The Cat's Victims, Bloodstained Shadow, Bay of Blood, Blood and Black Lace, Mask of Satan, Black Sabbath, House on the Edge of the Park, Ghosthouse, House of Clocks, Five Dolls for an August Moon, Lisa and the Devil, House of the Laughing Windows, Dellamorte Delamore

also there is a 'nice' picture book  you might like to buy when your shoping on the brandspanking new waterstones site

its called The Dark Side Video Nasties/Video Nasties 2 book by Allan Bryce.

Strike Up the Banned: A pictorial guide to movies that bite

inc:

rare original video sleeves in full

complete cast and credits

every film reviewed at length

I have both of these books, plus the ones they did on the Italian Horrors, and the book on Lucio Fulci as well... A guy called Alan Jones has done a pretty fantastic book on the films of Dario Argento - "Profondo Argento", or if you prefer something more academic - "Broken Mirrors, Broken Minds" my Maitland McDonagh, which helped me out no end when I was writing my Film Studies dissertation on Argento (although this is very hard to get now cos it's out of print...)

"Dawn of the Dead" is an astounding film as well, both really allegorical and despite all the blood and gore on offer, I feel there is a pretty intense psychological aspect to them as well...

Despite the gore? the blood and guts is like the icing on the cake for me ^_^

Nothing can ever top "Dawn.." for me, unless they bring out some sort of amazingly brilliant film, but i doubt that will ever happen now they use all this SGI c**p. -_-

its better than the original.....the original was c**p imo

remake was utter $h!te, the original is good, not brilliant though, very much overrated imo.

i was disappointed that it wasn't a real massacre and that there wasn't actually that much gore.

yeah i neally bought that book not so long ago. however dont think i had enough cash in my bank by that point. got another book not so long ago with loads of horror covers in, small black about an A5 hardback book. have to find where it is to get the name

It's CGI.

I love The Shining, still scares me.

And I like any genre of horror, but mostly psychological. :)

Scream for me

Followed closely by Halloween, Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and House Of Wax

My fave horror film is scream 1 i watched it wen i were 12 and it were the first film i watched and i love it also like the bone collector with angelina jolie itz a real mind twist

There are tons of other horror films out there along with those listed.

A lot of the old black and white films were more frightening and indeed the silent film "Nosferatu" stands out.

"The Fly" is another good horror film.

How about Rosemary's Baby? A very tense, disturbing film leading to a positively shocking conclusion. This was groundbreaking in 1968 and directly led to films like The Exorcist and The Omen. It doesn't terrify or startle me, but it still really creeps me out to this day...

Original or remake?

That's a good point. I was thinking about the Jeff Goldblum remake.

Vincent Price was in the original, wasn't he?

That was good too, but I think the remake had the edge.

Saw Wolf Ridge today and it was definitely the best "scary movie" I have seen for a long time, so realistic and an everyday guy being sadistic killer instead of a man with a mask or pins sticking out of his face etc, my fave scary movie I reckon not to mention the victims were nice people
