Very happy with that! Finally looked like a team with purpose. Of course next weekend is a completely different kettle of fish but I'm at least (slightly) more confident if we can play like that... (or were Spurs just that bad )

Fair play, I thought United looked a different team today. First half you played really well, and Spurs caused all sorts of problems for themselves. Spurs just panicked and couldn't cope with the speed United played the ball. Saying that, I've watched Liverpool play very badly this season, but I think that Spurs performance topped the lot. They were second best to everything, and the midfield got completely overrun.

Next week is going to be huge. Liverpool will be everything Spurs weren't today, no two ways about it. Going to be a nail biter.

Gus Poyet sacked by Sunderland today and they are in talks with Dick Advocaat. Thoughts on this?

Sunderland have been sleepwalking towards relegation recently and Saturday's result was an absolute shocker so this comes as no surprise.

There seems to be a deeper problem at the club though - they have so much potential and things going for them but have never been more than mediocre since around 2000. Average players and managers abound. They have to pay more in wages I'd imagine to get players to move to the Northeast so they always seem weighed down with mercenaries, has-beens and panic-buys.

Seemed to be inevitable that Poyet was definitely going to go today.

Still think even with a new manager that Sunderland look sure-fire favourites to go down.

Definitely coming. I kinda feel sorry for him because he is a good manager, but I think he just lost his way a little bit. Be interesting to see who they get in now. I do wonder, if Burnley didn't get the 3 points on Saturday whether he would have been sacked.

Important win for Liverpool last night. Dug in and got a result at a difficult away ground. Massive game on Sunday and an interesting one too - especially if Man United have turned a corner with that Tottenham result. Hard to call.

I was actually kinda annoyed that Jack Rodwell equalised against Hull the other week as I thought Poyet should pretty much as soon as Sunderland went 1-0 down in that game. I really liked him as a manager but I've no idea what he's been playing at recently. In that game he had three defensive midfielders and no wide players on and wondered why the forward pair couldn't get a chance.

Dick Advocaat has a ton of experience, albeit not in the Premier League but then neither did Ronald Koeman or Michael Laudrup and they did (or are doing) ok. My main gripe is that he's a former Rangers manager so it's difficult for me to forgive him his former sins!

Agree was an excellent result, very tough ground. Big game on Sunday, although nothing will be decided as both teams have tricky fixtures in the run-in. There is no way I would back against Liverpool to get a result against Man Utd. Liverpool's poor first half, and Man Utd's excellent first half over the last match week, will just make the result all the more sweeter if we win :D

Not good for Villa, they really needed a result today given their matches next month (United, Spurs & City all away).

However it doesn't look like any of the teams below are going to do anything, Burnley still a have chance as they have some easier games after this horror run.

I sense another battering for Sunderland coming up...

Tim always struggles against someone that has proper tactical nous. There's only so much 'go play, and score' can actually get you.

Leicester down and out now. Definitely going to be tight until the end down there though, as no team can seemingly string a bit of form together.

Just got back from Upton Park. Poor quality game, with West Ham gradually getting on top and just about deserving the win. Sunderland were stubborn, but low on class. Johnson was abused all the time he was on the pitch.

Sunderland may just be saved by the bottom 3's awfulness. Safety by default.

I so hope Burnley put a good run together & stay up at their expense, they're the only team with a prayer of doing so.

Hugely pumped for this MASSIVE game though I still think even if we lose it's not a disaster as 2-5 will still be incredibly close so plenty of time to make amends...

Absolutely, nothing will be decided today, but if either team does win it's a massive psychological boost. Didn't help that everyone won yesterday as well.

I'm confident Liverpool won't lose, but I've seen another Liverpool-Man Utd games over the years to know that Man Utd can also be the spawniest team known to man :D

Fair play, can't argue with that defeat. Strange game yet again, and two quite poor teams. United well ahead for that first 30 minutes but Liverpool fought back 2nd half.

Gerrard was an absolute moron. I can understand he wanted to raise the tempo, but no need to stamp. Ridiculous. However saying that, it's hard to not blame the ref when Phil Jones could easily have been sent off, and Di Maria with the most blatant handball you will ever seen on the football pitch  Martin Atkinson couldn't wait to give the penalty either.

Top 4 not out of the question, but it makes it a lot harder now. Could realistically be 8 points behind with 8 games to go in 2 weeks time, think that might be too much if that's the case!

For the neutral, Gerrard's was the funniest red card for ages  So stupid and you can see exactly why he did it! That's gonna be the main memory from an entertaining match. Man United probably deserved to win by most accounts.

They do have the harder run-in though, so every chance of Liverpool overtaking them. They didn't turn up first half, but showed enough in the second to prove they can get results.

Gerrard plays with his heart too much. He's only ever been sent off against Man Utd & Everton for Liverpool.. says it all really

First half 30 mins was unacceptable, the team panicked. That's one down side of having a very young team, an experienced body in midfield might have been able to help us get some grip back. Very interested to see how the team responds against Arsenal.

Obviously delighted with the result, got a bit nervy towards the end (pre-penalty) which we probably should have avoided if we'd carried on in the same vein as the first half.

Arsenal/Liverpool is just as big a match yep, possibly more so for Liverpool now but as it stands 5 pts is still very little with 24 up for grabs!

Anybody think Jones should have been sent off for the foul on Henderson? Also, did Skrtel stamp on de Gea at the end!?

Hmmm tough one to call I could see why it could have been a red but I think it was more a cynical foul (to avoid an attack progression) rather than a genuine out-of-control lunge. Probably wouldn't have had too many arguments if he had seen red.

And yeah that was poor from Skrtel, definite stamp in the same bracket as Costa on Can, possibly some retrospective action for that?
