Hits Daily Double

From Hits Daily Double (June 24th 2014):

"Following a Monday release, we're getting early reads from retailers about next week’s debuts. Based on preliminary numbers, Ed Sheeran looks to sell 175-200k when all is said and done. Other newcomers to the chart will be G-Eazy (Blueprint/G-Eazy) who will debut in the 35-45k range while ATO’s Phish is set to come around 20-25k."

Hoping Lana can sell more consistently than most are predicting. Would be quite happy with 40k-60k in her second week.
That's actually a curiously slow start for Ed, he must be a lot more download-reliant than the contenders from last week! That's something I wouldn't have expected.

Are you kidding?

That's a GREAT start for him

It's definitely a great start but I mean, his pre-orders on iTunes have outstripped even Lana and Sam (with Lana in particular being well-known for her huge internet presence) so it's strange to think he's predicted to just about scrape past Lana after that.

Of course, his predictions could rise further, but I had predicted him for 230k or so.

I completely disagree with you.

175-200k is more than he could have EVER hoped for

I would normally have predicted a lower opening for him but I really don't think the pre-orders could be argued with. I don't know how he was doing on the likes of Amazon but he soundly beat Lana and Sam on iTunes and that's what I based my predictions on. 175-200k is very impressive, just lower than I'd anticipated.

I agree with Umi. His debut did well commercially and critically and he's kept his name in the public domain since then with other releases and touring. 'Sing' is becoming his biggest hit/seller and the multiple instant grat release strategy seems to have been successful in boosting pre-orders and creating a lot of hype. The new album has been getting good US reviews and he's likely to be doing some high-profile promo (or I hope his is).

175-200k is excellent but not unexpected or surprising to me. My prediction was highly optimistic (!) but I really think he has a lot of potential to sell albums due to his music's broad appeal.

The predictions might revise up anyway. Sam's did a fair bit from memory and he ended up selling just about around the highest prediction, and Ed seems similar in the "growing hype" department, plus there's potential promo and so on. I think he could clear 200k for sure.

Ed Sheeran Set for First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200

Billboard (June 25th 2014):

Ed Sheeran should easily score his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 next week with his new release "x." Industry sources suggest the set, which was released on June 23, could sell upwards of 200,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, June 29. Sheeran will have little competition for the top slot next week, as the next largest debut will likely be G-Eazy's "These Things Happen" with maybe 40,000 or so.

Such poor timing of the Sam Smith album release, after they seemed to get everything else so right :drama:
I am certain he'll get #1 at some point. He won't be let off American TV screens until he does.

G-Eazy Heading for No. 3 Debut on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

Billboard (June 27th 2014):

"Rapper G-Eazy is on course for a top 10 start on the Billboard 200 with "These Things Happen." Industry sources suggest the set, which was released on June 23, might sell around 45,000 by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, June 29.

Meanwhile, Sheeran is aiming for a big start of around 200,000 -- which would be the largest debut for a pop album this year, and the fourth-largest bow overall.

Other albums aiming for significant debuts on next week's chart include Mastodon's "One More 'Round the Sun" and Phish's "Fuego" -- both heading for around 25,000."
